    Classification of office documents is one of the administrative functions carried out by almost every organization and institution which sends and receives correspondence. Processing of this increasing amount of information coming and out going mail, in particular its classification, is time consuming and expensive. More and more organizations are seeking a solution for meeting this challenge by designing computer based systems for automatic classification.     Abstract
    In the 1990s, North American archivists and records managers shifted some of their concern with electronic records and record keeping systems to conducting research about the nature of these records and systems. Describes a research project at Pittsburgh University School of Information Sciences, which considered how electronic records might be managed by the development of recorddkeeping functional requirements. The work was supported with funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Focuses on the project's 4 main products: the functional requirements; metadata specifications for recordkeeping; and the warrant reflecting professional and societal endorsement of the requirements

    Abstract
    Describes the survey of the Scottish Record Office's entire holding of about 21 kilometers of records and the creation of the computerized records location system using Microsoft Access. The process took from Sep 93 to Spring 95. The system is based on 3 interlinked tables which give: room details, containing the number of each room on each floor, in each building; bay details, containing details of the collections in each room; and collection details, containing details of the collections in each bay. Combining data from the tables gives precise information on space use and availabiblity. Explains the use of the tables, describes the graphic display and concludes that the system has provided a valuable tool for the records office

    Abstract
    In the Netherlands the 1st students following the postdoctoral course on integrated document management at Rotterdam's Erasmus University graduated in September 1998. The course lasts for 10 months, including 3 months' practical experience and covers 3 dosciplines: general administration, information management, and archive administration. The aim of the practical experience is to provide students with organisational problems for which they should offer a practical solution. Course leader, Annetsietske Stapel, comments that documentation managers frequently lack funding to put such recommendations into practice, thereby losing long term savings

    Abstract
    Die Betriebswirtschaftslehre als anwendungsbezogene sozialwissenschaftliche Disziplin stellt entscheidungsorientiertes Führungsverhalten in den Mittelpunkt ihrer Erklärungsmodelle. Zunehmend wird erkannt, daß die zur Qualitätssicherung des Leitungshandelns in der Unternehmung als Entscheidungsgrundlage bereitzustellende Information eine systematische Organisation der zugrundeliegenden Wissensbasis voraussetzt. Das Management der Ressource Wissen wird damit zur zentralen Aufgabe des betrieblichen Informationsmanagements. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird das Document Engineering als neue Methode des Dokumentenmanagements diskutiert. ausgehend von den Anforderungen der betrieblichen Dokumentationsfunktion wird aufgezeigt, wie eine aufgabenbezogen strukturierte Wissensbasis der Unternehmung aufgebaut und für alternative Formen der Weiterverarbeitung mit Hilfe automatisierter Verfahren bereitgestellt werden kann. Die entstehenden Dokumentenstrukturen und die darauf operierenden multimedialen Anwendungssysteme können auf strategischer Ebene zum entscheidenden Erfolgsfaktor eines wettbewerbsorientierten Wissensmanagements der Unternehmung werden
