- Abstract
- The Europeana, the European digital library web-service, is being developed in the framework of the EU-funded network EDLnet. The demo version of this webservice was shown at an international conference at the German National Library in Frankfurt on 1 February 2008, the prototype will be launched in November 2008. In November 2007 the EDL Foundation was established to provide cross-domain multilingual access to Europe's cultural heritage. It will facilitate formal agreement across museums, archives, audio-visual archives and libraries on how to cooperate in the delivery and sustainability of a joint portal and will provide a legal framework for use by the EU for funding purposes and as a springboard for future governance. The European Commission is supporting the process towards the Europeana with a set of projects centering on The European Library. This webservice created by the European national libraries is seen as one of the major building blocks of the Europeana.

Tatsächlich kann sich das Informationsmanagement an Hochschulen über einen Mangel an Herausforderungen nicht beklagen: wie die Autorin einleitend darstellt, haben diese nämlich sowohl administrative als auch wissenschaftliche Informationen in sehr großer Menge zu verwalten. Dabei sind die für spezifische Informationen benötigten Datenquellen sowohl im administrativen als auch wissenschaftlichen Bereich oft voneinander isoliert und befinden sich in heterogenen Systemen - unerwünschte Redundanzen und Inkonsistenzen sind die Folge. Verbunden mit der verstärkten Nachfrage nach elektronisch vorliegenden Fachinformationen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb ist ein planmäßiges, strukturiertes und effizientes Umgehen mit Informationen notwendig. Ein Portal kann hier wertvolle Dienste leisten - doch was ist darunter eigentlich genau zu verstehen? Nach einer Auseinandersetzung mit der einschlägigen Literatur gelangt Guba zu folgender Arbeitsdefinition: "Ein Portal ist [...] ein virtueller Ort für die Bereitstellung und Distribution von (über verschiedene Anwendungen verteilte) Daten und Informationen und ermöglicht eine durchgängig IT-gestützte Prozessteuerung übertechnische Systemgrenzen hinweg [...] Ein universitäres Informations- und Kommunikationsportal hat also die Funktion, auf der einen Seite den Universitätsbetrieb und auf der anderen Seite die grundlegenden Bestandteile des Wissenschaftsprozesses, nämlich die Gewinnung, Speicherung, Publikation und Vermittlung von Informationen bzw. Wissen sowie die wissenschaftliche Kommunikation, zu unterstützen". Als weiteres wesentliches Merkmal von Portalen kommt noch die Möglichkeit der Personalisierung der Funktionen hinzu.

- Abstract
- Seit Juni 2005 beteiligen sich auch wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken an der Deutschen Internetbibliothek. Der 2002 an den Start gegangene Kooperationsverbund aus 70 Öffentlichen Bibliotheken, der den Internetnutzern sowohl einen annotierten Linkkatalog als auch eine kostenlose E-Mail-Auskunft zur Verfügung stellt, bietet seit kurzem auch interessierten wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken die Möglichkeit, ihre zum Teil sehr fachspezifischen Informationsressourcen einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zu vermitteln. Neben Universalbibliotheken, wie z.B. die UB Oldenburg oder die SLUB Dresden haben bereits einige hochspezialisierte Informationseinrichtungen, wie die ZBMED in Köln und die TIB Hannover ihre Mitarbeit an der Deutschen Internetbibliothek im Rahmen der E-Mail-Auskunft signalisiert. Zu den inzwischen 20 neuen Teilnehmerbibliotheken gehören u. a. auch das Informationszentrum des Goethe-Instituts in München und die Schweizerische Landesbibliothek in Bern.

- Abstract
- Der vollständige Projektname von Renardus lautet "Academic Subject Gateway Service Europe". Renardus wird von der Europäischen Union im 5. Rahmenprogramm mit dem Schwerpunktthema "Information Society Technologies" im zweiten Thematischen Programm "Benutzerfreundliche Informationsgesellschaft" ('Promoting a User-friendly Information Society') gefördert. Die Projektlaufzeit ist von Januar 2000 bis Juni 2002. Insgesamt zwölf Partner (Principal und Assistant Contractors) aus Finnland, Dänemark, Schweden, Großbritannien, den Niederlanden, Frankreich und Deutschland beteiligen sich an diesem Projekt. Die Europäische Union unterstützt das Projekt mit 1,7 Mio. EURO, die Gesamtkosten belaufen sich inklusive der Eigenbeteiligungen der Partner auf 2,3 Mio. EURO. Das Ziel des Projektes Renardus ist es, über eine Schnittstelle Zugriff auf verteilte Sammlungen von "High Quality" Internet Ressourcen in Europa zu ermöglichen. Diese Schnittstelle wird über den Renardus Broker realisiert, der das "Cross-Searchen" und "Cross-Browsen" über verteilte "Quality-Controlled Subject Gateways" ermöglicht. Ein weiteres Ziel von Renardus ist es, Möglichkeiten von "metadata sharing" zu evaluieren und in kleinen Experimenten zwischen z. B. Subject Gateways und Nationalbibliothek zu testen bzw. zu realisieren

- Abstract
- Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken und Fachportale haben Konjunktur. Fortwährend werden neue eröffnet. Die DFG animiert die von ihr in einzelnen Universitätsbibliotheken finanzierten Sondersammelgebiete, ihre Spezialbestände online recherchierbar zu machen. Verbände und Institutionen streben danach, ihre Homepages zu fachspezifischen Informationsplattformen zu entwickeln. Mit der zunehmenden Verbreitung solcher Portale erhebt sich die Frage nach deren Nutzung und Nutzen. Aus der vorrangigen Sicht eines Nutzers und im übrigen interessierten Laien ergeben sich hier Fragen-nämlich dazu, wieweit auf den bislang realisierten Wegen tatsächlich alle aktuellen und, weitergedacht, künftigen Herausforderungen adäquat bewältigt werden können. Nachfolgend wird zunächst eine ausdifferenzierende Beschreibung des Problems vorgenommen (r). Daran schließen sich Überlegungen an, in welcher Richtung Problemlösungen vermutet werden.

- "Problembeschreibung Zunächst fällt auf, dass die vorhandenen Fachportale sehr häufig den kognitiven Hintergrund eines ingenieursystemischen oder archivbürokratischen Denkens erkennen lassen. Dieser kognitive Hintergrund mag für den Systemaufbau notwendig sein, doch stellt sich die Frage, ob er dem Nutzer - häufig anderer fachlicher Provenienz - an der Mensch-System-Schnittstelle aufgenötigt werden muss. Der Nutzer ist typischerweise Nutzer verschiedener Portale und verfügt in der Regel nicht über die Zeitressourcen, sich fortwährend in neue Portalsystematiken einzuarbeiten. Portale, die ihre Schnittstelle zum Nutzer nicht hinreichend selbsterklärend aufgebaut haben, werden daher schnell wieder geschlossen oder nicht wieder angesteuert. Denn der Nutzer hat als Idealbild die selbsterklärende Suchmaske Google oder vergleichbare Suchmaschinen im Kopf. Diese vermeintliche Verwahrlosung des Informationssuchverhaltens mögen anspruchsvolle Systemarchitekten bedauern, doch werden sie die Nutzer kaum durch kompliziert zu bedienende Portalarchitekturen umerziehen können. Hermann Rösch gibt in einem Übersichtsartikel "Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken - in Zukunft Fachportale. Bestandsaufnahme und Entwicklungsperspektiven" (Information - Wissenschaft & Praxis 2/2004) den state of the art zu internetgestützten Fachinformationssystemen wieder. Nimmt man die dort beschriebenen derzeit modernsten Varianten, Informationsressourcen zu erschließen, zur Kenntnis, dann fällt vor allem eines auf: Sie scheinen durchgehend einem bibliothekarisch-archivarischen Ansatz mit enzyklopädischer Orientierung verhaftet zu bleiben. Es geht um sammeln, kennzeichnen und wiederauffindbar machen, und zwar von möglichst allem, was irgendwann einmal relevant sein könnte. Beschrieben werden von Rösch (S.73-76) Erschließungsformen und Tools, denen sämtlich zwei beträchtliche Hürden innewohnen, die in der bibliothekarisch-archivarischen Vorgehensweise systematisch angelegt sind: Sie benötigen erstens einen immensen Personalaufwand zur Pflege der Angebote und zweitens jeweils system- und toolspezifisch qualifizierte Nutzer und Nutzerinnen. Genannt werden bei Rösch folgende Werkzeuge: die Auswahl von Webressourcen, um diese in einem Webkatalog zusammenzustellen; deren intensive Erschließung durch Metadaten, Fachthesauri, Fachklassifikationen und Universalklassifikation; fachliche Suchmaschinen, die eine Indexierung aller im Webkatalog erfassten Quellen über sämtliche Hierarchieebenen zur Voraussetzung haben; die Erschließung sowohl digitaler wie gedruckter Informationsangebote einschließlich der retrospektiven Digitalisierung wichtiger gedruckter Quellen; Volltextdatenbanken und sonstige Datenbanken aller Art. Allerdings werden auch zwei wichtige Entwicklungen genannt, die den innewohnenden Hürden gegenzuarbeiten versuchen. Das ist zum einen das Konzept der Verteilten Archive mit heterogenen Datenbeständen, in denen unabhängig von Medium, Speicherform und Speicherort von einer (Netz-)Stelle aus parallel recherchiert werden kann (ebd., S.73). Es ist zum anderen die Personalisierung, also die Möglichkeiten der Definition individueller Interessenprofile, statistischer Auswertung von Clickstreams und Clickrates zur Verwendung im Rahmen regelbasierter Segmentierung und Verfahren des Collaborative Filtering, individuelle Konfiguration von Portalseiten usw. (ebd., S. 78).
