- Abstract
- The rapid pace of OPAC implementation in this country is providing a fruitful environment for research, with a wide range of projects currently being undertaken, including a number concerned with the application of advanced information retrieval techniques to OPAC systems. This article reviews the current situation and describes some of the more important research projects being undertaken, particularly those funded by the British Library Research and Development Department. A brief description of the British Library's own OPAC project is also provided. The article concludes with an examination of the value of OPAC research and a look at where further research effort might best be concentrated

- Abstract
- Browsing refers to information retrieval where the initial search criteris are generally quite vague. The fundamentals of browsing are explored as a basis for the creation of an intelligent computer system to assist with the retrieval of online information. Browsing actions via a computer terminal are examined, together with new methods of accessing text and satisfying user queries. Initial tests with a prototype system illustrated the use of different retrieval strategies when accessing online information of varying structure. The results suggest the construction of a more intelligent processing component to provide expanded capabiblities for content extrction and navigation within text documents

- Abstract
- To an overwhelming extent, storage and retrieval systems were designed for information intermediaries who were specialists in formal, controlled documentation languages (e.g. classification systems, indexing languages) and who were then trained to utilize the query language of each retrieval system. However, with the advent of the microcomputer, there now exists, in the information retrieval industry, an obvious will to tackle both the professional and the personal information markets, as evidences by their more sophisticated yet more user-friendly systems and by the design and marketing of all sorts of interface software (front-end, gateway, intermediary). In order to make full advantage of these systems, the user must be able to master three different languages: the natural language of the discipline, the indexing language, and the system's query language. The author defines and characterizes each of these languages and identifies their issues and trends in the IR cycle and specifically in public online search services. Finally he proposes a theoretical model for the analysis of IR languages and suggests a few research avenues

- Abstract
- This article discusses the provision of "help" in interactive information retrieval system (IIRS) and describes a comparative survey of the "help" facilities of 16 such systems. Six guidelines for the design of a "help" facility are drawn up and these are used to evaluate the quality and friendliness of the "help" provided by each system. The scores indicate that "help" on IIRS is often inadequate, especially on the commercial online systems. This article concludes by discussing why "help" is so unfriendly and by suggesting some ways in which online "help" could be improved

- Abstract
- The study assessed the ability of children to categorise concepts that will be used to organise an information retrieval interface. The work was done of Project SEED (Science for Early Educational Development), a project to develop hands-on science programmes for elementary schools. Aims to tailor an interface to the particular skills of children in organising science knowledge. The results are promising for the design of IR interfaces based on children's abilities to manipulate information.

- Abstract
- Research in user behavior on online catalogs is in its early stages, but preliminary findings suggest that users encounter many of the same problems identified in behavioral studies of other types of bibliographic retrieval systems. Much can be learned from comparing the results of user behavior studies on these two types of systems. Research on user problems with both the mechanical aspects and the conceptual aspects of system use is reviewed, with the conclusion that more similiratiy exists across types of systems in conceptual than in mechanical problems. Also discussed are potential sources of the problems, due either to individual characteristics or to system variables. A series of research questions is proposed and a number of potential interim solutions ae suggested for alleviating some of the problems encountered by users of information systems
