Abstract

This article evaluates the Library of Congress PA schedule as to how well it classifies classical literature. To do this, we take a two-pronged approach. After outlining the various types of material published in the area of classical literature, we examine PA to see how well it classifies these various types of material. Finally we examine the format of the PA schedule and discuss its usefulness to the cataloger. We arrive at the conclusion that most types of material are well treated by the schedule, except hat X ' s policy of separation of non-literary materials may be a hindrance to some libraries in their shelving of kanslations and commentaries. We also found that PA is an old schedule which is in desperate need of revision.
