    Abstract
Highlights 2 major problems of the WWW metadata: it will take some time before a reasonable number of people start using metadata to provide a better Web classification, and that no one can guarantee that a majority of the Web objects will be ever properly classified via metadata. Addresses the problem of how to cope with intrinsic limits of Web metadata, proposes a method to solve these problems and show evidence of its effectiveness. Examines the important problem of what is the required critical mass in the WWW for metadata in order for it to be really useful

    Abstract
This paper proposes, as a backlog reduction strategy, a national cooperative cataloging program among libraries with major collections in the Slavic and East European languages and in the languages of the former Soviet Union. The long-standing problem of cataloging backlogs is discussed, including a brief discussion of some of the other ways that have been used to address the problem. The proposal for a cooperative effort is outlined and some of the cataloging issues to be considered are discussed.

    Abstract
Outlines some of the issues that must be considered before adopting digital imaging of paper based materials as a method of preservation. Discusses the quality of digital images in terms of resolution and pixel depth, as well as issues of authenticity, verification and bibliographic integrity. Points to the fallacy of digital incorruptibility and the potential problem of obsolescence of equipment and standards

    Abstract
State of the art review of enhancements in online catalogues over a 3 year period, taking for granted those features that are now standard and mainly discussing issues related to problem areas, in particular, subject access and user searching behaviour, as well as new developments that directly impinge on the catalogue's future: new interface developments and network access and resources

    Abstract
Examines techniques for automatically generating domain vocabularies from large text collections. Focuses on the problem of generating multi-word vocabulary terms (specifically pairs). Discusses statistical issues associated with word co-occurrences likely to be of use in a natural language interface. Provides a more objective evaluation of the selection procedures. As substantial experimentation with subjects using a working query system is absent, all evaluation is necessarily subjective. Uses surrogate for experimentation by relying on pre-existing dictionaries as indicators of domain relevance

    Abstract
The string-searching problem is to find all occurrences of pattern(s) in a text string. The Aho-Corasick string searching algorithm simultaneously finds all occurrences of multiple patterns in one pass through the text. The Boyer-Moore algorithm is the fastest algorithm for a single pattern. By combining the ideas of these two algorithms, presents an efficient string searching algorithm for multiple patterns. The algorithm runs in sublinear time, on the average, as the BM algorithm achieves, and its preprocessing time is linear proportional to the sum of the lengths of the patterns like the AC algorithm
