    Abstract
    Die Fähigkeiten des Bewusstseins liefern den Schlüssel für die umwälzenden Entwicklungen, die der Mensch auf der Leiter der Evolution zurückgelegt hat. Wie ist es zu erklären, dass unser Gehirn dem anderer Primaten so stark ähnelt und ihm doch so dramatisch überlegen ist? Warum stattet unser Hirn das Zentrum unseres Ichs mit so viel Autonomie und autobiographischem Vermögen aus? Donald zeigt die Vielschichtigkeit des Bewusstseins auf und erläutert, wie es sich auf der Grundlage der Kultur entwickeln konnte. Für den Autor ist der menschliche Geist ein hybrides Produkt, in dem Materie, nämlich unser Gehirn, mit einem unsichtbaren symbolischen Gewebe, nämlich der Kultur, verwoben ist, woraus ein weit verzweigtes kognitives Netzwerk entsteht. Allein dieser hybride Charakter unseres Geistes ermöglichte es der menschlichen Spezies, die Grenzen zu überschreiten, denen die übrigen Säugetiere unterworfen sind.
    Donald, Professor für Psychologie und für Kognitionswissenschaften, referiert die Erkenntnisse, die die Wissenschaft bisher über das menschliche Bewusstsein herausgefunden hat, und kommt zu dem Schluss: Nur das Bewusstsein hat den Menschen zur Kultur im Sinne gemeinsamer Gepflogenheiten, Regeln und Sprachsysteme geführt, diese wiederum hat die Bewusstseinsentwicklung des Menschen enorm beschleunigt und ihm einen evolutionären Vorsprung gesichert. Ein inhaltsreicher, gut belegter und diskussionswürdiger Beitrag, der sich in 1. Linie an Fachleute richtet.     Abstract
    Wenn von einer "umfassenden Aktualisierung" des 1999 im Original erschienenen populärwissenschaftlichen Taschenbuchs über die Funktionen und Arbeitsweisen des menschlichen Gehirns (BA 10/99), abgesehen einmal vom Kapitel über die Gefühle, kaum die Rede sein kann, so hat der Band der ehemaligen Wissenschaftsredakteurin der "SZ" nach wie vor Bestand als einer der wenigen "Gehirn-Titel", welcher die komplex-komplizierten neurobiologischen und -psychologischen Erkenntnisse der Hirnforschung inklusive der Möglichkeiten der neuen bildgebenden Verfahren bei der Erforschung von Entgleisungen des Gehirns (bei Depressionen, Schizophrenie, Parkinson) sowie der Entwicklungen auf den Feldern der KI und der Neuronalen Netze ohne Simplifizierungen in die Sprache von Otto Normalverbraucher verdolmetscht. Mit Glossar und Register. - Gern weiterhin empfohlen; der Vorläufer muss allerdings nicht unbedingt aus dem Bestand genommen werden.

    Abstract
    Unser Gedächtnis ist weniger zuverlässig als wir uns das wünschen, manchmal lässt es uns auch im Stich. Je älter wir werden, umso mehr. Dabei zeigt die neuste Forschung: Sich alles merken zu können, ist gar nicht so wichtig. Das Gedächtnis ist nämlich viel mehr als bloß ein Speicher für Erinnerungen. Es erweist sich als höchst aktives Zukunftsorgan. Seine radikal auf das Kommende ausgerichtete Funktionsweise bestimmt, was wir uns merken, wie wir lernen und wer wir sind.
