    Abstract
Community networks have existed since the 1970s when Community Memory in Berkeley, Californis, installed terminals in public places for people to read and post material of all sorts on a centralised time sharing system. Community Memory was the first known community access network. Several foundations and government agencies have funded community networks, known as freenets. Discusses the freenet movement; library involvement; the Apple Library of Tomorrow and the Morino Foundation conference on community networks and how to keep in touch with community network developments

    Abstract
Reports on the Southern California Online Users Group annual workshop, which broke all previous attendance records. The topic was 'Radical redesign of reference and research', and common threads among speakers included the need for a new reference/research model that will scale with future needs, and the now common standard of round the clock service availability. Print could become a secondary medium to digital data, primarily delivered over the Internet, and that information vendors be forced to change pricing structures. Librarians from public, corporate, and academic sectors have begun building Web sites around links to their own data and to other quality sites as a means of providing 24 hour services. Vendors might consider creating new price comparison services, or offering proce guarantees, to compete with this new phenomenon

By examining the unique combination of skills the librarian acquires, both through on the job training and through a graduate educational programme, it is found that librarians can play an essential role in working with evolving information technologies. Touches upon one librarian's career from the traditional beginning of working in a library as a library assistant to working as a service provider for libraries. Then illustrates how those skills were used to obtain a position in the home user Internet industry

    Abstract
Taking a step beyond Meta search engines which require Web site evaluation skills and a knowledge of how to construct effective search statements, we encounter the concept of a seamless, Web-based library. These are electronic libraries created by information professionals, Meta sites for the 21st Century. Here is a place where average people with average Internet skills can find significant Web sites arranged under a hierarchy of subject categories. Having observed client behavior in a university library setting for a quarter of a century, it is apparent that the extent to which information is used has always been determined by content applicable to user needs, an easy-to-understand design, and high visibility. These same elements have determined the extent to which Internet Quick Reference (IQR), a seamless, Web-based library at cc.usu.edu/-stewei/hot.htm. has been used

    Abstract
Usenet is one of the most widely used services on the Internet. Recently, a handful of articles dealing with the mechanisms and personal use of Usenet have appeared in the library literature, but little attention has focused on Usenet as a reference tool. This is unfortunate since with Usenet we have the ability to query the knowledge of a large well educated population on just about any subject and receive responeses often within hours. provides a brief introduction to Usenet and how it can be used for reference work, plus a guide to some of the issues involved with posting reference questions to Usenet. Offers examples of reference questions answered using Usenet as a source

    Abstract
Although at first sight the WWW appears to have the potential for making printed reference sources obsolete, a systematic study of 104 reference questions, at the West Virginia Library Commission, demonstrated that, although the WWW is a powerful source of information, at the present time it is not a source that will answer a majority of reference questions. The WWW is strong in some categories of referenc equestions and weak in others. Time spent searching the WWW is another factor that must be taken into consideration by reference librarians. Concludes that it is not a wise decision to discard a reference book that will answer a question in 5 minutes when it will take 20 minutes to find the answer on the Web

    Abstract
In a reassessment of Internet usage for reference purposes, data are tabulated from a 1995 class in advanced electronic searching and compared with a previous study from fall 1994. The current data are from 195 searches initiated by students assigned questions on a series of topics: science and technology, medicine and biology, social sciences, arts and humanities, current events, business, legal and government information. The Internet was selected as a viable source 58% of the time and determined to be successful in 86% of theses searches. Although both the selection and success rates differ with the topic being searched and the individual searchers, there is a considerable increase in both Internet selection and success rates from those of the previous year
