Abstract

Describes the British Library's project to convert its published catalogues of printed and manuscript maps to CD-ROM, by keyboarding, contracted out to an external agency; a project which shoul result in the publication of a CD-ROM in the second half of 1994. Considers the compromises with the quality of records which carrying out the retrospective conversion in this manner entails (e.g. inaccuracy in the descriptions are maintained, missing elements in the old records are not supplied) and argues that the practicalities of getting the work done required these compromises. Stresses that in preferring compromise to impossible perfection the British Library is not behaving irresponsibly
