Auflage 2004 erschienen war, ist es eher ungewöhnlich, dass ein solches Werk schon nach einem Jahr "völlig neu bearbeitet" vorliegt, insbesondere, wenn man daran denkt, dass E. Poetzsch ebenfalls 2005 schon die 4. völlig neu bearbeitete und erweiterte Auflage der "Einführung in die Grundlagen und Methoden" des "Information Retrieval" noch im "Verlag für Berlin Brandenburg GmbH Potsdam", herausgebracht hat. Ungewöhnlich ist es natürlich nicht für diese Thematik, sondern lediglich für den erforderlichen Arbeitsaufwand. Dadurch dass sich die beiden Bücher notwendiger- und sinnvollerweise ergänzen ist die Koinzidenz selbstverständlich auch kein Zufall. Beides sind keine herkömmlichen Lehrbücher, im Sinne einer theoretischen Durchdringung dessen, was Information Retrieval oder naturwissenschaftlich-technische Information (NTI) ist, sein sollte oder sein könnte. Das Buch ist vielmehr eine Basis für das selbständige Studium, bei dem man praktische und theoretische Erkenntnisse zum Thema: "Wie erhalte ich wo welche Informationen über die verschiedenen Gebiete der Naturwissenschaften und Technik" gewinnen bzw. sich erarbeiten kann. Die Zielgruppen sind somit naturwissenschaftlich Interessierte, die im praktischen Selbststudium ihr Wissen erweitern wollen, Studierende in den Übungen aller Dozentinnen und Dozenten, die solche Fächer lehren, und selbstverständlich auch die "professionals", die sich permanent auf dem neusten Wissensstand halten müssen, denn als Informationsspezialist des NTI-Bereichs kann man es sich nicht leisten neuste Informationsangebote oder Angebotsbedingungen nicht zu kennen, gleichgültig, ob sie aus den Bereichen Astronomie, Biologie, Chemie, Geowissenschaften, Landwirtschaft, Mathematik, Medizin, Pharmazie, Physik, Technik oder Umwelt kommen."
