    Abstract
Reports results of a National Council on Archives project: to sourvey the state of automation of archival searching aids in the UK; and assesses the feasibility of establishing a National Name Authority File (NNAF). The investigation encompassed 3 elements: extent of use of computerised archival searching aids in record offices and other archives; preparedness of archivists to cooperate with the creation of national name authority files for personal, family, place and corporate names; and requirements and costings for establishing a central server to maintain and disseminate the authority files. Reports results of a questionnaire survey of record offices and archives, followed up by visits to representatives of the major national institutions to establish the context within which the NNAF might be created and used

    Abstract
Describes work of the BOPAC2 project, funded by the British Library Research and Inoovation Centre, from Sep 1996 to Jan 1997, to investigate the issues involved in managing large and complex retrievals involving Z39.50 searches, including searches of multiple databases. The system is a WWW front end that allows simultaneously access to a number of library OPACs via Z39.50. The system is designed to make access to large and complex retrieval simpler, similar records are clustered together and retrievals may be sorted in a number of ways and by different criteria. Describes the design, development and evaluation of the system with suggestions for future work

    Abstract
Describes the final phase of the work on the ELINOR (Electronic Library INformation Online Retrieval) project at De Montfort University, Leicester, which concluded in 1996. ELINOR was 2 phase project with 3 overall goals: to create a practical pilot system based on a commercial product (Excalibur EFS); to investigate the expansion of a small scale electronic library to a larger, distributed library system; and to develop a more efficient and effective means of accessing and sharing resources within a networked multi campus institution. ELINOR was successful in demonstrating that libraries may conveniently digitize and supply smal collections of high demand materials over a campus network in text anf TIFF format. Operational conditions have so far indicated that the barriers are not technological but involve copyright, use issues and sustainability

    Abstract
Presents the findings of the South Ayrshire Libraries OPen Learning and the Internet project, Sep 1997 to Oct 1998. The objective was to demonstrate how open learning materials available on the Internet could be integrated with the provision of local open learning resources to provide an enhanced learning environment in public libraries. The main areas of concentration within the project were information skills support to public library users and the provision of WWW based independent materials to learners. The organisation and retrieval of Web based resources for local use was a major issue throughout the project. Recommends the adoption of Dublin Core metadata standards, the connection of databases of resources with searchable wen pages, and the development of thesauri of terms used to index the Web based resources locally. Sstaff training, and the new skills which will need to be developed, were identified as issues. Cost was also identified as a related issue, extending to issues such as access to open learning material and the Internet

    Abstract
Reports a review of the literature on information seeking behaviour in fields other than information science. Fields covered were: innovation research, health communication studies; organizational decision making; and information requirements in information systems design. The review was an integrated review on the basis of what may be contributed to information science. Sets out a general model of information seeking behaviour and shows how that model may be reviewed in the light of work in other fields

    Abstract
Describes a project aimed at setting up a 1 stop scientific, technical and commerical information service for technical companies at Belasis Hall Technology Park, Cleveland, UK. The project accomplished this by: identifying the information needs of the existing and potential tenants; establishing how best to meet those needs (paying a special attention to the role of online information) and setting up a 1 year pilot project: disseminating the results of the project for replication elsewhere and making information provision an integral part of science park design; promoting information as a basis for problem solving and decision making; promoting close links with the users; determining which sources and methods of delivery are most relevant (patents, trade directories, market research reports, online searches); developing a charging policy for the service with a view to the service becoming self financing; increasing the partners' experience in resource sharing; developing a training needs analysis for both providers and users; developing performance indicators; and monitoring the service provided

    Abstract
Reports results of a study, conducted by the European Society of Paediatric Research (ESPR), to determine whether the information content of structured medical abstracts is greater than abstracts with traditional format and whether the efficacy of peer review is improved by the use of structured medical abstracts. The sample studied comprised the abstracts of papers submitted for the ESPR annual meeting and each abstract was assessed by a research worker by a research worker for information content by referring to a list of criteria. The words in each abstract were counted to obtain the information density of each and the abstracts were evaluated according to whether they were in an unstructured format, a semistructured format, or a more fully structured format. Although there was no significant difference in the scientific score of the scientific information density of the different formats there was significantly more information in the fully structured format. When the abstracts were resubmitted in structured format, there was always a highly significant increase in the information content

    Abstract
The 3rd version of what was previously called 'Libraries and information in Britain', replacing the original booklet produced for the IFLA 1987 conference and an expanded, updated version of the edition published by the British Library in 1992. Presents a state of the art review of the UK library and information scene, including the British Library and its directorates, school libraries, university libraries, and public libraries. Outlines the roles of professional associations, the education of library and information professionals, and the commercial information sector. Includes statistical data from the British Library directorates, the Library and Information Statistics Unit (LISU) and the Publishers Association and contains a list of current library and information science periodicals in the UK

    Abstract
Reports results of a project to develop guidelines, based on the development of a prototype system in the field of medicine, for producing computerized reference services capable of increasing the range and quality of responses to information needs. For instance, an automatic system that can be available 24 hours a day simultaneously to multiple enquirers over an intranet or the Internet. Genuine information requests from a variety of medical information settings were collected and analyzed to form a typology of needs, focusing particularly on qualitative aspects. The typology was mapped on to computerized techniques to form a system specification and developed into a prototype WWW system

    Abstract
Reports a study of undergraduate students' use of computer-based information retrieval services in relation to their cognitive and learning styles. Includes a survey of staff at Sheffield University, UK on their use of computer databases and the extend to which undergraduates are made aware of these services. Results show that undergraduate use is low and varies greatly between students of differnt faculties. Student searching behaviour was found to be basic and their performance inadequate. Significant correlation's between cognitive and learning styles and search behaviour were found. Computer-assisted learning (CAL) packages were developed and customised for 3 departments. Guidelines were drawn up based on the project's findings for introducing a computerised information sources programme into the undergraduate curriculum and preparing CAL teaching packages on information skills
