- Abstract
- The Electronic Text Center, Virginia University, has been mounting SGML full text databases online since 1992 and is actively building a user community around this Internet based resource. Reports the Library's efforts to integrate these databases into the training, cataloguing, preservation and collection development areas of the library's operations with particular reference to problems such as: the desire for software and platform independent texts; and attempts to solve the cataloguing problems involving SGML bibliographic records using such techniques as the Text Encoding Initiative

- Abstract
- Globes are a unique cartographic format with special characteristics that need to be considered when providing bibliographic description and access. This article describes the challenges and characteristics of cataloging globes. It provides practical assistance in applying specific MARC 21 fields for globes. Special consideration is given to those fields that are unique to cataloging globes including: physical description areas, title, and subject access.

- Existing subject headings lists and classification schemes are inadequate to deal with the very specific and rapidly developing subjects of theses and dissertations, and as a result libraries find it costly and time consuming to perform original and full cataloguing of these materials. - Abstract
- Maps have bibliographic characteristics which present unusual challenges to traditional cataloging practices. Rare maps carry these challenges even further by requiring bibliographic descriptions that identify and distinguish the item in hand from any other copies. While it has been acknowledged that rare maps should be bibliographically described in a different manner than modern maps, as rare printed texts are described in a differently than modern texts, the map cataloging community is uncertain about how this should be accomplished. This article attempts to identify some problems unique to the cataloging of rare maps. It also discusses the appropriateness of current map cataloging rules for rare maps and the importance of thorough cartobibliographic research.

- Abstract
- Describes the origins of the CATaloguing and Retrieval of Information Over Network Applications (CATRIONA) Study in the BUBL Subject Tree service and nots its aims: to investigate the requirements for developing procedures and applications for cataloguing and retrieval of networked resources (particularly via the Internet); and to explore the feasibility of a collaborative project to develop and integrate them with existing library systems. The project established that a distributed catalogue of networked resources integrated with standard Z39.50 library system OPAC interfaces with information on hard copy resources is already a practical proposition at a basic level. - Abstract
- Chinese names in the original script present relatively few problems for those familiar with the written language. When those names are transliterated according to established standards, some intelligibility may be lost, but they are still recognizable in most cases. However, names transliterated from non-standard Chinese according to free-form transliteration schemes can be very difficult to identify for the purposes of bibliographic control. This essay discusses the nature of non-standard Chinese names in English, and offers suggestions for establishing such entities in library catalogs.

- Abstract
- In some existing cataloging records, there is evidence of considerable confusion in cataloging graphic representations of geologic measurements. The cataloging of geologic sections differs from the cataloging of maps in six areas: leader fields in a USMARC-formatted record; 0xx fields in a USMARC-formatte record; Scale; Physical description; Notes; and Subject headings. This paper will explain the use and importance of geologic sections, clarify why they should be cataloged in the USMARC Map Format, explain why they are called ''sections,'' define what is meant by ''geologic section,'' prescribe the rules for cataloging, and demonstrate the proper procedure for cataloging a geologic section.

- Abstract
- Remote-sensing images are valuable library resources, which provide highly useful information to a variety of library patrons. They are graphic representations of spatial relationships recorded by a device that was not in physical contact with the geographic entity being studied. Effective access and description in the library catalog is necessary so that these images may be found and used. This article discusses characteristics of remote-sensing images and maps: how to identify them; and how to catalog, classify and provide subject access for them. A variety of remote-sensing items and their catalog records are reproduced and discussed, including application of the new Remote-sensing 007 field.

- Abstract
- Librarians in the United States always seem to be trying to reduce their costs and share resources through various centralized or cooperative endeavors. Early cooperative cataloging efforts, prior to 1967 when the MARC format made its appearance and automation took off, clearly recognized the need to create a shared national resource of bibliographic records. Yet, the dreams of cataloging it once for all turned into nightmares over and over as many schemes were tried and failed. However, some schemes succeeded and millions of items were cataloged through these early efforts. The promise of our preliminary steps in cooperative cataloging during the pre-automation era sparked our imaginations and raised our hopes for the future.

- Abstract
- Anglo-American codes are examined to determine the implicit or acting concept of work in each, in order to trace the development of our current implicit concept of work, as embodied in AACR2R. The following conditions are examined, using comparison tables. (1) same work with different appendages (illustrated works, music with text, texts with commentary and/or biographical/critical material, scholia); (2) separately published parts of a work produced by the exercise of several different functions; (3) appendages to a work published separately (commentaries without text, concordances, continuations, indexes, sequels, supplements); (4) change in title of a work. A trend away from the collocation of the editions of a work called for by the second objective of the catalog is identified. It is suggested that this tendency stems from failure to take advantage of newer technologies for building catalogs

- Abstract
- Describes the role of the Library of Congress (LoC) in leading cooperative initiatives to overcome the crisis in cataloguing borught about by cuts in cataloguing departments. With the aim of making bibliographic control better, faster, and cheaper the LoC invited experts to discussions from which emerged the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). Officially established in 1995, the PCC is a coalition of libraries working to increase the availability of unique records created to agreed standards. Membership now exceeds 200. Participants can join programmes for name and series authorities, subject-headings-classification proposals and contribute bibliographic records to BIBCO. Explains the democratic structure of the coalition and assesses the achievements of the LoC and PCC in pursuit of the various goals. Reviews the accomplishment of the Cooperative Online Serials Program and international ventures, involving Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand and lists the benefits of participation in cooperative endeavours

- Abstract
- The Texas A & M University Modern Languages Department has been expanding its curriculum to include courses in Chinese. To support this curriculum, the Evans Library has recently acquired titles in Chinese. The Original Cataloging Department did not have the language expertise necessary to catalog these books in a timely manner. This project examined the feasibility of hiring student assistants with language expertise to assist the original catalogers. A graduate student, fluent in Chinese, was hired to transliterate the title page and verso, and provide descriptive information for fifty-five Chinese books. The student was also asked to provide a brief translation to assist in establishing LC Subject Headings and LC Classification numbers. Items for which copy was found on OCLC acted as a control for the accuracy of transliteration. Original catalogers then prepared the bibliographic records for the remaining titles. Utilizing the student's language expertise resulted in the processing of materials in a timely manner benefiting the university community.

- Abstract
- Educators and practitioners usually have very different views on what should be included in cataloging courses. The educators believe that a good theoretical foundation in bibliographic control and subject analysis will prepare graduates to work as catalog librarians. The practitioners usually believe that the person who completes a cataloging class in library school is qualified to begin a training program. I have been asked to present my views on education for cataloging from the perspective of a practicing cataloger who spends a portion of her time as a library science educator devoted to teaching cataloging.

- Abstract
- Cataloging and accessing non-roman languages, such as the languages in the JACKPHY group, have been better served because of the inclusion of vernacular languages in their bibliographic records. However, Southeast Asian languages such as Thai, Lao or even Burmese present other problems for catalogers because only romanized versions of these languages are present in current bibliographic records. The problems in cataloging and accessing the materials in these languages occur not only because of the romanization system but also due to the nature of the languages themselves. This paper presents a number of problems related to the cataloging of Thai language materials.
