    Abstract
The European Community has funded a project to investigate all aspects of the use of CD-ROM as a vehicle for the dissemination of the bibliographic data of the 7 countries participating in the European Community's National Libraries project on CD-ROM. Reports the results of a sub-project which focused on the potential use of CD-ROMs as a source for downloading catalogue results. Outlines the history of the project and summarises its conclusions. Focuses on the BNB on CD-ROM as a cataloguing source

    Abstract
The DanBib system is a nation-wide union catalogue offering a number of common functions and a network to all Danish libraries - public as well as academic ones. The system is managed by the Danish Library Centre Ltd - a privately organized company owned by national and local government together with the biggest Danish publishing house. The Danish way is, indeed, unique in an international context. In this article a number of basic prerequisites which had to be fulfilled to bring about the Danish solution are discussed.

    Abstract
In this paper, the role of bibliography in the global learning society is examined. Through an analysis of issues characterizing modernity and globalization, an understanding of bibliography located in light of these issues. I argue that by considering bibliography as a document performing a particular communicative activity with a particular purpose and as a genre that both creates particular expectations as to how to use a bibliography and how to recognize a given bibliographical activity, bibliography as a form of knowledge organization may be able to deal with the effects of modernity on social and cultural communication. I conclude that these ways of understanding bibliographical activity may provide means as to how understand and situate the role of bibliography in the global learning society.

    Abstract
In June 1997 the British Library (BL) organized a seminar to consider and discuss some of the issues facing the BL as it seeks to develop the scope and coverage of the BNB. Lists the key points discussed and draws attentian to a consultation paper published by the BL seeking the views of the wider library and information community on whether its approach is a valid one

    Abstract
In 1989 a consortium of the national libraries of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and the UK agreed to cooperate in investigating the potential of CD-ROMs as a means of distributing and using national bibliographic data. The project, which was divided into 10 manageable sub projects, was launched in Jan 90. One major result is a draft specification of requirements for a common retrieval interface for bibliographic data, designed to match as closely as possible the needs of four user groups: acquisition librarians, cataloguers, reference librarians and end users. A second is the production of a pilot CD-ROM in UNIMARC; The Explorers, containing records from the national bibliographies of Denmark, Italy, Netherlands and Portugal. Other major products are MARC to UNIMARC conversion tables, and a multilingual interface. Valuable if sometimes painful experience was gained during the project

Briefly describes the emergence of Bowker's Books in Print as BowkerPower; focusing on the use of the X12 standard as a mechanism for product development entailing the migration of the basic database from a mainframe to client server technology using a small processor linked to 70 PCs. Briefly mentions Global Books in Print as a combination between Books in Print and Whitaker's Books in Print

    Abstract
In Denmark the National Bibliography is produced in a nongovernmental institution, the Danish Library Centre. The task is defined precisely in a contract with the Ministry of Culture, and the cooperation with the interested parties from the library environment and the publishing environment is described. Managing the task in the Danish Library Centre is included in a quality management system, certified according to the ISO 9001 standard. Producing the National Bibliography is expected to be called for tender in the mid 1990s

    Abstract
Recently the European Community formed a single European Market, and is moving closer to some form of political union. Interest in the European Community has increased dramatically, placing increasingly heavier demands on library reference departments to acquire materials. The author located over 200 recently published reference titles in paper format treating the European Community. The most comprehensive of these items, those dealing either with the European Community as a whole or the Single Market, are reviewed. Selected items not reviewed are included in a separate list

    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue on the impact of technology on resource sharing: experimentation and maturity. The creation of a nationwide bibliographic database has been the shared responsibility of the national libraries, the major bibliographic utilities, and the individual libraries. Libraries have contributed their local cataloguing records to the national hosts, the bibliographic utilities, which in turn made these records widely available. The emergence of local shared automated library systems has introduced a new set of stakeholders into this environment. Their participation in bibliographic networking will result in a decentralized nationswide bibliographic database stored in multiple locations
