    Abstract
    Betrachtet wird der europäische Entwurf der Informationsgesellschaft in der Folge des EG-Weißbuches von 1993 und der Tagung in Korfu (1994). Es zeigt sich die zentrale Rolle des Informationsengineering. Hier geht es um die Produktion, Speicherung, Verteilung und Abfrage von Informationen. Wirtschaftliche Kennziffern beleuchten den deutschen Informationsmarkt (Online-Datenbanken, CD-ROM, Videotex, professionelle Informationsvermittlung). Die Relevanz elektronischer Informationsdienste für die betriebswirtschaftliche Praxis (Branchen- und Konkurrenzanalysen, Benchmarking) wird anhand von konkreten Beispielrecherchen demonstriert. Elektronische Datenbanken gestatten, die wissenschaftliche Forschung im Rahmen der Wissenschaftsevaluation mittels Publikations- Zitations- oder Themenanalysen zu beschreiben und zu bewerten. Ein Kapitel beschreibt detailliert diejenigen Tätigkeiten, die beim Auf- und Ausbau elektronischer Informationsdienste routinemäßig durchgeführt werden, mit dem Ziel, Qualitätsmerkmale für die Informationstätigkeit abzuleiten. Die Komplexität der Informationstätigkeiten führt u.a. in Bereiche der fuzzy logic und der Informationshermeneutik. Abgeschlossen wird das Buch mit einer 'Anatomie' einer konkreten Datenbank. Beispiel ist die ifo Literaturdatenbank, die erfolgreich bei mehreren Hosts als Online-Datenbank sowie zusätzlich als CD-ROM Datenbank vermarktet wird

    Abstract
    Als experimentelles Förderprogramm des BMFT zielte der Modellversuch Informationsvermittlung darauf ab, die Nutzung von Online-Datenbankinformationen in unterschiedlichen institutionellen Bereichen anzuregen, zu erproben und zu intensivieren. Der Beitrag geht auf den besonderen Charakter des dem Modellversuch zugrundeliegenden Förderkonzepts ein, erläutert das Design der flankierenden Unterstützungsmaßnahmen und wissenschaftlichen Analysen und umreißt die Methoden der begleitenden Datenerhebung und -auswertung. Die Zusammensetzung und Struktur der sowohl in privaten Beratungsunternehmen, in nicht-kommerziellen wirtschaftsnah arbeitenden Einrichtungen als auch in Hochschul- und Forschungsinstituten geförderten Stellen wird beschrieben, und es werden die wichtigsten Auswertungen über das Rechercheverhalten der untersuchten Informationsvermittler präsentiert

    Abstract
    Als große Öffentliche Bibliothek verfügt die Zentral- und landesbibliothek Berlin (ZLB) über einen kompetenten Mitarbeiterstamm mit umfangreichen Erfahrungen in der Vermittlung von Informationen. Die Art, wie die Auskunft erteilt und Informationsvermittlung praktiziert wird, erweitert sich durch den Einsatz der modernen Informationstechnologien jedoch erheblich. Durch die technisch bedingten Veränderungen und die Weiterentwicklung dieser Tätigkeiten entstehen zunehmend sowohl neue Formen von althergebrachten, bekannten Dienstleistungen als auch ganz neue Formen der Informationsvermittlung - und dies alles vor dem Hintergrund der zum 1. Oktober 1996 erfolgten Fusion von Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek und Berliner Stadtbibliothek
