    Abstract
    Reviews a series of studies conducted by C.C, Kuhlthau who investigated users' information seeking behaviour in libraries over a 10 year period. In her study she constructed and Information Search Process (ISP) Model which represents aspects of user activities as a whole including feelings, thoughts and actions or behaviour. Argues that, while the ISP model sheds new light on user studies, it has problems in the following areas: problem solving processes; the understanding of 'feelings'; and the method of investigating users' information seeking behaviour. Recommends that the ISP model be reconstructed from different perspectives and verified in areas other than libraries. This may lead to the development of a new model of information seeking

    Abstract
    Examines the assumption that people want to be presented with as many different media as are possible in a given application. Reports on an exploratory study designed to assess the media preferences og the 'person on the street' when presented with the choice of 7 different media combinations to find out some unknown thing in a public space. Findings suggests that people do not always prefer to access as many different media as are available. There was a bias toward having some media combination that includes graphics, but there was also some bias against having information presented using sound in a public space

    Reports on a study that contrdicts the hypothesis that building detailed subject knowledge into search system improves retrieval. A group with a background in molecular biology performed the same judgements when considering document retrieval as another group without subject knowledge. The untrained panel performed better than any of the members of the trained panel and almost at the level of the trained panel as a whole.     Considers what elicitation or requests for information search intermediaries make of users with information requests during an information retrieval interaction - including prior to and during an information retrieval interaction - and for what purpose. Reports a study of elicitations during 40 mediated information retrieval interactions. Identifies a total of 1.557 search intermediary elicitations within 15 purpose categories. The elicitation purposes of search intermediaries included requests for information on search terms and strategies, database selection, search procedures, system's outputs and relevance of retrieved items, and users' knowledge and previous information seeking. Investigates the transition sequences from 1 type of search intermediary elicitation to another. Compares these findings with results from a study of end user questions

    Abstract
    Reports results of a user survey, conducted at Reading University, UK, to find out the kind of service their users want, in particular, regarding opening hours. Results indicated that there was a clear consensus on some issues: in particular, more rapid reshelving of books; but preferred opening hours varied between different groups. In this respect the survey was regarded as being only partially successful as it did not point to a clear course of action which would satisfy the needs of all library users. However, useful data was collected and the availability of the Libra software for a further 5 years means that further surveys may be undertaken

    Abstract
    Librarians at the University of the Pacific, California (UOP) designed a replication of an earlier transaction log study carried out at Adelphi University, New York (LRTS 38(1994) no.3, S.293-305). It was hypothesized that library staff would use a feature that allows the searcher to limit a search by location or material type more often than users. It was also hypothesized that library staff and reference librarians would have a higher success rate than public users. The third hypothesis was that UOP users would perform keyword searches more often than library staff. Studies were conducted in 1995 in 1996 to test these hypotheses to provide comparative data on the search styles of users and staff. Searches of the INNOPAC database, using transaction logs, were performed by 4 terminal groups: public users, technical services staff, public services staff, and reference librarians. It was discovered that replicating a study is not nearly as straightforward as was initially thought. It was also found to be surprisingly difficult to compare year to year data at the same institution; primarily due to a continually changing technological environment

    Abstract
    Reports on research into the information-seeking habits of primary schoolchildren conducted under operational conditions. Three workstations with Internet access were installed in a grade-six classroom in suburban Montreal. After a short introductory training session for the entire group followed by short individual sessions for each student, 53 students, working in small groups, used these workstations over a six-week period to seek information on the Web of relevance to a class project assigned by their teacher. The project dealt with the Winter Olympic Games (recently completed at that time). The student objective was to locate relevant information for a poster and an oral presentation on one of the sports represented at the Games. All screen activity was directly captured on videotape and group conversations at the workstation were audiotaped. Demographic and computer literacy information was gathered in a questionnaire. This paper presents a map of the information-seeking landscape based upon an analysis of the descriptive statistics gathered from the Web searches. It reveals that the novice users favored browsing over analytic search strategies, although they did show some sophistication in the construction of the latter. Online help was ignored. The children demonstrated a very high level of interactivity with the interface at the expense of thinking, planning and evaluating. This is a preliminary analysis of data which will subsequently be expanded by the inclusion of qualitative data

    Abstract
    A survey of catalogue use in 1993 at Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed considerable dissatisfaction with the online catalogue's subject search facilities. Of those who used subject searching 64% preferred subject headings against only 2% who chose classification schedules. Library users make little use of the existing facilities for assistance and leaflets which are available in the library. It has, therefore, been decided to provide a programme of instruction in library use and to move towards a unified system of subject access to the library's catalogue
