    Abstract
An article in documentaliste 35(1998) no.1, presented the concept and contexts for the application of records management. This article, devoted to the experience of archivists, continues to focus on professional active and semi-active records management practices and their evolution in different countries and eras. P. Barbat analyzes the discovery in France in the 1960s of active records and the invlovement of both archivists and the departments actually generating the records in their management, and the impact this development has had on archival practices. Also discusses the impact that the international standard now being drafted by ISO will have on the profession. A government and a company archivist also describe their experience

    Abstract
All classifications are based on ideologies and Dewey is marked by its author's origins in 19th century North America. Subsequent revisions indicate changed ways of understanding the world. Section 157 (psycho-pathology) is now included with 616.89 (mental troubles), reflecting the move to a genetic-based approach. Table 5 (racial, ethnic and national groups) is however unchanged, despite changing views on such categorisation

    Abstract
Discusses the possibilities and difficulties encountered when using a thematic index to search contemporary art databanks. Jaconde and Videomuseum, 2 French databanks, are used as examples. the core problems found in the study are the methods and limits of indexing in both systems. A thematic index should be developed that is better adapted to 20th century art, based on the complementary and reciprocal relationship between text and image, and which fully exploits hypertext

    Abstract
The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

    Abstract
Developed to meet the needs of the library at the Université Laval, the Répertoire de Vedettes-matière is used by many institutions and is recognized as the Canadian standard by the National Library of Canada. The Répertoire also supported the creation of a union catalogue network and its use in libraries abroad, especially the Bibliothèque Nationale in France, confirms, this status and guarantees its continuing role in the increasing standardization of subject headings used in the French-speaking world. Concludes the history of the Répertoire and the major events that shaped its progress

    Abstract
The creation of electronic information in the form of structured documents is gaining popularity. It is thus necessary to develop information retrieval tools fitted to this type of document. Presents the results of a research project aimed at identifying human-computer interface elements that can support information retrieval in structured-document bases. The research included a review of the literature and of existing systems, as well as the design, development, and user testing of a prototype information retrieval system for SGML document bases. Makes 5 recommendations for the design of structured-retrieval systems

    Abstract
Analyzed a special type of man-mchine interaction, that of searching an information system with natural language. A model for full text processing for information retrieval was proposed that considered the system's users and how they employ information. Describes how INIST (the National Institute for Scientific and Technical Information) is developing computer assisted indexing as an aid to improving relevance when retrieving information from bibliographic data banks

    Abstract
Scientific and technical information directorate of the National Scientific Research Centre of France (CNRS) has created a Section for research into information science (CERESI). 2 factors led to this decision: Information plays a part in competitiveness. It is also the object of much scientific study. Empirical data abound. The moment is ripe to try to integrate these observations into a framework that will allow us to consider the relationship between information and innovations. Outlines the major points of the CERESI scientific programme.

    Abstract
Reports an experiment, conducted in Mar 95 in the context of a course at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Montreal, which evaluates the information retrieval capabilities of a manual index and a semi automated index developed according to the Bennion method. The application of a formula developed by Bennion shows that the indexes are almost identical

    Abstract
The application developed for products and services offered by companies present INFOMART, the permanent marketplace for information and communications technologies, is an example of a data base that can be accessed simultaneously in the conventional, multi-criteria literature searching way and in a more user friendly fashion by means of a hypertext interface. Information and orientation signposts are thus made available to INFOMART visitors, guiding them and assisting their contacts with participant companies. Describes both document and hypertext features of this information system designed for new converts and specialists alike.

    Abstract
Among the various European Community (EC) programmes designed to develop the market for information, Information Market Policy Action (IMPACT) is aimed particularly at professional information services that rely on data bases. The EEC hopes that this will bring about the creation of a true internal market of electronic information services. IMPACT activities in this context should improve market conditions and promote the use of modern information services. Other activities will support pilot projects which should eventually lead to the involvement of key sectors of the market.
