    Abstract
    Der Einsatz von Online-Datenbanken für interne Arbeiten wie Erwerbung, Katalogisierung, Leihverkehr und Ausleihverbuchuing ist in den Public Libraries der USA mittlerweile Standard. Die externe Nutzung von Online-Datenbanken für den Reference Service dagegen beschränkte sich bis vor kurzem auf mittelgroße und große Public Libraries, doch können durch die Schaffung von Verbünden neuerdings auch kleinere Public Libraries ihren Benutzern diesen Service anbieten. Die <Handhabungspraxis, die oft im krassen Gegensatz zur Theorie steht, und die Qualität des Online Reference Service sind von Bibliothek zu Bibliothek recht unterschiedlich. Belebendes Element in einem stagnierenden Online-Markt ist die Tatsache, daß mehr und mehr Bibliotheken dazu übergehen, eigene Datenbanken zu produzieren.     Abstract
    Im Jahr 1993 startete das Projekt InfoBase an der Universität Freiburg als Kooperationsprojekt zwischen dem Rechenzentrum und der UB. In einer guten Zusammenarbeit zwischen diesen beiden zentralen Einrichtungen konnte das Projektteam bisher sehr erfolgreich die Versorgung der Universität mit elektronischer Fachinformation über das Datennetz organisieren. Dank des hohen Engagements - auch in finanzieller Hinsicht - von RZ und UB verfügt die Universität Freiburg heute über ein hervorragendes Werkzeug zur elektronischen Informationsversorgung. Erste Projekte für landesweite Angebote zeigen, daß Kooperationen mehrerer Einrichtungen im Land Vorteile für alle Beteiligten mit sich bringen, wenn sich auch heute noch die Begeisterung der lizenzgebenden Datenbankhersteller und Anbieter in deutlichen Grenzen hält. In der zweiten Hälfte des Jahres 1996 soll veruscht werden, das bisherige Angebot bibliographischer Datendienste mit Volltextdatenbanken zu ergänzen. Daß dies auch alles von den Benutzern so gewollt ist und angenommen wird, zeigen Nutzungsstatistiken und eine im Jahr 1995 durchgeführte Nutzerbefragung

    Abstract
    Kanadische Kolleginnen haben eine Evaluierungsmethode entwickelt, mit welcher die Qualität des Auskunftsdienstes komplexer beurteilt werden kann als bisher und die darüberhinaus konkrete Hinweise gibt, wie der Auskunftsdienst verbessert werden könnte. Hierbei werden die Methoden Test und verdeckte Beobachtung kombiniert. Kriterium für die Beurteilung des Qualität des Auskunftsdienstes ist nicht die Zahl der richtig beantworteten Fragen, sondern die Zufriedenheit der Benutzer, und die hängt mehr als man erwarten könnte, von der Qualität der Interaktion im Auskunftsdienst ab. Diese kanadischen Erfahrungen wurden bei einer entsprechenden Evaluierung im Stuttgarter Raum bestätigt, die von Studierenden der HBI Stuttgart durchgeführt wurde.     Für Informationsvermittlungsstellen wird der Nachweis ihres Nutzens und einer wirtschaftlichen Arbeitsweise immer bedeutender. Controlling liefert wertvolle Instrumente hierfür. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt die Schwierigkeiten, die in Zusammenhang mit der Leistungsmessung von Informationsdienstleistungen auftreten: Probleme, welche sich durch die besondere 'Beschaffenheit' des Faktors Information ergeben und solche, die durch das Umfeld IVS bedingt sind. Es werden die Nutzenkomponenten der Ressource Information herausgearbeitet.     An 2 biowissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen der Grundlagenforschung, dem Max-Delbrück-Centrum für Molekulare Medizin, Berlin-Buch und dem Leibniz-Institut für Neurobiologie, Magdeburg, wurden 1997 bzw. 1998 Nutzerbefragungen durchgeführt. Obwohl die untersuchten Gruppen beträchtliche Altersunterschiede aufwiesen, ergeben sich einheitliche Trends: für etwa 2/3 der Wissenschaftler ist gegenwärtig die Nutzung von Printmedien und elektronischen Informationsofferten gleichwertig, während etwa 15% der Befragten letzteren den Vorzug geben. Bei der Datenbanknutzung ist festzustellen, daß MEDLINE die überragende Position sowohl bei der CD-ROM als auch Online im Internet einnimmt

    Abstract
    Die Digitale Bibliothek hat viele Gesichter und viele Funktionen, Kein des Begriffs ist die Aufbereitung, Zugänglichkeit und Verarbeitung von digitalen - aber auch nichtdigitalen - Quellen. Das Management von elektronischen Informationsressourcen birgt neue Strukturen, neue Paradigmen, neue Arbeitsweisen und neue Informationsvermittlungsmethoden. Noch einer Übersicht über die Begriffsbestimmung "Digitale Bibliothek" werden die Forschungsprogramme und Förderansätze hinsichtlich digitaler Bibliotheksprojekte in den USA, Europa, Asien und Ozeanien dargestellt. Einzelne Aspekte der digitalen Bibliothek werden dann näher erläutert wie die Architektur der digitalen Bibliothek, Metadaten, Dokumentenerstellung, Interoperability, Gateways - Clearinghouses etc., Paradigmenverschiebung, elektronische Zeitschriften, Informationsvermittlung, Abrechungsmodalitäten, Archivierung etc. Weiterhin wird überlegt, was die künftigen Implikationen der Informationseuphorie bzw des "dato smog" sind, wie der Wissenschaftlerarbeitsplatz aussieht und weiche Rolle Bibliothek und Bibliothekare in der Informationsversorgung künftig haben

    Abstract
    Was wünschen die Kunden einer Bibliothek, an ihnen zur Verfügung gestellten Arbeitsplätzen vorzufinden? Wie kann eine Bibliothek ihre Benutzer zufried stellen? Der Kunde wünscht, ein Maximum an Information aus der Bibliothek mitzunehmen. Zunächst einmal ist zu klären, welche Art von Information vom Benutzer gewünscht wird. Daraufhin ist zu lösen, wie Informationen optimal aufbereitet sein sollten. Das Ergebnis ist der multifunktionale Benutzerarbeitsplatz. In der Praxis bedeutet das, alle zur Zeit verfügbaren elektronischen Bibliotheksangebote unter einer grafischen Arbeitsoberfläche anzubieten. Die grafische Oberfläche ermöglicht es dem Benutzer, parallel in verschiedenen Anwendungen zu arbeiten. Die Auskunft gebenden Bibliothekare/innen stehen vor der Anforderung, alle Anwendungen selbst bedienen zu können. Dazu ist ein umfangreicher Know-How-Transfer zwischen EDV-Leuten und Bibliothekaren/innen erforderlich. Neue Strukturen innerhalb der Bibliothek sind die Folge.     Abstract
    Die Arbeit zeigt Möglichkeiten, Angebote und Erfahrungen eines CD-ROM Einsatzes im Auskunftsdienst Öffentlicher Bibliotheken auf. Es wird deutlich gemacht, welche Möglichkeiten die Anwendung von CD-ROM zur Verbesserung des Dienstleistungsangebotes Öffentlicher Bibliotheken bietet; wie CD-ROM in Bibliotheken unterschiedlicher Funktionsstufen und Konzeptionen eingebunden werden kann und mit welchen organisatorischen und finanziellen Konsequenzen hierbei zu rechnen ist. Hilfen zur Marktsichtung und Auswahl werden vorgestellt und besprochen; Beurteilungskriterien für CD-ROM Datenbanken aufgestellt und die für Öffentliche Bibliotheken bedeutenden rechtlichen Grundsätze erläutert. Ein ausführliches CD-ROM Auswahlverzeichnis stellt die für Öffentliche Bibliotheken interessanten CD-ROM Produkte vor. Darüberhinaus werden die Themen Öffentlichkeitsarbeit sowie Betreuungs- und Schulungsaufwand aufgegriffen und die technischen Möglichekiten der Präsentation vorgestellt

    Abstract
    Moderne Methoden des Qualitätsmanagements wurden bisher vor allem im industriellen Bereich entwickelt und praktiziert. Im Dienstleistungssektor stehen vergleichbare Konzepte erst am beginn ihrer praktischen Erprobung. Bei Produktion und Vertrieb verschiedener Arten von Informationsdiensten (in Verlagen, Fachinformationszentren, Bibliotheken, innerbetrieblichen Informationseinrichtungen usw.) liegen erste Erfahrungen seit kurzem vor allem aus Ländern des englischen Sprachraumes vor. Dieser Artikel untersucht vor allem zwei Fragen: Worin läßt sich der praktische Nutzen eines modernen Qualitätsmanagements generell sehen, und was sind die besonderen Schwierigkeiten eines umfassenden Qualitätsmanagements für Informationsdienste?

    Abstract
    Die folgenden Ausführungen befassen sich mit der Beantwortung der Frage, welche Kenntnisse, Fertigkeiten und Fähigkeiten von an Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen tätigen Fachkräften zukünftig erwartet werden müssen. Hierbei konzentrieren sich die Ausführungen im wesentlichen auf den Bereich von Firmenbibliotheken, doch ist sicherlich auch eine Übertragung auf Spezialbibliotheken im allgemeinen denkbar
