    Abstract
In 1989 a consortium of the national libraries of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and the UK agreed to cooperate in investigating the potential of CD-ROMs as a means of distributing and using national bibliographic data. The project, which was divided into 10 manageable sub projects, was launched in Jan 90. One major result is a draft specification of requirements for a common retrieval interface for bibliographic data, designed to match as closely as possible the needs of four user groups: acquisition librarians, cataloguers, reference librarians and end users. A second is the production of a pilot CD-ROM in UNIMARC; The Explorers, containing records from the national bibliographies of Denmark, Italy, Netherlands and Portugal. Other major products are MARC to UNIMARC conversion tables, and a multilingual interface. Valuable if sometimes painful experience was gained during the project

    Abstract
In Denmark the National Bibliography is produced in a nongovernmental institution, the Danish Library Centre. The task is defined precisely in a contract with the Ministry of Culture, and the cooperation with the interested parties from the library environment and the publishing environment is described. Managing the task in the Danish Library Centre is included in a quality management system, certified according to the ISO 9001 standard. Producing the National Bibliography is expected to be called for tender in the mid 1990s

    Abstract
Recently the European Community formed a single European Market, and is moving closer to some form of political union. Interest in the European Community has increased dramatically, placing increasingly heavier demands on library reference departments to acquire materials. The author located over 200 recently published reference titles in paper format treating the European Community. The most comprehensive of these items, those dealing either with the European Community as a whole or the Single Market, are reviewed. Selected items not reviewed are included in a separate list

    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue on the impact of technology on resource sharing: experimentation and maturity. The creation of a nationwide bibliographic database has been the shared responsibility of the national libraries, the major bibliographic utilities, and the individual libraries. Libraries have contributed their local cataloguing records to the national hosts, the bibliographic utilities, which in turn made these records widely available. The emergence of local shared automated library systems has introduced a new set of stakeholders into this environment. Their participation in bibliographic networking will result in a decentralized nationswide bibliographic database stored in multiple locations

    Abstract
Though rich collections of conference proceedings are available in Indian science and technology institutions, no retrieval tool or union catalogue is available to provide access to them at regional or national level. Describes the work of INSDOC in creating a database of science and technology conference proceedings and publishing a union catalogue of them. INSDOC Regional Centre, Bangalore was entrusted with the job of covering the science and technology libraries in Bangalore, India. Notes their experiences of developing the database using the Micro-CDS/ISIS software package and publishing the first volume of the union catalogue using a desktop publishing system

    Abstract
States that since 1980, UKOLN (the UK Office for Library and Information Networking) has been carrying out a survey to monitor the availability of bibliographic records in the BNB files on BLAISE. Looks at the survey and the new sources to be included in the extended survey. Presents a set of source profiles which have been prepared to accompany the results for each source and gives some comparisons of the features of different sources

    Abstract
Standard numbering has been a most efficient tool for publishers, the book trade and libraries during the last 25 years; it has led to rationalization, more efficiency and higher speed of most operations. With the development of new media the coverage of standard numbering systems has been extended. A new standard covers printed music which offers the same options as ISBN and ISSN and will enable the music trade to rationalize its operations, especially in connection with the EAN bar code. Current discussions focus on a wider use of the Standard Address Number, and similar location codes which would be another major factor of rationalization

    Abstract
2 experiments investigated how textual factors influence the perception of bibliographical records. Subjects in the 1st experiment browsed indexes for the subject discriptor associated with the displayed record. Results showed that topical and broader descriptors are matched to records more easily than narrower descriptors. In the 2nd experiment, subjects ranked the relevance of descriptors for a bibliographic record. The interaction of 3 textual factors are reported: a semantic distance, direction up or down a generic tree of descriptors; and term overlap. Both experiments found that relevance perceptions degraded systematically with semantic distance, but the rate of degradation was different for top and bottom records. Term overlap modified these effects

    Abstract
Discusses a range of factors which librarians should consider before cancelling printed versions of abstracting and indexing services in favour of subscribing to CD-ROM equivalents. Factors include: use, cost, space, licence agreements, covergae, data base content, retrieval software, frequency of updates, single user limitation, and CD-ROM shelf life
