    Abstract
    Der Begriff der Information dient in den Neurowissenschaften zum einen zur Charakterisierung der Bedeutung von Reizen, die von Menschen oder Tieren mit Hilfe ihres Gehirns verarbeitet, in ihrer Verhaltensrelevanz eingestuft und in sinnvolles Verhalten umgesetzt werden. Zum anderen werden formale, mathematische Methoden der Informationstheorie und der statistischen Schätztheorie eingesetzt, um quantitative Aussagen über die Signalverarbeitung im Nervensystem zu treffen. Insbesondere wird die Frage untersucht, ob und mittels welcher neurobiologischer - insbesondere elektrophysiologischer-Größen Nervenzellen sensorische Reize oder motorische Handlungen codieren.
