Abstract

An awareness exists among Italian librarians of the need for an established code of ethics for library reference services. Considers the principles that such a code should incorporate; the US Commitment to Information services, for example, affirms users' rights of access to library books and resources, regardless of content and opinions expressed. Censoship is opposed and people are not barred from library use for ethnis, social or religious reasons. An ethical code would require library staff to be impartial, give attention and respect to users, allocate time properly, and avoid prejudice. Abstract

Describes a proposed system for helping public library users, in praticular students, in their document searches. The system would directly involve users in compiling cards that indictae the various library sources (encyclopedias, books, newspapers, magazines, etc.) from which they retrieved bibliographic data. These cards would then be used to create a search path catalogue having 2 sections: general research topics; and keywords. Subsequently the librarian would form a database from this information. Such a system would not only benefit other researchers but also help the library to plan acquisition and rationalise its document arrangements. Abstract

A crucial question for librarians is whether to catalogue Internet information sources, and electronic sources in general, which may contain metainformation of the texts of articles. Librarians can help researchers with data identification and access in 4 ways: making OPAC available on the Internet; providing a complete selection of Gopher, Ftp, WWW, etc. site lists; maintaining a Web site, coordinateted by the library, that functions as an Internet access point; and organising access to existing search engines that do automatic indexing. Abstract

EasyWeb is an Italian amde research program for library/archive users that allows simple access to Internet catalogue data via the WWW. The software is based on CDS/ISOIS and is currently available on the UNIX operating system with Intel 486 and Pentium processors. EasyWeb has been tested on the following operating systems: Olivetti, Sco, Novell UnixWare, Linux 1.2.13, Slackware with iBCS2; and in the new 1996 version will be installed on all other UNIX platforms (Solaris, HP, etc.). Abstract

The GRIS subject heading scheme is the outcome of a collaborative project of Italian research and academic libraries. Describes the efforts to introduce the scheme to a number of libraries in the Siena Library Service in Italy in the last 3 years. Notes the phases of this project, pricipally a series of trainign seminars and a year of experimentation, before agreement by most of the libraries to implement the scheme. Describes the main features of the electronic subject heading files as they now exist, as they cope with pre existing schemes and the new scheme. Provides statistical sata on these files and outlines the problems which remain to be solved in thre implementation of the scheme

Abstract

The Political Sciences Library of the University of Padua completed in 1994 a pilot project to add all its book material purchased since 1970 (some 20.000 monographs) to its public online catalogue. The library decided against creating a parallel database, and to work instead directly thorugh its existing SBN base, thus avoiding duplication of authors and titles and saving time. Library of Congress tapes were acquired and a special rapid cataloguing software (RAP) was developed, written in natural-Adabas. Describes the project's methodology, problems and results

Abstract

Analyses some problems that arise when cataloguing comic book/strip cartoon publications using the USMARC format, suggesting solutions for each of the 4 main forms in which cartoon titles appear - periodical titles; stories within periodicals and serials; serial titles; and albums - in the context of AACR2 interpretations. For genre cataloguing, terminology from an 'open' system such as the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) is preferable to the LCSH. Suggests ways to overcome USMARC's limitations when cataloguing cartoon characters

Abstract

The interfaculty centre of Bologna University began 2 years ago a project to 'translate' UDC codes into a user friendly thesaurus, with the object of creating an accurate, easy to use tool for online researches, especially those relating to periodical titles. The UDC numerical codes have been linked by a method based on synonyms to a series of corresponding verbal indices which express in natural language the concepts expressed by the codes. Thus researchers can retrieve information not only through UDC codes but also through their analogous verbal descriptors. Describes the origins and development to date of OLUC, the worldwide bibliographic database of OCLC launched by Ohio College in 1971. OLUC now has over 34m records, with publications in 400 languages. Aftere arly criticism of database accuracy, OCLC began quality improvement programmes in the 1990s, introducing the TechPro 'turnkey cataloguing' and Prompt-Cat acquisitions services. Explains how OLUC solved the 3 problems of duplicated records, sparse bibliographic data, and too many author and subject headings. OCLC has invested heavily in improving data quality, launching an authority control service in early 1996.
