    Abstract
    This paper describes the development and content of four Computer Assisted Learning packages designed to teach information skills to higher education students. The areas covered include database searching and library search skills. Educational aspects of using hypertext and hypermedia for learning are discussed along with development issues and a description is given of the staff costs involved. The main source of external funding was the Higher Education Funding Councils' Teaching and Learning Technology Programme

    Abstract
    Internet workshops and other classes involving online tools can be mode more effective through use of presentation graphics software. Such software allows presenters to snapshot and modify screens of computer information. They can then highlight the information paths and techniques they want the audience to be aware of and, during the presentation, can click through the captured screens without having to worry about typing errors or slow response time. Presentation software is ideal for presentations using computer projectors, but can also be helpful in other contexts.     Abstract
    The library at De Montfort University, UK, has an established reputation for user education and support through its academic and subject librarians. Because the new technologies of CD-ROM, online databases and computer networks were being inefficiently used by students, the Student Learning Development Centre developed a brief for a tutorial package that would enable students to develop quality search strategies and skills for electronically sourced information.     Abstract
    Hypertext provides a flexible environment in which to explore information. This makes it suitable for use with instructional software where students can exchange a linear progression for a more individualised exploration of the material. When designing instructional hypertext prgrammes, decisions must be taken on the degree of learner control rather than programme control. Learner control gives to the individual learner a control over the learning strategy; programme control imposes upon the learner, to some degree at least, that strategy. Discusses the arguments for and against learner control of hypertext environments in an instructional context and reviews the research evidence on learner control

    Here is an interactive introduction to neural nets and how to apply them that is easy to understand and use. Neural nets are information processing systems that mimic the basic structure of the human brain. They learn by adjusting the interaction of their individual components (neurons).     Abstract
    Increased learner control is one of the benefits of implementing hypermedia in instructional settings. However, prior research has not determined whether students using hypermedia systems that provide a large amount of learner control actually perceive themselves to be in more control over the learning environment than do student using traditional text-style materials. This is a significant issue because provision of increased control does nothing to help the student unless the student perceives the increased control. Students using hypertext to learn technical information experienced an increased sense of control. Further, it provides preliminary evidence of an increased level of intrinsic motivation to learn among hypertext users. Implications for further research regarding the effects of hypermedia on users' intrinsic motivation are discussed

    When the Glasgow University Teaching with Independent Learning Technologies (TILT) project began in Jan 1993, its main aim was to demonstrate how IT could be successfully incorporated into university teaching within a single institution. 4 years later, TILT has demonstrated its value in many areas, particularly in library and study skills. More than 130 institutions both in the UK and overseas are now using the 5 hypertext information skills modules as a resource in their undergraduate teaching, and detailed evaluations of their effectiveness have been carried out.
