    "Seit einigen Tagen kann man es nun wirklich sehen, das Wunderwerk der europäischen Kulturbehörde. Denn endlich hat die Europa-Kommissarin für Information und Gesellschaft, Viviane Reding, das vielleicht ehrgeizigste Projekt ihrer Digitalen Abteilung vorgestellt, "europeana" heißt es, und eine digitale Meisterleistung ist es schon jetzt in seiner prototypischen Form. Nichts weniger als eine neue Bibliothek von Alexandria ist angestrebt, eine Art Arche Noah der europäischen Kulturgüter, zugänglich für jedermann, der über einen geeigneten Zugang ins Internet verfügt. Seit 2005 arbeiten mehrere Technikgruppen daran, diese Güter auf einer einzigen Website digital zu versammeln, unter Mitarbeit von mehr als tausend europäischen Institutionen. Der Prototyp enthält jetzt schon rund drei Millionen Datensätze; die Zielvorstellung für das Jahr 2010 liegt bei zehn Millionen, vorausgesetzt natürlich, alle 27 Länder der EU beteiligen sich wie vorgesehen. Freilich, bis jetzt ist nur ein geringer Teil der existierenden Kulturgüter in diesem Bereich auch wirklich schon digital erfasst. Bezogen auf die aktuellen Datensätze gilt das leider besonders für den deutschen Beitrag. Nur ein Prozent der jetzt vorgestellten Objekte stammt aus Deutschland, dagegen 52 Prozent aus Frankreich, der Rest aus anderen Ländern. Sollte die Finanzkrise von heute das gesamte Projekt einfrieren, bliebe die deutsche Kultur für die zukünftigen Benutzer aus aller Welt also in tiefem Schatten. Man stelle es sich also vor: Europäische Bücher, Bilder, Filme, Kompositionen, gesprochene Literatur, Bauwerke, Archive, Museen, Bibliotheken im Netz. Jedes einzelne Objekt wird kommentiert, jedes wird sich zoomen und womöglich auch ausdrucken lassen. Jeder Mensch soll sich seine eigene Seite zusammenstellen können: My Europeana, mein Europa im Netz.
