Abstract: Die Entstehung von Bildarchiven und Bilddatenbanken sowohl im privatwirtschaftlich-kommerziellen als auch im öffentlich-rechtlichen Bereich wird einerseits durch ein gestiegenes Bedürfnis nach Visualisierung in unserer Gesellschaft und andererseits durch den neuen Stellenwert von Bildern als Quellen der Geschichte gefördert. Bilddatenbanken wie Getty-Images (www.gettyimages.com), Corbis (www.corbis.com) oder AGE Fotostock (www.agefotostock.com) offerieren weitläufiges Bildmaterial unterschiedlichster Sparten und entsprechend ihrer Nutzung zu unterschiedlichen Konditionen. Die Bildarchive Österreichs im öffentlichen Bereich werden ohne Frage durch das Bildarchiv Austria, die Bildplattform der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek (ÖNB), angeführt (www.bildarchiv.at). In ihm sind die vier größten historischen Bildarchive Österreichs (ÖNB, ORF, Verein für die Geschichte der Arbeiterbewegung = VAG, Österreichische Gesellschaft für Zeitgeschichte) in einem kooperativen Modell zusammengeführt und aufbauend auf Infrastruktur und Erfahrung der ÖNB zugänglich gemacht. Neben diesem in seiner Größe und Struktur anleitenden Projekt realisieren auch verschiedene universitäre Institutionen wie Bibliotheken, Archive und Institute ihre eigenen Ordnungs- und Digitalisierungsprojekte, um auch ihre bildlichen Quellen - bedingt durch das zunehmende wissenschaftliche Interesse und die steigende Nachfrage nach Illustrationen - dem interessierten Nutzer oder Kunden zur Verfügung zu stellen.
