    Abstract
Reports results of a survey of the online searching techniques of 50 university students, undergraduate and graduate, using the OPAC and CD-ROM databases at the Hayden Library, Arizona State University. The type of searching, use of library staff and online help screens, exposure to library user training, and length of time at the terminal for citation versus abstract products were recorded and analyzed. Results indicate that: a balance of online help products and library staff interaction is needed when providing help for users; careful attention needs to be paid to increasing the number of terminals and connections as abstracts are added to the databases being offered on the networks; and that even with exposure to more advanced searching techniques, users till rely on simple subject searching to locate required materials

    Abstract
Reports from a study investigating the extent to which academic end users conduct multiple search sessions, over time woth OPAC or CD-ROM databases at different stages of their information seeking related to a current research project. Interviews were conducted using a questionnaire with 200 academic end users at Rutgers University Alexander Library, NJ and University of North Texas, to investigate the occurrence of multiple search sessions. Results show that at the time of the survey interview, 57% of end users had conducted multiple search sessions during their research project and 86% of end users conducted their 1st search session at the beginning stage of their information seeking process. 49% of end users had conducted between 1 and 6 search sessions and 8% more than 6 search sessions. 70% of multiple search sessionss end users had modified their search terms since their 1st search session. Discusses the implications of the findings for end user training, information retrieval systems design and further research

    Abstract
User interfaces for CD-ROM products in the academic library environment must accomodate a variety of user and task profiles. Discusses the practical considerations that govern the implementation of interface design principles for such electronic data bases under the following headings: redesign goals; interaction style; menu design and implementation; system structure and the search paradigm; basic system operation and screen layout; simplified features; integrated novice and expert mode; redesign constraints; and hardware and software constraints

    Abstract
In order to find and correct spelling errors in the online public access catalog at Adelphi University, a visual inspection was performed of the 117.000 keywords indexed in the system. More than 1.000 errors were found. Certain long but common words such as administration, education, and commercial were found to generate many different misspellings. Most of the records were derived from bibliographic utilities, so the findings can be generalized to other OPACs. The same misspellings were also found in substantial numbers in CD-ROM databases. Misspellings were analyzed by the machine-readable catalog (MARC) field in which they were found, part of speech, and type of mistake. Lists of commonly misspelled root words and specific mistakes are included

    Abstract
The 1st 2 articles in this series (to be found in Technical services quarterly 7(1990) nos.1-2) concentrated on the evolution and change in the Health Sciences Library at Memorial University of Newfoundland's methods of catalogue generation, maintenance and production. The introduction of CD-ROM technology to library operations and the effects of theses systems on library workflow and staff were discussed. This 3rd and final article describes the selection, acquisition and implementation of an OPAC system for the Health Sciences Library and the effect the introduction this SPIRES-based system has had on library users as well as staff

    Abstract
Hartford University mounted a DRA Atlas Integrated library system in 1991, using a DECnet/Ethernet network and a VAX 6310 mainframe computer. As VAX VT320 terminals were available in many campus buildings, the library's catalogue could be searched from many locations and could be dialed up by remote users. Commercial databases in MARC format could be mounted on the system and searched with the same commands that users employed for the OPAC. Explains the use of Periodical Abstracts from UMI on the online catalogue. Discusses searching strategies and compares the Periodical Abstracts Ondisc CD-ROM with the tape loaded product

    Abstract
Computerised information retrieval systems, both online and on CD-ROM, have been available to students at the Stern Business Library at New York Univ. for several years. The means of ensuring that students derive maximum benefit from the new technology have included mandatory and optical workshops, and handouts alone. Presents the rationale for no longer offering user instruction other than in the form of prepared handouts designed to introduce the basic characteristics of a product and describes how to retrieve the relevant business information needed by graduate business students. Considers whether end-user instruction is still necessary or practical at the college level. Describes events at the Stern Business Library which indicate that it is not necessary

    Abstract
With the advent of the online catalogue the concept of the main entry of the card catalogue has been overtaken by the concept of multiple access points. This has particular significance for subject searching. Explores the subject access points provided for book entries by the Library of Congress, often duplicated in individual library catalogues, and compares these with entries for book included on CD-ROM bibliographic databases accessed by the library user. Discusses subject access in the UK and the USA and the need for standardization of cataloguing protocols. Underlines the importance for cataloguers of analyzing the needs of users and using technology to simplify and widen subject access to the OPAC

    Abstract
The UK's National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum joined the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) in 1986 and from 1987 to 1990 created catalogue records in MARC format on the OCLC database pending the introduction of a stand-alone computer system. the library now employs a Dynix microcomputer system for cataloguing, acquisitions, circulation, serials control, community information and the provision of online public access catalogues (OPAC). Describes library records currently available online, progress in retrospective conversion, internal networking and plans for external networking via the Joint Academic Network (JANET), and the provision of bibliographic and image databases in CD-ROM and videodisc format. Future developments will include interface between museum/image and library/documentation databases

    Abstract
Describes the major changes that have taken place in technical services in school libraries since 1967; cataloguing principles and practices, from earlier codes to AACR2; types of materials acquired, catalogued and processed, from mainly hardback books to a variety of audiovisual materials including CD-ROMs and videodiscs; and automation, which has allowed many school libraries to take advantage of shared cataloguing and to provide more standardized bibliographic control of library materials
