Abstract

Examines the origins of the term 'decorative arts' and the history of its interpretation. Explores the theoretical and practical application of the decorative art category in art historical publications, in museums, and in library classification focusing on the North American experience. The treatment of the decorative arts current at the time of their construction. Suggests that these library classifications could play a positive role in any attempt at an enumerative definition of the decorative arts
