    Abstract
Reports results of a study that examined factors influencing the adoption and use of electronic networks by science and engineering faculty in 6 small universities in the southerneaster USA. Part of the study gathered data on the purpose, type, and extent of electronic communications. Data were gathered by mail questionnaire and by follow up site visits. Reports on 5 types of network use, electronic mail, electronic discussion groups, accessing remote databases, accessing remote computer facilities, and file transfer. For each service, data are reported for frequency of use by purpose: research, teaching administration, social and current awareness. Outlines preliminary use indicators for each service in terms of heavy and moderate use

    Abstract
This report presents the results of a survey of users who access the University of California's online union catalog, the MELVYL library system, via microcomputers with modems or connections carried through local or wide area networks. The report includes descriptive statistics on user location, status, subject interest, affiliation, in-library versus out-of-library usage patterns, need for assistance, and desire for new features

    Abstract
Reports results of a survey of the online searching techniques of 50 university students, undergraduate and graduate, using the OPAC and CD-ROM databases at the Hayden Library, Arizona State University. The type of searching, use of library staff and online help screens, exposure to library user training, and length of time at the terminal for citation versus abstract products were recorded and analyzed. Results indicate that: a balance of online help products and library staff interaction is needed when providing help for users; careful attention needs to be paid to increasing the number of terminals and connections as abstracts are added to the databases being offered on the networks; and that even with exposure to more advanced searching techniques, users till rely on simple subject searching to locate required materials

    Abstract
Current online catalogs have problems providing reasonable subject access, often resulting in searches with too few or too many hits. These problems can be improved by enhancing MARC records, building semantic networks through cross-references, and linking subject headings to classification numbers. This paper describes a pilot project to design a hypertext search engine using these principles

    Abstract
Examines the problem of a compelling online news delivery system by focusing on how mass media audiences and online users differ in their assessment of news. It employed a 2-wave USA national survey to study the perception of interactivity in mass media and computer networks and its relationship to the assessment of news. The 1st wave looked a national probability sample, ahile the 2nd targeted viewers of NBC Nightly News who responded to the show via e-mail. NBC respondents rated mass media to be less interactive, while they rated computer communication more interactive than the national sample. The NBC group also rated mass media news less important and of lower quality than did the national sample. Interactivity ratings did not predict mass media credibility assessment for either group. However, respondents who defined interactivity as cybernetic feedback or who contacted NBC by e-mail rated computer communication to be more credible than thos who did not
