Abstract

Examines the factors to be considered and procedures to be followed if a retrospective conversion project is to be successfully completed in accordance with its aims and with minimum adverse effect on the collection, its useability, staff and users. Discusses retrospective conversion versus restrospective cataloguing, the kinds of libraries that do it, and sets out the reasons for and against it. Describes the following elements of the planning process: determining needs and setting goals; establishing parameters for the project, establishing standards; identifying and analyzing options, developing a plan of action; implementing, monitoring and completing the project; and carefully documenting the entire project
