    Abstract
Contribution to an issue devoted to assessment and accountability in reference work. Through the reference interview and bibliographic instruction, librarians have the opportunity to familiarize students with the vast power of CD-ROMs, to teach them to harness that power, and to provide them with the critical skills necessary to question whether a particular CD-ROM database is the appropriate place to find information on a certain topic. Includes specific methods for doing this

    Abstract
CD-ROM based information retrieval systems, which have been used in academic libraries since the late 80's are now being found in many high school library media centres. The purpose of this study was to determine if students who use the CD-ROM database found more articles in less time than those who used the print version of the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature and if they were more satisfied with this search method

    Abstract
Illustrates the difficulty of instructing CD-ROM end users at a new university library, caused by the different levels of knowledge of the users, based on the experience of the library of University Carlos 2 de Madrid. Concludes that easy menu search interfaces, training of end users to be self searchers, and training librarians the trainers of end users, are the objectives of the CD-ROM end user training department in a brand new university library

    Abstract
At the start of the academic year reference staff are hard pressed to provide sufficient assistance to first time users of CD-ROMs, who have missed bibliographic instruction classes, or who need more guidance before searching. The literature on CD-ROMs was reviewed, and a survey conducted to estimate the training needs of searchers. It was found that 100% of the inexperienced searchers required assistance while searching, and 50% of their search strategies were later rated as poor. More than half the experienced searchers also needed the librarians assistance, and 31% of this group demonstrated a poor understanding of searching techniques. The survey findings were incorporated into CDIntro, a computer assisted learning package designed by the authors

    Abstract
Presents a study to assist reference librarians/bibliographers in the selection of electronic formats of indexes and abstracts. It incorporated input from both general and experts users in a comparison of CD-ROM and Internet versions of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA). The results indicate that CD-ROM technology, in spite of its user-friendliness, has limitations. The Internet version of ASFA has more current records, offers more comprehensive coverage of the ASFA databases, and allows unlimited remote access by faculty, staff, and students. Limitations of the Internet version include speed of access, search engine inadequacies, and the need for a more extensive training programme

    Abstract
Examines the traditional role of the reference librarian and considers changes as the result of information technology. CD-ROMs are revolutionising the way reference services are organised; they change the priorities and affect the basic skills of the staff. The changes that occur are evident in 5 major areas: the range of databases in a multi-media environment; the chnaging function of the reference service; the retraining of staff and users; the changing of reference interview; and the reappraisal of user education

    Abstract
The University Libraries of the Univ. of Houston created an experimental Intelligent Reference Information System (IRIS) over a two-year period. A ten-workstation CD-ROM LAN was implemented that provided access to 19 citiation, full-text, graphic, and numeric databases. An experts system, Reference Expert, was developed to assist users in selecting appropriate printed and electronic reference sources. This expert system was made available on both network and stand-alone workstations. Three research studies were conducted

    Abstract
Electronic information resources, such as CD-ROM bibliographic databases, are transforming significantly the way academic researchers find information and the way in which librarians assist academic researchers. CD-ROM and other electronic information resources in academic libraries bring new demands from end-users for services from librarians. In order to meet these new demands for services, academic librarians as information providers must work more closely in an active partnership with researchers and producers of electronic databases

    Abstract
With the availability of so many electronic databases in libraries today, patrons often have difficulty selecting the most appropriate resource. An examination of CD-ROM usage at Southern Illinois university at Carbondale shows that many students do not always select the best database for their research needs. Identifies database selection and searching problems. Recommends introductory workshops on electronic library resources to assist student in making better choices from the available CD-ROM databases

    Abstract
Discusses some obstacles to the use of electronic information. Outlines the major differences between information from online, CD-ROM and Web sources. Analyzes data from Arhus Public Library's (Denmak) business information services, 1992-96, citing electronic information media as the reason for the decrease in the number of enquiries after 1994. States that future users of electronic information will need a more professional attitude and new skills. Defines a concept of 'Web information literacy' and discusses 2 implications: knowledge about the Internet and its resources, and innovativeness as a major component in Internet user skills

    Abstract
Presents an update on new developments and basic sources in the field of reference books, noting the continued proliferation of large scale printed reference works, despite much talk of the book's demise. Covers CD-ROM publications as well as printed materials, and quotes current prices

    Abstract
Reports results of a survey concerning the issue of fees for reference services in university libraries in Israel where 51,9% of the participating libraries were found to charge for some of their reference services. Out of the libraries providing the specific service, 90,9% charge for online searches, 28,6% and 9,8% charge for mediated and end user CD-ROM searches respectively. Comparing these results with the current situation in the USA it was found that fewer libraries abroad charge for online searches and mostly none for CD-ROM searches. The study also investigated the attitude of university libraries towards outside users. Lists some alternative financial solutions for providing modern reference services in spite of their increasing cost. Recommends modification of the present definition of basic reference services versus specialized reference services
