    Abstract
Describes how the results of 2 studies of the way reference librarians work were pooled to provide an understanding of the important features necessary in software that function as intelligent agents and expert systems for computerized reference work. Discusses the functioning of intelligent software agents in terms of: communication with users; technical competence in searching (designing and performing searches); personalization in terms of formulating the search interview, refining the results of searches, and tailoring the search interview, refining the results of searches, and tailoring the search to the particular user's needs. Sets out 9 design principles for intelligent agents and practical technical implications of the studies

    Abstract
The present essay is based on research funded by the German Ministry of Economics and Technology and carried out by the Munich School of Philosophy (Prof. Godehard Brüntrup) in cooperation with the IT company Comelio GmbH. It is concerned with setting up the philosophical framework for a systematic, hierarchical and categorical account of questions and answers in order to use this framework as an ontology for software engineers who create a tool for intelligent questionnaire design. In recent years, there has been considerable interest in programming software that enables users to create and carry out their own surveys. Considering the, to say the least, vast amount of areas of applications these software tools try to cover, it is surprising that most of the existing tools lack a systematic approach to what questions and answers really are and in what kind of systematic hierarchical relations different types of questions stand to each other. The theoretical background to this essay is inspired Barry Smith's theory of regional ontologies. The notion of ontology used in this essay can be defined by the following characteristics: (1) The basic notions of the ontology should be defined in a manner that excludes equivocations of any kind. They should also be presented in a way that allows for an easy translation into a semi-formal language, in order to secure easy applicability for software engineers. (2) The hierarchical structure of the ontology should be that of an arbor porphyriana.

    Abstract
The University Libraries of the Univ. of Houston created an experimental Intelligent Reference Information System (IRIS) over a two-year period. A ten-workstation CD-ROM LAN was implemented that provided access to 19 citiation, full-text, graphic, and numeric databases. An experts system, Reference Expert, was developed to assist users in selecting appropriate printed and electronic reference sources. This expert system was made available on both network and stand-alone workstations. Three research studies were conducted

    Abstract
Exploring the advantages of a simulation (rather than expert systems) approach to designing a system to relieve reference desk overload. REFSIM can simulate a reference librarian, a teacher of reference librarians and a client, singly or in combination. It has an expert system consultation mode and several Intelligent Computer-Assisted Instruction (ICAI) modes. The components and architecture of REFSIM are described. Details, including a sample transaction, are given for the expert system mode, wich is to be used for consultation by library clients. An overview is supplied for 2 ICAI modes, wich can be used to instruct clients or train reference librarians.

    Abstract
Research on the use of online catalogues reveals that information retrieval by subject is the most common form, but the least successful. Most problems are attributed to users' search terms, which are either to broad or too specific. Presents an Intelligent Negotiating Neural Network (INN) design model for solving this aspect of online catalogues. The network is designed to act as as electronic information specialist capable of learning to negotiate a user's query and translate it into a true, well formulate statement prior to accessing an online catalogue. The network's architecture includes 4 dimensions: conceptual graphs for queries, inheritance and recognition, knowledge base, and modules. This architecture corresponds to four elements of the traditional query negotiation interview performed by information specialists. These are: query/concept; types of sources/answer-providing tools; types of literature; and time frame. 3 different sessions of the user interface are presented: negotiation of a broadly stae query; negotiation of a norrowly stae query; and negotiation of a query for which concepts are nonexistent in the knowledge base

    Abstract
In the past, librarians were the 'information chauffeurs' who, when requested, performed mediated searches and pointed the client towards various information resources. The advent of information utilities and newly developed technologies such as intelligent agents, the Internet, and America Online enable customers to obtain information on their own and are thus challenging librarians to define their core services and roles. Looks at reference services and their growing significance

    Abstract
Extension of earlier studies of the way reference librarians work were pooled to provide an understanding of the important features necessary in software that function as intelligent agents and expert systems for computerized reference work. Presents the technical implications of these studies as a set of 9 design principles for agent technology and discusses only the technical issues that were specifically raised by the studies of librarians and users
