    Abstract
Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions. Catalogue entries for electronic resources need to provide a complete description of the access methodology if they are to satisfactorily connect remote users without the immediate possibility of backup from reference staff

    Abstract
As the publishing of electronic periodicals increases, so does the user demand for access to these publications and librarians are faced with the tasks of selecting, acquiring and providing access to electronic periodicals. suggests that the principles of selection used for materials in other formats should be the foundation for the selection of electronic periodicals as well but selectors must also be aware of the uniqe aspects of these items, such as licensing agreements and hardware or software required to use them. Acquiring and cataloguing electronic periodicals poses challenges in processes that were created to process items housed in physical carriers. cataloguing of these periodicals requires decision making at several different levels, including: choosing the number of records to be used; and the content of those records

    Abstract
Examines several crucial issues involved in the cataloguing of Chinese language remote access electronic periodicals based on the results of a cataloguing experiment at Pittsburgh University Library. Since Chinese language materials consist of the vernacular characters, the problems of reading Chinese text on the computer and dealing with the different Chinese character coding systems used by different electronic publiahers are fully elucidated. As one distinctive feature of chinese electronic periodical cataloguing, the dual effort involved in parallel access points in the records are explained. Discusses the challenges of performing name authority work and providing the information on URLs for the electronic periodicals records. Considers the value that this data might have for future work on cataloguing other non Western languages electronic periodicals

    Abstract
The major cataloguing rules, used in the USA, are discussed in terms of the ways in which they deal with periodicals cataloguing. The rules include Cutter's Rules, the American Library Association's Rules and AACR2. Looks at 2 areas: the entry of periodicals; and what is suggested if the periodical changes its title or the person or corporate body under which it is entered changes.

    Abstract
New users encounter numerous stumbling blocks in their search for periodicals, including use of indexes; understanding the citation; searching the online catalogue for the periodical record; interpreting the periodicals holdings; and finally locating the item on the shelf. Each step presents problems that users bring to the reference desk. Suggests user oriented solutions relating to cataloguing practices, screen design, and linking local holdings to periodical databases. Increased collaboration between librarians and those creating the records and providing the access is essential for meeting end user needs

    Abstract
Analytical references are needed in online library catalogues in order to provide volume specific author and title access to volumes in monographic series that have been catalogues as periodicals. Demonstrates how Oregon Health Science University Library has used the MARC bibliographic format to provide a record consisting almost entirely of indexed access points, in essence, many cross references assembled into one record, all pointing to a serial. Further proposes that AACR2 rules 13.2A and 21.30M1 be extended to prescribe analytical added entries as well as analytical references

    Abstract
Analyses some problems that arise when cataloguing comic book/strip cartoon publications using the USMARC format, suggesting solutions for each of the 4 main forms in which cartoon titles appear - periodical titles; stories within periodicals and serials; serial titles; and albums - in the context of AACR2 interpretations. For genre cataloguing, terminology from an 'open' system such as the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) is preferable to the LCSH. Suggests ways to overcome USMARC's limitations when cataloguing cartoon characters

    Abstract
Form and genre headings are used in the cataloging of archives and manuscripts, audiovisual materials and monographic works of fiction. These headings can also be useful in cataloging serial publications. Form and genre headings can describe the physical format of a serial as well as the point of view or other characteristics relating to what the serial is, rather than what it is about. The headings are particularly useful in the description of "general" periodicals. Catalogers must exercise caution in assigning terms which might "label" the publication as outlined in the American Library Association's Statement on Labeling.

    Abstract
Evaluates current research into bibliographic relationships sparked off by B.B. Tillett's taxonomy of bibliographic relationships (LRTS 35(1991) no.4, S.393-405) and R.P. Smiraglia's taxonomy of the derivative bibliographic relationship (PhD dissertation, Chicago Univ., Graduate Library School, 1992). These researches provide the context for a discussion of recent research and standards work. Reevaluates research on the sequential relationship drawn from work conducted on periodicals and the implications of that research is applied to cataloguing system design. Evaluates the conceptual designs proposed by researchers such as G.H. Leazer and M. Gorman's and uses them in a critique of the USMARC format for bibliographic description

    Abstract
The rapid growth of the Internet has outstripped conventions for citing material from that source. Distinguishing material as a computer file does not provide sufficient information about the platform necessary for reading it. The URL provides useful information, but augmenting it with other details such as author and date not only provides a more meaningful citation, its similarity to conventional bibliographical notation lends a greater degree of legitimacy in academic discourse. Considers information derivable from the URL, and HTML documents (including non displayed source text), in order to derive bibliography and only text citations for various kinds of material and proposes the development of a consistent bibliographic referencing method that emerges from Internet based file formats and overcomes such problems as the lack of specific pagination, long the mainstay of the traditional cataloguer and library user. The conventions proposed are also applicable to Gopher, FTP, Usenet News, periodicals distributed by listservers, and electronic mail

    Abstract
The Bibliothèque Nationale acquires about 45,000 non-French documents in roman script annually; these are cataloged online in the BN-OPALE database. A MARC format, INTERMARC, is used. Standards and format are consistent with international standards (ISBD, AACRZ, UNIMARC) so that conversion and loading of records from a CD-ROM network and from RLIN can be done without difficulty. In 1995 the Bibliothèque Nationale will become the Bibliothèque de France, housing in a new building books, periodicals, and audiovisual and electronic materials; Ule old building will maintain all other items (manuscripts, maps, engravings, coins, printed music, and materials on the prfomung arts). Then another computerized system wilh new abilities will replace the present one; Concerning cataloging, for example, there will be a project for linking bibliographic records to scanned summaries of books and to scanned documents.
