    Abstract
    Der erste WiNShuttle-Zugang zum Wissenschaftsnetz wurde im Dezember 1995 in der StB Stuttgart geschaltet. Seitdem stehen den Besuchern der StB Computer mit ZUgang zum Internet zur Verfügung. Einführungen und Veranstaltungen zum Thema ergänzen das Angebot. Mit WiNShuttle wird es öffentlichen Bibliotheken möglich, ihr traditionelle Informationsangebot mit digitalen Informationen 'aus dem Netz' zu ergänzen.     Abstract
    Reports on the Southern California Online Users Group annual workshop, which broke all previous attendance records. The topic was 'Radical redesign of reference and research', and common threads among speakers included the need for a new reference/research model that will scale with future needs, and the now common standard of round the clock service availability. Print could become a secondary medium to digital data, primarily delivered over the Internet, and that information vendors be forced to change pricing structures. Librarians from public, corporate, and academic sectors have begun building Web sites around links to their own data and to other quality sites as a means of providing 24 hour services. Vendors might consider creating new price comparison services, or offering proce guarantees, to compete with this new phenomenon

    Abstract
    Im Vergleich mit der konventionellen Bibliothek stellt der Autor schrittweise die Recherchemöglichkeiten in der virtuellen Bibliothek Internet vor. Dabei werden detailliert Methoden und Strategien zur Informationsgewinnung zunächst beschrieben und anschließend mit Anwendungsaufgaben eingeübt. Die wichtigsten so vorgestellten Bereiche: Kataloge und Suchmaschinen, Diskussionforen, elektronische Nachschlagewerke. Auf die PC-gerechte Weiterverarbeitung der aus dem Internet gewonnenen Daten ('gepackte' Dateien, Texte, Filme, Bilder, Tondokumente) wird ebenfalls eingegangen.     Abstract
    Auf dem Weg in die globale Informationsgesellschaft werden öffentliche Bibliotheken ihre Dienstleistungen entsprechend modifizieren müssen. In dieser Arbeit wird deshalb zunächst die Rolle öffentlicher Bibliotheken in der Informationsgesellschaft diskutiert, die sich daraus ergebenden neuen Aufgabenbereiche der Bibliotheken, Applikationsfelder des Internet in der bibliothekarischen Praxis, sowie Probleme des Einsatzes von Internet in öffentlichen Bibliotheken besprochen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird die Studie des Project GAIN vorgestellt, um Erfahrungswerte öffentlicher Bibliotheken zur Installation eines Internet-Anschlusses und der Integration des Internet in deren Service vorzulegen. Die Helsinki City Library und die Internet Public Library liefern außerdem Beispiele einer kreativen Umsetzung tradtioneller Dienstleistungen öffentlicher Bibliotheken in Internet-Serviceleistungen.     Explores issues surrounding the provision of online services and electronic resources in US public libraries, and discusses the appropriate directions for public libraries to pursue. Investigates traditional online reference tools, CD-ROM databases, OPACs, community bulletin boards and access to information resources via the Internet. Discusses national versus local library goals, strategies for online services, and consequences for service and cost controls. Considers the role of public libraries within NII.
