    Abstract
    The implementation of end user local area networks (LANs) for CD-ROMs has irrevocably altered the nature and depth of end user public services. A number of service related issues have arisen as significant factors in the planning and implementation of CD-ROM LANs, including: education and training of both users and library staff; and users' perceptions of and satisfaction with the CD-ROM LAN. Focuses on these concerns from the perspective of the reference department's first year experiences with the operation of the CD-ROM LAN in the Joan and Donald Axinn Library, Hofstra University, Long Island. Reports the results of a survey of users' perceptions of and attitudes towards a variety of issues concerning their use of the CD-ROM LAN

    Abstract
    Discusses the compatibility of CD-ROM databases and local area networks with notes on: troubleshooting, daily maintenance, CD-ROM databses versus traditional printed services, user training, and the burnout and stress which library staff face. In light of tightening budgets and limited space, LANs are challenging traditional book and periodical budgets, and placing new demands on available library resources and space.

    Abstract
    At the start of the academic year reference staff are hard pressed to provide sufficient assistance to first time users of CD-ROMs, who have missed bibliographic instruction classes, or who need more guidance before searching. The literature on CD-ROMs was reviewed, and a survey conducted to estimate the training needs of searchers. It was found that 100% of the inexperienced searchers required assistance while searching, and 50% of their search strategies were later rated as poor. More than half the experienced searchers also needed the librarians assistance, and 31% of this group demonstrated a poor understanding of searching techniques. The survey findings were incorporated into CDIntro, a computer assisted learning package designed by the authors

    Abstract
    Die Stadtbibliotheken Köln und Bremen haben zusammen mit der Bremer Universität im Rahmen eines vom BMWF durchgeführten Projekts die 'infoThek' zur Bereitstellung elektronischer Medien in Bibliotheken entwickelt. Mittels einer grafisch orientierten Bildschirmoberfläche ermöglicht das System einen menügesteuerten benutzerfreundlichen Zugang zu digital gespeicherten Informationssammlungen. Das auf der Basis von Toolbook entwickelte Informationssystem ermöglicht nicht nur die Einbindung von elektronischen Büchern bzw. CD-ROM-Anwendungen, sondern auch die Bereitstellung von Stadtinformationen, die von lokalen Anbietern in elektronischer Form bezogen werden können. Das System führt eine Anzahl unterschiedlicher Anwendungen in übersichtlichen Menüs zusammen, so daß der Bibliotheksbenutzer einfach und schnell einen Überblick über das vorhandenen Informationsangebot erhält

    Abstract
    Presents a study to assist reference librarians/bibliographers in the selection of electronic formats of indexes and abstracts. It incorporated input from both general and experts users in a comparison of CD-ROM and Internet versions of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA). The results indicate that CD-ROM technology, in spite of its user-friendliness, has limitations. The Internet version of ASFA has more current records, offers more comprehensive coverage of the ASFA databases, and allows unlimited remote access by faculty, staff, and students. Limitations of the Internet version include speed of access, search engine inadequacies, and the need for a more extensive training programme
