Abstract
Der Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit stammt aus der Ökologie, und wird dort als Methode der Ressourcennutzung verstanden, bei der die Ressource nicht dauerhaft geschädigt wird. Was bedeutet Nachhaltigkeit jedoch in Bezug auf die Ressource Wissen? Wissensorganisation beinhaltet Modellierung, Strukturierung und Vernetzung von Wissen. Modellierung und Strukturierung sind Abstraktionsprozesse; dabei geht es um die Unterscheidung von Wichtigem und Unwichtigem. Das jedoch hängt stark von dem zugrunde liegenden Wertesystem ab, und ist somit gesellschaftlich und kulturell bestimmt. Informationstechnologie unterstützt Systeme und Artefakte der Wissensorganisation, die dem westlichen Wertesystem entsprechen. Die immer schnellere Verbreitung der Kommunikationstechnologie treibt den Prozess der Globalisierung voran, der längst nicht mehr aufhaltbar ist. Im Zuge der Globalisierung werden eurozentrische Methoden und Systeme der Wissensorganisation in alle Welt verbreitet. Die Gefahr der Nivellierung des kulturellen Terrains durch Globalisierung wird von Befürwortern und Gegnern der Globalisierung gleichermaßen anerkannt. Somit heißt Nachhaltigkeit von Wissen, bestehendes Wissen, zum Beispiel indigenes afrikanisches, in gleicher Weise zu konservieren und nicht durch die Entwicklung neuer Technologien zu reduzieren oder zu eliminieren. Diesem Prozess entgegenwirkend besagt Grundsatz 12b der Erd-Charta "Affirm the right of indigenous peoples to their spirituality, knowledge, lands, and resources and to their related practice of sustainable living".
