    Abstract
    Eine der wesentlichen Aufgaben als Fachreferent*in ist die inhaltliche Erschließung der neuerworbenen Literatur, sowie die Begutachtung und Auswahl der neu erschienenen Werke in den jeweiligen Fachgebieten hinsichtlich der Relevanz für die eigenen Sammlungen gemäß dem Sammlungsprofil der TU Wien Bibliothek. Im Zuge der Corona-Krise wurde die herkömmliche Arbeitsweise in der Sacherschließung beeinträchtigt, und es haben sich neue Herausforderungen, aber auch Möglichkeiten ergeben. Neben der fehlenden Autopsie der Literatur leidet auch die Sichtung und Erwerbung neuer Literatur unter der physischen Abwesenheit vom Arbeitsplatz bzw. der entsprechenden technischen Infrastruktur. Auch der persönliche Austausch mit den Kolleg*innen wurde deutlich erschwert. Neben den Schwierigkeiten wurden aber auch die neuen Handlungsoptionen auf beruflicher und individueller Ebene positiv gesehen. In dem Artikel werden unsere individuellen Erfahrungen an der TU Wien Bibliothek sowie Ausblicke in die Zukunft wiedergegeben.

    Abstract
    Als Erfinder des «Allgemeinen» gilt, gemäß dem Bericht des Aristoteles und seit diesem Bericht, Sokrates. Er ist es, der nicht mehr danach suchte, woraus ein Ding zu dem geworden ist, was es ist, oder wie es entstanden ist, sondern danach, «was [ein Ding] ist», und somit ist Sokrates der erste gewesen, der die Herausarbeitung des Allgemeinen (?a?????) forderte und mit seinen Fragen seine Gesprächspartner zu dieser Herausarbeitung trieb bzw. lockte; die Definition (???sµ??) war das Ziel des sokratischen Gesprächs, und die sokratische Aporie war das Vehikel.

    Abstract
    Das Historische Wörterbuch der Philosophie (HWPh), im Zeitraum von 1971 bis 2007 unter Mitwirkung von mehr als 1500 Fachgelehrten entstanden, ist eines der umfassendsten, bedeutendsten und auch erfolgreichsten Publikationsprojekte der jüngeren deutschsprachigen Geisteswissenschaften. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Lexika oder Enzyklopädien basiert das HWPh nicht auf einer Geschichte philosophischer Ideen oder Probleme, sondern auf der Geschichte der philosophischen Begriffe. In 12 Textbänden sowie einem abschliessenden Registerband dokumentiert das Lexikon in 17144 Spalten und rund 6000 Artikeln anhand zahlreicher präziser Belege und Stellenangaben Herkunft und Genese von insgesamt 3670 philosophischen Begriffen und beschreibt den Wandel ihrer Bedeutung und Funktion von ihrem ersten Auftreten bis heute. Das Konzept der begriffsgeschichtlichen Methode macht sowohl synchronisch Stellung und Bedeutung einzelner Begriffe in bestimmten Epochen oder bei bestimmten Philosophinnen und Philosophen als auch diachronisch deren Bedeutungsveränderungen innerhalb der abendländischen Philosophiegeschichte nachvollziehbar. Um die spezifisch philosophische Begriffsarbeit im Kontext des gesamten Wissenschaftssystems zu veranschaulichen, werden zudem auch Begriffe aus angrenzenden Fachgebieten - Theologie, Psychologie, Pädagogik, Soziologie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, Politik, Jurisprudenz, Medizin sowie aus den Naturwissenschaften - behandelt.

    Abstract
    Diskussionen um Datennetze und Informationstechnik drehen sich häufig um kompetentes Handeln. In der Publikation werden Voraussetzungen eines autonomen informationellen Handelns gezeigt: Abstrahieren, Analogien bilden, Plausibilitäten beachten, Schlussfolgern und kreativ sein. Informationelle Kompetenz ist gelebte Informationelle Autonomie. Es lassen sich Konsequenzen für ein zukünftiges Menschenbild in informationstechnischen Umgebungen ziehen.

    Abstract
    Werden Maschinen mit Begriffen beschrieben, die ursprünglich der Beschreibung des Menschen dienen, so liegt zunächst der Verdacht nahe, dass jene Maschinen spezifischmenschliche Fähigkeiten oder Eigenschaften besitzen. Für körperliche Fähigkeiten, die mechanisch nachgeahmt werden, hat sich in der Alltagssprache eine anthropomorphisierende Sprechweise bereits etabliert. So wird kaum in Frage gestellt, dass bestimmte Maschinen weben, backen, sich bewegen oder arbeiten können. Bei nichtkörperlichen Eigenschaften, etwa kognitiver, sozialer oder moralischer Art sieht dies jedoch anders aus. Dass mittlerweile intelligente und rechnende Maschinen im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch Eingang gefunden haben, wäre jedoch undenkbar ohne den langjährigen Diskurs über Künstliche Intelligenz, welcher insbesondere die zweite Hälfte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts geprägt hat. In jüngster Zeit ist es der Autonomiebegriff, welcher zunehmend Verwendung zur Beschreibung neuer Technologien findet, wie etwa "autonome mobile Roboter" oder "autonome Systeme". Dem Begriff nach rekurriert die "Autonomie" jener Technologien auf eine bestimmte Art technologischen Fortschritts, die von der Fähigkeit zur Selbstgesetzgebung herrührt. Dies wirft aus philosophischer Sicht jedoch die Frage auf, wie die Selbstgesetzgebung in diesem Fall definiert ist, zumal sich der Autonomiebegriff in der Philosophie auf die politische oder moralische Selbstgesetzgebung von Menschen oder Menschengruppen beziehungsweise ihre Handlungen bezieht. Im Handbuch Robotik hingegen führt der Autor geradezu beiläufig die Bezeichnung "autonom" ein, indem er prognostiziert, dass "[.] autonome Roboter in Zukunft sogar einen Großteil der Altenbetreuung übernehmen werden."

    Abstract
    Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

    Abstract
    Vorgestellt wird die Konstruktion eines thematisch geordneten Thesaurus auf Basis der Sachschlagwörter der Gemeinsamen Normdatei (GND) unter Nutzung der darin enthaltenen DDC-Notationen. Oberste Ordnungsebene dieses Thesaurus werden die DDC-Sachgruppen der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek. Die Konstruktion des Thesaurus erfolgt regelbasiert unter der Nutzung von Linked Data Prinzipien in einem SPARQL Prozessor. Der Thesaurus dient der automatisierten Gewinnung von Metadaten aus wissenschaftlichen Publikationen mittels eines computerlinguistischen Extraktors. Hierzu werden digitale Volltexte verarbeitet. Dieser ermittelt die gefundenen Schlagwörter über Vergleich der Zeichenfolgen Benennungen im Thesaurus, ordnet die Treffer nach Relevanz im Text und gibt die zugeordne-ten Sachgruppen rangordnend zurück. Die grundlegende Annahme dabei ist, dass die gesuchte Sachgruppe unter den oberen Rängen zurückgegeben wird. In einem dreistufigen Verfahren wird die Leistungsfähigkeit des Verfahrens validiert. Hierzu wird zunächst anhand von Metadaten und Erkenntnissen einer Kurzautopsie ein Goldstandard aus Dokumenten erstellt, die im Online-Katalog der DNB abrufbar sind. Die Dokumente vertei-len sich über 14 der Sachgruppen mit einer Losgröße von jeweils 50 Dokumenten. Sämtliche Dokumente werden mit dem Extraktor erschlossen und die Ergebnisse der Kategorisierung do-kumentiert. Schließlich wird die sich daraus ergebende Retrievalleistung sowohl für eine harte (binäre) Kategorisierung als auch eine rangordnende Rückgabe der Sachgruppen beurteilt.

    Abstract
    Die französische Philosophie der Gegenwart hat die Probleme der Moderne in ungewöhnlicher Schärfe zum Ausdruck gebracht. In ihrem Zentrum steht die Kritik der Rationalität, in den 80er Jahren beherrschte sie die Debatte um die Postmoderne. Weil sie sich von der Krise herausfordern läßt, polarisiert sie die Gemüter. Während die einen sie als neuen Irrationalismus geißeln, bejubeln die anderen die Destruktion der Metaphysik und setzen die »Differenz« absolut. Die italienische Philosophie, obwohl deutlich beeinflußt von den französischen Meisterdenkern, kommentiert deren Rationalitätskritik kritisch, bringt Korrekturen an und sucht neue Antworten. Der vorliegende Band bietet Orientierung für alle philosophisch Interessierten. Zwölf Porträts und zwei Gespräche lassen die Konturen eines produktiven philosophischen Spannungsfeldes sichtbar werden, zu dem so unterschiedliche Geister wie Claude Lévi-Strauss und Umberto Eco zählen.

    Abstract
    Dieses Lehr- und Studienwerk gibt eine sehr gute Einführung in alle Aspekte der heutigen (synchronen) Sprachwissenschaft. Präsentiert die wichtigsten Ansätze der linguistischen Forschung (sowohl Sprachebenen als auch Bindestrich-Linguistiken), berücksichtigt dabei gleichermassen klassische Theorien wie neuere Ansätze. Dieses Buch versucht erfolgreich zu halten, was es im Titel verspricht: ein Studienbuch zu sein, will sagen: als Buch das ganze Studium an meinem Schreibtisch zu kauern und nicht vergeblich darauf zu warten, daß ich es benutze. Den drei Autoren ist eine durchaus lesbare Einführung in alle klassischen (und auch "modernen klassischen") Bereiche der Linguistik gelungen, die nur den einen Nachteil hat, daß sie als Einführung schon wieder ein wenig zu ausführlich ist. Für Studierende der Linguistik ist das natürlich äußerst empfehlenswert: hier können sie sich gründlich einlesen, und anhand der zahlreichen Literaturangaben weiterlesen. Wer allerdings Sprachwissenschaft eher nebenher betreibt, ist zur Einführung mit diesem Buch vielleicht etwas überfordert. Hat man sich allerdings durch den Text gekämpft und vielleicht für seine(n) Einführungskurs(e) das Notwendige (und klausurrelevante) von der Spreu getrennt, dann kann dieses Buch ein einigermaßen verläßlicher Begleiter durch die nächsten Jahre Linguistik werden. So manchen wissenschaftlichen Primärtext kann es zwar sicherlich nicht ersetzen, aber das will es ja auch nicht. Ärgerlicher ist dagegen schon, daß manche Themen (etwa "Sprache und Politik", "Lexikologie") nur ganz am Rande oder gar nicht vorkommen. Aber dafür gibt es natürlich auch wieder gelehrte Werke, die man aufsuchen und -schlagen kann. Wer gerne gründlich lernt und auch eine gewisse Textmenge nicht scheut, ist mit diesem Buch auf jeden Fall bestens beraten.

Es gibt Bücher, die werden als Klassiker bezeichnet, weil sie zwei Eigenschaften haben: (1) Jeder ist der Meinung, dieses Buch müsse man gelesen haben, und (2) niemand hat es wirklich gelesen. Im Zeitablauf bildet sich dann der Mythos, dieses Werk zähle zur Rubrik der Klassiker oder Must-Reads. Karl Poppers "Klassiker" (im positiven Sinne) gehört mit Sicherheit in diese Kategorie. Schade ist daran, daß "Logik der Forschung" aus diesem Grunde scheinbar mit einer ungebührlichen Ehrfurcht und Scheu betrachtet wird. Dabei ist es nicht nur verständlich geschrieben, sondern in Teilen geradezu unterhaltsam zu lesen! (Das glaubt jetzt wahrscheinlich wieder keiner!) "Logik der Forschung" bietet jedem wissenschaftlich Interessierten einen grundlegenden Zugang zu den Methoden der empirischen Wissenschaft. Dort, wo viele Bücher über wissenschaftliche und/oder statistische Methoden anfangen, geht Popper noch einen oder zwei Schritte zurück, indem er dem Leser erst einmal plausibel macht, WARUM es eigentlich nötig ist, Althergebrachtes neu zu hinterfragen und sich von traditionellen Vorstellungen zu lösen. Jedem, der wissenschaftlich arbeiten oder nur kritisch denken will, sei dieses Buch ans Herz gelegt. Denn jede noch so moderne wissenschaftliche Methode läßt sich nicht zweckmäßig anwenden und vor allem interpretieren, wenn einem nicht z.B. die Induktionsproblematik geläufig ist, die Tatsache, daß sich Theorien und Modelle empirisch nicht verifizieren, sondern nur falsifizieren lassen. (Nach dem Motto: "Ich habe bisher nur schwarze Raben gesehen, also sind alle Raben schwarz!") Dieses Buch schult den kritischen Geist und ist deshalb eigentlich für jeden interessant. Darüber hinaus ist es wirklich gut geschrieben, vor allem im ersten Teil. Eine wirklich lohnende Investition. Laßt es nicht zum verstaubten "Klassiker" verkommen!!!

    Abstract
    Am 4. September erscheint die neue, dritte Auflage von "Kindlers Literatur Lexikon". Erarbeitet hat sie ein Redaktionsteam um Generalherausgeber Heinz Ludwig Arnold in nur fünf Jahren. Schneller geht es bei 18 Bänden mit insgesamt 14.760 Seiten wohl kaum. Möglich wurde die Rekordzeit durch die elektronische Kommunikation mit den 1500 Autoren aus aller Welt und durch eine gewaltige Datenbank, die die 21.200 Einzeltexte in verschiedenen Bearbeitungsstadien aufnahm. Bald kann jedermann in dieser Datenbank zu Werken der Weltliteratur stöbern in der gedruckten, 32,5 kg schweren Fassung, in der Online-Variante oder in beiden.

    "Interessenten können sich die Online-Variante schon jetzt bei einigen Buchhändlern zur Probe freischalten lassen. Mit ihr ist der Kindler von Verleger Helmut Kindler bereits in den 50er Jahren nach dem Vorbild italienischer und französischer Werklexika konzipiert und 1965 herausgebracht, die zweite Auflage folgte 1988 in einer für Nachschlagewerke schwierigen Gegenwart angekommen: Die kostenlose Konkurrenz im Netz ließ die Lexikonlegende Brockhaus im letzten Jahr aufgeben. Um so erstaunlicher, dass der Online-Kindler genauso viel kosten wird wie der gedruckte: 1950 Euro (ab 1.1.2010: 2400 Euro). Die Kombination beider Ausgaben ist für 2730 Euro (ab 1.1.2010: 3360 Euro), die Online-Aktualisierung für jährlich 99,95 Euro zu haben. Ob der Metzler Verlag sein erhebliches wirtschaftliches Risiko bei diesem Mammutunternehmen ausgerechnet durch eine prohibitive Preisgestaltung für die Online-Variante vermindern kann? Zumindest ein moderater Kombipreis wäre wünschenswert. Die Käufer erhielten damit das, was Thomas Rohde eine "statusdienliche Komponente" nennt (FR v. 30.6.2009). Das Buch sei "als ein überaus materielles Gut in der kollektiven Wahrnehmung verankert", daher müsse man, so Rohde, für eine gewisse Zeit die Preise für immaterielle E-Books mit einer materiellen Dreingabe rechtfertigen.
    Wer sich dennoch für den Online-Kindler entscheidet, den erwartet eine äußerst aufgeräumte Startseite. Hinter jedem Buchstaben verbirgt sich eine überwältigende Liste von Autorennamen. Darunter eine einfache Maske für die Suche im Volltext, in den biographischen Angaben, Biogramme genannt, in den Werken (einzeln oder zusammengefasst zu Werkgruppenartikeln) sowie den Literaturangaben. Bei den Autoren lässt sich nach Lebensdaten, Geschlecht, Geburtsort/-Land und Sterbeort/-Land fahnden, bei den Werken nach Titel, Erscheinungsjahr, Sprache, Haupt- und Untergattung. Die Textfelder sind schreibartentolerant, so dass sowohl "Dostojewski" wie "Dostoevskij" Erfolg hat. Etwas Geduld kann hingegen bei ausländischen Titeln nicht schaden. Denn die achtköpfige Redaktion und die 75 Fachberater für die 231 im Kindler vertretenen Sprachen haben sich zwar für die Anordnung der Werke unter dem Autorennamen entschieden während die letzte Auflage nach dem fremdsprachigen Originaltitel ordnete. Nun bewahrt ausgerechnet der Online-Kindler den originalsprachlichen Titel wie ein Relikt: Bei Dostojewski darf man sich zwischen "Zapiski iz mërtvogo doma" und "Chozjajka" entscheiden und erfährt erst in dem Artikel selbst, dass es sich um "Aufzeichnungen aus einem Totenhaus" und "Die Wirtin" handelt. Faszinierend wäre eine Suchmöglichkeit nach Motiven, Stoffen, Bildern. Was gänzlich fehlt, ist eine Speichermöglichkeit bisheriger Suchen; so aber muss man jedes Mal von Neuem beginnen. Und schmerzlich vermisst man die Möglichkeit, die Lexikontexte mit Bemerkungen, Bewertungen und Erinnerungen an die eigene Lektüre zu versehen. Der gedruckte Kindler hat also unübersehbare Vorteile.
    Nur die Online-Variante aber gibt Gewichtungen und Kanonentscheidungen schnell preis. 2349 Biogramme und Werke deutscher Autoren enthält der Kindler. Für Frankreich finden sich 1504, für Italien 778, für den Kongo 29 und für Sri Lanka 32. Wer die deutschen Autoren nach ihrem Geburtsjahr ordnet, findet nur 14, die nach 1960 geboren wurden: neben Ingo Schulze, Durs Grünbein, Felicitas Hoppe und Daniel Kehlmann auch die weithin unbekannte Katrin Seebacher. Die Auswahl wird für einige Diskussionen sorgen. Allerdings kann die Kindler-Redaktion geschmeidig reagieren: Schon jetzt wird an den Online-Aktualisierungen gearbeitet. 50 Texte sollen zum 1.1.2010 folgen, weitere 50 im Laufe des Jahres 2010. Unverständlicherweise ist die Aktualisierung nur mit der Online-Ausgabe zu abonnieren. Als Supplement zur Print-Ausgabe wäre sie ebenso sinnvoll."

    "Wer zweisprachig aufwächst, hat eine dichtere graue Hirnsubstanz. Das Lernen einer zweiten Sprache scheine die Struktur des Gehirns zu verändern, berichten britische und italienische Forscherjetzt im Fachjournal Nature (Bd. 431). Die Beobachtung stütze die wachsende Zahl von Hinweisen darauf, dass sich die Struktur des Gehirns in Anpassung an Umweltanforderungen verändern kann. Cathy Price vom Wellcome Department of Imaging Neuroscience in London und ihre Mitarbeiter hatten die Gehirne von zweisprachigen mit denen von einsprachigen Menschenverglichen. Die zweisprachigen Probanden besaßen durchweg eine dichtere graue Substanz in einem Gehirnbereich, der für das flüssige Sprechen zuständig ist. Der Unterschied war umso größer, je eher die Untersuchten mit dem Lernen der zweiten Sprache begonnen hatten."
