Abstract

The formal cooperative program in which the Library of Congress (LC) and 8 research libraries joined forces in 1988 to implement a nationwide program of coordinated cataloging is described within the historical context in which it was formulated. From the primary perspective of LC, the author focuses on what came to be called the National Coordinated Cataloging Program (NCCP) and how it evolved in the five years since its inception. NCCP is now at a crossroads, Its future is being considered and will likely be recast within the larger cooperative cataloging arena
