    Abstract
    The idea of obtaining subject access to information by being able to visualize an information space, and to navigate through that space toward useful or interesting information, is attractive and plausible. However, this approach to subject access requires additional cognitive processing associated with the interaction of cognitive facilities that deal with concepts and those that deal with space. This additional cognitive processing may cause problems for users, particularly in dealing with the dimensions, the details, and the symbols of information space. Further, it seems likely that different cognitive abilities are associated with conceptual and spatial cognition. As a result, users who deal well with subject access using traditional conceptual approaches may experience difficulty in using visualization and navigation. An experiment designed to investigate the effects of different cognitive abilities on the use of both conceptual and spatial representations of information is outlined

    Abstract
    The Internet has led to an increase in the quantity and diversity of information available for searching. Furthermore, users are bombarded by a constant barrage of electronic messages in the form of e-mail, faxes, etc. This has led to a plethora of search engines, 'intelligent'agents, etc., that aim to help users in their quest for relevant information, or shield them against irrelevant information. All these systems aim to identify the potentially relevant information in among a large pool of available information. No unifying underlying theory for information discovery systems exist as yet. The aim of this article is to provide a logic-based framework for information discovery, and relate this to the traditional field of information retrieval. Furthermore, the often ignored user receives special emphasis. In information discovery, a good understanding of a user's (sometimes hidden) needs and beliefs is essential. We will develop a logic-based approach to express the mechanics of information discovery, while the pragmatics are based on an analysis of the underlying informational semantics of information carriers and information needs of users

    Abstract
    Throughout history, science has been considered as the engine of modernity, signalling the supremacy of rational thought. The post-modern world, in contrast, is characterised by globalisation engendered by the development of communication technology. In this context, information is a social product and information science has broken from the traditional model of science, abandoning its initial attempt to establish laws and focusing instead on users. This has resulted in interdisciplinary links with related fields such as psychology, communications theory etc. In Brazil development is unequal, with some regions at a post-modern stage and other still feudal or pre-modern. The role of information here is to level these disparities and create a more just society

    Abstract
    Considers the conceptual problems of information and knowledge in the context of 20th century economic theories. Whilst information as a commodity tends to be too complex to be articulated within neoclassical economic models, such models still provide the framework for economic arguments. Of central importance is the idea of the market as a transmitter of information. Keynes' approach advocated government intervention to address the problem of market information failure and to return the economy to equilibrium. Conversely, the philosophical position of the New Right is that state intervention is unnecessary and that an unfettered market, closely tied to a 'spontaneous order' is both a suitable conveyor of information and provides a means for the fficient allocation of resources. Argues that, paradoxically, given the information problems inherent in economic theory, the free market requires an active and interventionist State to operate efficiently

    "Wissen ist mehr als bloße Information. Seit der Karriere des Begriffs Informationsgesellschaft wird dieser Unterschied wieder sehr bewußt. Nur unter ganz bestimmten Umständen kann aufgenommene und verarbeitete Information zu Wissen kondensieren. Diese Umstände sind zu einem Teil von der individuellen Geschichte des Einzelnen abhängig. Zu einem sehr bedeutenden Teil sind sie aber auch von den sozialen Strukturen, kulturellen Umgebungen und somit von den gesellschaftspolitischen Rahmenbedingungen abhängig. Dazu gehören beispielsweise die Arten der Wissensvermittlung in Familie und Schulen, die pädagogischen Methoden, die Hochschulstruktur (Elite- oder Massenuniversität), Lehrpläne und Curricula etc." "Ist die Wissensgesellschaft das Ziel, dann ist auch ein neues, umfassenderes Verständnis von Wissenschaft notwendig. Während in der modernen Wissenschaft "wissenschaftliches" Wissen sehr verkürzt als lediglich "rationales" Faktenwissen wahrgenommen wird, muss die Wissensgesellschaft Wissen in all seinen Formen wahrnehmen. Auch soziale Kompetenz und moralisch-ethisches Wissen stellen Wissen dar. Alle Wissensformen bestimmen gemeinsam den Lebensstil des Einzelnen und befähigen ihn zum Handeln. Der Einzelne wird immer häufiger mit Problemen konfrontiert, deren Lösung es erfordert, dass er flexibel auf verschiedene Wissensformen zurückgreifen kann.     Abstract
    Strategies for knowledge utilization in the health and social service fields have many conceptual linkages with the field of information science. Knowledge utilization involves interventiona aimed at increasing the use of knowledge to solve human problems. A review of definitions of various subfields included under this term is followed by a discussion of the historical evolution of knowledge utilization concepts and practices. Basic principles and strategies are presented, along with key issues confronting the field for the 1990s. Areas of current and future interaction with information science also are discussed
