    Abstract
Describes a model of information seeking behaviour that views the information search process as proceeding through a series of cognitive states through which users progressively refine and reformulate their information problem. The model suggests that searches have several stages which evolve from vague and uncertain to clearer and directed and finally to focused and confident

    Abstract
To date, there has been little empirical research investigating the specific types of help-seeking situations that arise when people interact with information in new searching environments such as digital libraries. This article reports the results of a project focusing on the identification of different types of help-seeking situations, along with types of factors that precipitate them among searchers of two different digital libraries. Participants (N = 120) representing the general public in Milwaukee and New York City were selected for this study. Based on the analysis of multiple sources of data, the authors identify 15 types of help-seeking situations among this sample of novice digital library users. These situations are related to the searching activities involved in getting started, identifying relevant digital collections, browsing for information, constructing search statements, refining searches, monitoring searches, and evaluating results. Multiple factors that determine the occurrences of each type of help-seeking situation also are identified. The article concludes with a model that represents user, system, task, and interaction outcome as codeterminates in the formation of help-seeking situations, and presents the theoretical and practical implications of the study results.

    Abstract
Reports preliminary results from 2 studies, investigating the factors which underlie people's judgements of the relevance or usefulness of documents to particular information problems. The studies aimed to see whether factors other than topical relevance are significant in such decisions, to identify any such factors, and to relate such factors both to users' situations and goals, and to representation and retrieval strategies for information retrieval systems, which would take account of such factors. Identifies 6 facets of the judgement of documentation relevance or usefulness, only 2 of which seem directly related to topical relevance. These facets are interpreted in the framework of user goals and situation, and some example strategies for their use in information retrieval systems are presented

    Abstract
The subject of context has received a great deal of attention in the information retrieval (IR) literature over the past decade, primarily in studies of information seeking and IR interactions. Recently, attention to context in IR has expanded to address new problems in new environments. In this paper we outline five overlapping dimensions of context which we believe to be important constituent elements and we discuss how they are related to different issues in IR research. The papers in this special issue are summarized with respect to how they represent work that is being conducted within these dimensions of context. We conclude with future areas of research which are needed in order to fully understand the multidimensional nature of context in IR.
