Und doch fällt es aus dem Rahmen. Kein Computer oder Betriebssystem wird gehackt, sondern das Gehirn. Wie die anderen »Hack«Bücher ist es nicht als Sachbuch im herkömmlichen Sinn angelegt, sondern als Sammlung von hundert Experimenten, »Hacks«, aus zehn verschiedenen Bereichen. Gezeigt werden erstaunliche Selbstversuche, unter anderem zum visuellen System, zu Aufmerksamkeitssteuerung, Hören und Sprache, Bewegung, Erinnerung, Schlussfolgerung und Gestaltwahrnehmung. Jedes neurologische Phänomen wird zunächst allgemein erläutert; es folgen die Beschreibung eines zugehörigen Experiments und eine kurze Erklärung sowie Angaben zu weiterführenden Texten und Internetlinks. Tom Stafford, Psychologe an der Universität Sheffield (England), und Matt Webb, Ingenieur, Designer und freischaffender Autor, unter anderem für die BBC, wurden von Spezialisten auf dem jeweiligen Gebiet unterstützt. Die einst beliebte Metapher vom Gehirn als Computer ist in der ursprünglichen Form nicht mehr haltbar, wie auch die Autoren im Vorwort einräumen. Dafür haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu viele und wesentliche Differenzen offenbart, etwa was Speicherung und Verarbeitung von Informationen angeht. Dennoch gibt es hinreichend viele Parallelen, um die Verwendung des Begriffs »Hack« zu rechtfertigen.
