    Abstract
    Describes the development, funding and staffing of the Information Literacy Program (ILP) at the Mantor Library at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). The programme aims at helping both UMF students and community patrons to understand better how and where to look for information. Instruction takes place in an electronic classroom equipped with 21 computers running campus-standard Web-browsers and word processing; the instructor's station can control all of the computers in the classroom, or the instructor may pass or share control with students. Discusses issues relating to campus politics, the positioning of the programme in the college experience, the necessity of teaching evaluation skills, and the programme's impact on reference services. gives advice to other libraries considering a similar project

    Abstract
    Kanadische Kolleginnen haben eine Evaluierungsmethode entwickelt, mit welcher die Qualität des Auskunftsdienstes komplexer beurteilt werden kann als bisher und die darüberhinaus konkrete Hinweise gibt, wie der Auskunftsdienst verbessert werden könnte. Hierbei werden die Methoden Test und verdeckte Beobachtung kombiniert. Kriterium für die Beurteilung des Qualität des Auskunftsdienstes ist nicht die Zahl der richtig beantworteten Fragen, sondern die Zufriedenheit der Benutzer, und die hängt mehr als man erwarten könnte, von der Qualität der Interaktion im Auskunftsdienst ab. Diese kanadischen Erfahrungen wurden bei einer entsprechenden Evaluierung im Stuttgarter Raum bestätigt, die von Studierenden der HBI Stuttgart durchgeführt wurde. In weniger als 50% der Testfälle kam es zu einer nützlichen bzw. zufriedenstellenden Antwort. Dabei spielten mangelnde kommunikative Kompetenz und die fehlende Interviewkompetenz eine besonders große Rolle

    While reference librarianship is an exciting profession, some librarians become disillusioned and acquire negative attitudes toward the profession, library education, the professional literature, and their clients. Reference practitioners should consider formal teaching of the of their discipline in order to better come to terms with their profession.     Als experimentelles Förderprogramm des BMFT zielte der Modellversuch Informationsvermittlung darauf ab, die Nutzung von Online-Datenbankinformationen in unterschiedlichen institutionellen Bereichen anzuregen, zu erproben und zu intensivieren. Der Beitrag geht auf den besonderen Charakter des dem Modellversuch zugrundeliegenden Förderkonzepts ein, erläutert das Design der flankierenden Unterstützungsmaßnahmen und wissenschaftlichen Analysen und umreißt die Methoden der begleitenden Datenerhebung und -auswertung.     Abstract
    Die Arbeit zeigt Möglichkeiten, Angebote und Erfahrungen eines CD-ROM Einsatzes im Auskunftsdienst Öffentlicher Bibliotheken auf. Es wird deutlich gemacht, welche Möglichkeiten die Anwendung von CD-ROM zur Verbesserung des Dienstleistungsangebotes Öffentlicher Bibliotheken bietet; wie CD-ROM in Bibliotheken unterschiedlicher Funktionsstufen und Konzeptionen eingebunden werden kann und mit welchen organisatorischen und finanziellen Konsequenzen hierbei zu rechnen ist. Hilfen zur Marktsichtung und Auswahl werden vorgestellt und besprochen; Beurteilungskriterien für CD-ROM Datenbanken aufgestellt und die für Öffentliche Bibliotheken bedeutenden rechtlichen Grundsätze erläutert. Ein ausführliches CD-ROM Auswahlverzeichnis stellt die für Öffentliche Bibliotheken interessanten CD-ROM Produkte vor.
