- Abstract
- An introduction to technical solutions for the generation and conversion of digital documents, using affordable scanner devices, document imaging systems and OCR technologies with cheap, networkable high storage capacity media such as CD-ROMs and CD-R signals the arrival of CD-ROM based document imaging systems. Describes the processes involved, including: the document imaging process; use of scanners to make bitmaps; data compression; advantages of indexing the images; OCR techniques; and document display. Lists some of the companies providing products and services applicable to CD-ROM and CD-R based document imaging systems

- Abstract
- Presents a brief report of a study of the use patterns and perception of faculty and researchers regarding CD-ROM services at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals Library, Saudi Arabia. The main objectives were: to ascertain use patterns and perceptions of CD-ROM services; and to elicit comments which would be used in developing a planning strategy to expand and enhance CD-ROM services

- Abstract
- Article adapted from a paper presented at a workshop on CD-ROM issues: CD-ROM challenges and opprotunities: issues of concern to librarians; sponsored by the Section of Social Science Libraries, 59th IFLA Council and General Conference, Barcelona, Spain, 22-28 Aug 93. Discusses service, cost and technology implications of investments in CD-ROM databases in research libraries and concludes that CD-ROM databases should be considered an integral part of the libraries' services, next to OPACs, and therefore they should be subject to the same critical evaluation as other services. Preliminary remarks about evaluation of online and CD-ROM services, regarding quality and availability, are followed by a discussion of costs which, although not seeming prohibitive at first, may grow as the library encounters difficult technological problems in its CD-ROM development

- Abstract
- As with print collections, the evaluation and selection of CD-ROMs should be based on established guidelines. Such attributes as computer network compatibility and platform are exclusively applicable to CD-ROM. Presents a knowledge based system to prioritize and select CD-ROMs for a library collection, operating on consistency driven pairwise comparisons. The computer system indicates the most inconsistent judgements and allows librarians to reconsider their position. After consistency analysis is completed, the software computes the weights of all criteria used in the evaluation process. The system includes a subsystem for evaluating CD-ROM titles. Offers a CD-ROM evaluation form. Discusses cost considerations; the use of pairwise comparisons in knowledge based systems with reference to data mining; the CD-ROM selection process; and consistency analysis of experts' judgements

- Abstract
- CDMARC serials is the Cooperative Online Serials (CONSER) database on Cd-ROM. The CONSER database is probably the most exhaustice source of serial titles ever assembled and fits onto a single CD. The hardware requirements are a CD-ROM drive recognising MSCDEX, a PC/XT or higher, 5 MB of free hard disc space and 530 K of free RAM. Reviews searching procedures. Records come in catalogue and card image, MARC tagged, custom labelled or custom tagged formats

- Abstract
- A grant aided evaluation of CD-ROM products was conducted in the St Louis, Missouri public library during 1991/92. The necessary investment in high quality hardware and staff expertise are grater hurdles than the costs of the CD-ROM products, many of which are relatively inexpensive. Looks at numerous practical questions concerning rules and restrictions posed by the introduction of CD-ROMs as library reference materials

- Abstract
- We have attempted to study the effects of CD-ROM searching on the reference and information services in a university library. The study is based on the statistics collected at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) Library, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The data collected before and after the introduction of the CD-ROM service is compared to analyse the CD-ROM impact on various reference services, like interlibrary loan, online searching, reference questions, staff requirement and development

- Abstract
- Describes an experiment that examined the relationship between successful searching of CD-ROM databases by undergraduate students and various types of instruction provided by the library staff. The findings indicate that the only level of instruction that resulted in a significant difference was a live demonstration of searches.

- Abstract
- Report of a survey 96 (out of 119) US and Canadian member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to determine their use of on-line and CD-ROM data bases, including OPACs. 4 catalogues were identified: on-line mediated searching (97%); CD-ROMs (96%); end-user on-line searching (45%); and locally mounted magnetic tapes (37,5%). The latter option is expected to be the most widely used option in the new future. Although CD-ROM caused some migration from on-line, most migration was from printed sources to CD-ROM. Tables show: on-line hosts most used for intermediary on-line searching; on-line data bases most after searched by intermediaries; end user on-line systems offered by most libraries; the 20 most popular CD-ROM data bases; and the 8 magnetic tape data bases accessible on OPACs

- Abstract
- Reports on the effect of 8 CD-ROM indexes on online searching at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals Library, Dharan, Saudi Arabia. Presents statistical data on online searching conducted for the faculty, graduate students and researchers, before and after the acquisition of the CD-ROMs. The findings indicate a considerable decline in online searching use owing to the introduction of the CD-ROM indexes, saving a large amount of money. Discusses the impact of CD-ROM indexes on staffing in the reference department

- Abstract
- Reviews the current market for CD-ROM databases with particular reference to the online versus CD-ROM versus print debate. Concludes that the most likely scenario is a steady convergence of technologies, at least until the end of the century. Review the current and the most likely future developments in the area of CD-ROM database contents, software, hardware, and marketing. Concludes that users will choose databases on the basis of such factors as: ease of use; power of use; storage and delivery capacity; quality; functionaliy; timeliness; overall appeal; and real cost, not just price. Lists the most likely candidates for successful CD-ROM database development; not yet available. Concludes that Windows user faces will steadily replace DOS based systems, but not unless the Windows replacements are truly better and not just different. Recommends that both Windows and DOS interfaces be loaded onto the same CD-ROM with each database allowing the user to choose which to use. Reviews likely developments in CD-ROM hardware and marketing strategies
