    Abstract
Telephone reference service at the California Univ. at San Diego Central Library hab become problematic in recent years due to increased volume of patron demand, both in person and on the telephone. In order to meet the demand the library established a separate information desk service which became the first line of service for incoming telephone callers. Reports a survey conducted in 1991 by information and reference desk staff to see how well this arrangement was meeting the needs of primary patrons. Details steps taken to correct shortcomings

    Abstract
Describes a reference service using electronic mail that has been offered at Indiana Univ. in Bloomington since 1987 as part of the libraries' component of an electronic academic information environment. Reports results of a survey conducted to obtain a better understanding of the experience, to identify the clientele, and to consider improvements and modifications. Discusses useful observations and principles that can be drawn from the experience which may be useful to other libraries

    Abstract
Reports the Library Solutions Institute 'Rethinking reference: new models and how to get there' at the University of California Berkeley from 12-14 Mar 93. Given concern that the traditional model of reference service is no longer relevant, librarians describe strategies used in their institutions many of which have information desks staffed by graduate students with reference service offered on an appointment basis by librarians. Lists changes to reference service envisaged for the future

    Abstract
Reports the hearing on libraries and their role in the information infrastructure held by the Senate Subcommittee on Education, Arts and Humanities on 19 Apr 1994 and timed to coincide with National Library Week and Legislative Day. Contributions highlighted the degree to which library services in libraries throughout the USA are enhanced by electronic data transmission and the urgent need on the part of libraries for support from federal government with funding their policies

    Abstract
From 1978 to 1990 the College of Engineering, Michigan University, offered a course: 'Technical Communications: Information Resources for Engineers' to students working on research projects. Reports results of a 1993 follow up study, to assess the impact of the course. The study also revealed that many engineers have access to the tools needed for electronic information retrieval, and that while few receive formal training in their use, there is widespread interest in learning more

    Abstract
42 academic libraries in New Jersey were surveyed in 1994 to investigate the use of the Internet for reference work. 27 responses were received. The survey questions focused on: how many reference librarians used the Internet for reference queries, what training they had received, what types of reference activities were being conducted, how successful the searches were, what subject categories were searched, and what were the problems/barriers that prevented more frequent use. Reports the results and indicates possible solutions to problems

    Abstract
The University of the West of England (UWE) Library Science comprises 4 campus libraries spread across Bristol. It has gradually developed network services and access to JANET and the Internet for the libraries at all campuses but has only recently had access to Netscape. Reports 2 case studies conducted by UWE librarians on using the Internet for Fine Art Print resources and using JANET/Internet resources to support mathematics highlighting some common thoughts and issues surrounding the Internet

    Abstract
Reports on the findings of a survey made by the United Kingdom Office of Library Networking (UKOLN) on the use of the Internet in public libraries. Questionnaires were sent to all library authorities and there was a 100% response. The results indicate that 53% of all public library authorities in the UK had some form of Internet connection, but only 0,4% of these service points gave the public free access. Other areas investigated include numbers of dedicated workstations, how they are connected, use made of the service, and the types of information services being accessed
