    Abstract
    Eines der Schlüsselprobleme heutiger Kommunikations- und Informationstechnologien ist der Zugang zu großen Datenmengen. VR-basierte Retrievaloberflächen optimieren die Informationssuche durch Navigieren und Browsen in virtuellen Informationsräumen. Dieser Artukel beschreibt dasKonzept einer neuartigen VRML-basierten Retrievalschnittstelle für das Geoinformationssystem GEOLIS(GFZ). Der KnowledgeBrowser, eine visuelle 3D-Nutzerschnittstelle zur Unterstützung des textorientierte Information Retrieval, orientiert sich in erster Linie an den Erfordernissen des interaktiven Online-Retrieval in verteilten Netzen. Die Nutzerschnittstelle beinhaltet 2 Kernfunktionalitäten: Den Informationsprozessor zur automatischen Volltextanalyse und Klassifikation und den VRML-Konverter, der aus der Klassifikationsstruktur einen virtuellen Informationsraum in Form eines VRML-Skripts erzeugt. Die räumliche Retrievalschnittstelle ist palttformunabhängig und steht somit jedem Nutzer mit herkömmlicher WWW-Browser-Technologie zur Verfügung. Der hierarchisch aufgebaute Informationsraum bietet die Möglichkeit der interaktiven, inhaltsbezogenen Informationssuche insbesondere bei unscharfen Suchkriterien. Zielinformationen können direkt über Hyperlinks aus dem Informationsraum abgerufen werden
