    Abstract
First, the historical development of the IBZ is described. Next, the procedure it uses in choosing the periodicals covered and unique method it employs in indexing journal articles is examined. Then, the IBZ's strengths and weaknesses as a general periodical index are evaluated. And finally, the viability of such bibliographic enterprises as the IBZ is discussed. Throughout the paper the IBZ is compared with other indexes and indexing systems

    Abstract
Explores the relationship between costs and pricing strategies in the publishing of print andelectronic documents, with a view to identifying the cost factors that may influence the viability of electronic documents, in the context of reference and bibliographic databases. Presents an overview of the different approaches that publishers can take to the management of the relationship between pricing, costs and value. Discusses 3 categories of costs associated with the production of electronic and print products: database costs; distribution media costs: and overhead costs. In assessing the viability of electronic publishing it is important to recognize that it is not sufficient to seek to identify whether print or electronic documents are the cheaper to produce, but to consider all costs and to view the elctronic product in its context as part of a publishing portfolio

    Abstract
The effectivity of bibliographic data depends upon clearly defined standards, prompt publication and a range of possible users. The Deutsche Bibiothek has converted data into UNIMARC for national exchange purposes. The keyword standard file of over 260.000 heading and reference forms is available on magnetic tape and microfiche. A central data file on corporate bodies, produced by the Deutsche Bibliotheksinstitut is also available. From 1989 the amount of information in topical index entries may be reduced. Further changes planned include more precise definition of collection guidelines, new operational forms for floppy disc and CD-ROM and selective bibliographic services for particular publication forms and types of library.

    Abstract
Summarises the findings of apilot project at the Austrian Planning centre for Academic Libraries to assess the ÖZDB-Compactsystem on CD-ROM, the first system for serials on CD-ROM to be used in the German speaking countries. The system makes available 47,713 titles from Vienna, Graz, Linz and Salzburg university Libraries locally on an Apple Macintosh computer. The firm was able to provide information about CD-ROM and to supply the hardware for the 6-week project. The whole programme was prepared centrally. It was possible to call up records both by title and by institution responsible, and of the desired degree of specificity. The systems allows the additional advantages option of CD-PAC (Compact Disc Public Access Catalogue) wich can be used in conjunction with the already established BIBOS system.

    Abstract
This article analyzes the role of national bibliographies-with particular reference to the Italian National Bibliography-as relevant tools for national bibliographic control. In the first part of the article, the historical and scientific context of international standards is summarized. The second part describes the role played by the Central National Library of Florence (BNCF) in the realization of the bibliographic control of Italian publications. The limits and the potential of the Italian National Bibliography produced by BNCF are highlighted and compared with the Italian National Library Service (SBN), which is the most important national collective catalog among Italian libraries.

    Abstract
Wilson stated that the work of providing bibliographic services is political in nature because catalogers have to adjudicate amongst the demands made for various forms of control by different communities. Although he did not address the work of the Documentalists directly, his claim is an implicit refutation of their universalist claims. Their efforts were to bring all the world's knowledge together, organize it under a single principle, and make it available to an undifferentiated global community. The concept of "universality" is examined in the context of bibliographic services, looking at claims regarding the collection of knowledge, users, and access.
