    Abstract
    The work we are presenting is devoted to the information collected on the WWW. By the term collected we mean the whole process of retrieving, extracting and presenting results to the user. This research is part of the RAP (Research, Analyze, Propose) project in which we propose to combine two methods: (i) query reformulation using linguistic markers according to a given point of view; and (ii) text semantic analysis by means of contextual exploration results (Descles, 1991). The general project architecture describing the interactions between the users, the RAP system and the WWW search engines is presented in Nait-Baha et al. (1998). We will focus this paper on showing how we use linguistic markers to reformulate the queries according to a given point of view

    Abstract
    Creates an open, metadata aware system for distributed, collaborative WWW indexing. The system has 3 main components: a harvester (for collecting information), a database (for making the collection searchable), and a user interface (for making the information available). all components can be distributed across networked computers, thus supporting scalability. The system is metadata aware and thus allows searches on several fields including title, document author and URL. Nordic Web Index (NWI) is an application using this system to create a regional Nordic Web-indexing service. NWI is built using 5 collaborating service points within the Nordic countries. The NWI databases can be used to build additional services

    Abstract
    Surfing the World Wide Web used to be cool, dude, real cool. But things have gotten hot - so hot that finding something useful an the Web is no longer cool. It is suffocating Web searchers in the smoke and debris of mountain-sized lists of hits, decisions about which search engines they should use, whether they will get lost in the dizzying maze of a subject directory, use the right syntax for the search engine at hand, enter keywords that are likely to retrieve hits an the topics they have in mind, or enlist a browser that has sufficient functionality to display the most promising hits. When it comes to Web searching, in a few short years we have gone from the cool image of surfing the Web into the frying pan of searching the Web. We can turn down the heat by rethinking what Web searchers are doing and introduce some order into the chaos. Web search strategies that are tool-based-oriented to specific Web searching tools such as search en gines, subject directories, and meta search engines-have been widely promoted, and these strategies are just not working. It is time to dissect what Web searching tools expect from searchers and adjust our search strategies to these new tools. This discussion offers Web searchers help in the form of search strategies that are based an strategies that librarians have been using for a long time to search commercial information retrieval systems like Dialog, NEXIS, Wilsonline, FirstSearch, and Data-Star.

    Evaluates the performance of 8 major Internet search engines in answering 21 real reference questions and 5 made up subject questions. Reports on the retrieval and relevancy ranking abilities of the search engines. Concludes that the search engines did not produce good results for the reference questions unlike for the subject questions.     Abstract
    The unprecedented growth of the Internet has given rise to the Dark Web, the problematic facet of the Web associated with cybercrime, hate, and extremism. Despite the need for tools to collect and analyze Dark Web forums, the covert nature of this part of the Internet makes traditional Web crawling techniques insufficient for capturing such content. In this study, we propose a novel crawling system designed to collect Dark Web forum content. The system uses a human-assisted accessibility approach to gain access to Dark Web forums. Several URL ordering features and techniques enable efficient extraction of forum postings. The system also includes an incremental crawler coupled with a recall-improvement mechanism intended to facilitate enhanced retrieval and updating of collected content. Experiments conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the human-assisted accessibility approach and the recall-improvement-based, incremental-update procedure yielded favorable results. The human-assisted approach significantly improved access to Dark Web forums while the incremental crawler with recall improvement also outperformed standard periodic- and incremental-update approaches. Using the system, we were able to collect over 100 Dark Web forums from three regions. A case study encompassing link and content analysis of collected forums was used to illustrate the value and importance of gathering and analyzing content from such online communities.

    Abstract
    Because of the increasing presence of scientific publications an the Web, combined with the existing difficulties in easily verifying and retrieving these publications, research an techniques and methods for retrieval of scientific Web publications is called for. In this article, we report an the initial steps taken toward the construction of a test collection of scientific Web publications within the subject domain of plant biology. The steps reported are those of data gathering and data analysis aiming at identifying characteristics of scientific Web publications. The data used in this article were generated based an specifically selected domain topics that are searched for in three publicly accessible search engines (Google, AlITheWeb, and AItaVista). A sample of the retrieved hits was analyzed with regard to how various publication attributes correlated with the scientific quality of the content and whether this information could be employed to harvest, filter, and rank Web publications. The attributes analyzed were inlinks, outlinks, bibliographic references, file format, language, search engine overlap, structural position (according to site structure), and the occurrence of various types of metadata. As could be expected, the ranked output differs between the three search engines. Apparently, this is caused by differences in ranking algorithms rather than the databases themselves. In fact, because scientific Web content in this subject domain receives few inlinks, both AItaVista and AlITheWeb retrieved a higher degree of accessible scientific content than Google. Because of the search engine cutoffs of accessible URLs, the feasibility of using search engine output for Web content analysis is also discussed.

    Abstract
    The Internet can be a valuable tool allowing distance learners to access information not available locally. Search engines are the most common means of locating relevant information an the Internet, but to use them efficiently students should be taught the basics of searching and how to evaluate the results. This article briefly reviews how Search engines work, studies comparing Search engines, and criteria useful in evaluating the quality of returned Web pages. Research indicates there are statistical differences in the precision of Search engines, with AltaVista ranking high in several studies. When evaluating the quality of Web pages, standard criteria used in evaluating print resources is appropriate, as well as additional criteria which relate to the Web site itself. Giving distance learners training in how to use Search engines and how to evaluate the results will allow them to access relevant information efficiently while ensuring that it is of adequate quality.

    Abstract
    Purpose - This article is an edited version of a report commissioned by the British Library and JISC to identify how the specialist researchers of the future (those born after 1993) are likely to access and interact with digital resources in five to ten years' time. The purpose is to investigate the impact of digital transition on the information behaviour of the Google Generation and to guide library and information services to anticipate and react to any new or emerging behaviours in the most effective way. Design/methodology/approach - The study was virtually longitudinal and is based on a number of extensive reviews of related literature, survey data mining and a deep log analysis of a British Library and a JISC web site intended for younger people. Findings - The study shows that much of the impact of ICTs on the young has been overestimated. The study claims that although young people demonstrate an apparent ease and familiarity with computers, they rely heavily on search engines, view rather than read and do not possess the critical and analytical skills to assess the information that they find on the web. Originality/value - The paper reports on a study that overturns the common assumption that the "Google generation" is the most web-literate.

    Mit über 1100 Delegierten und 85 Ausstellern stellte die zwölfte Information Online auch 2005 wieder die im Raum Asien und Pazifik größte und renommierteste regionale Fachmesse für den Informationsbereich dar. Alle zwei Jahre veranstaltet der australische Informationsberufe-Verband ALIA in Sydney die Tagung mit Fachreferenten aus Australien, Asien, Europa und USA. An drei bis fünf Tagen kommen hier Bibliothekare und Informationsspezialisten aus Australien und Neuseeland, Indien, Malaysien, Amerika, und Europa zusammen, um sich anhand von Vorträgen, Workshops, einer Fachausstellung und reichlich Gelegenheiten für informelles Networking einen Überblick über den sich rasant entwickelnden Markt des elektronischen Informationsmanagement und der Informationsversorgung zu verschaffen. 60 Referenten und neun Hauptredner (Angela Abell, Kate Andrews, Liesle Capper, Peter Crowe, Prof. Brian Fitzgerald, David Hawking, Mary Lee Kennedy, Hemant Manohar, Joan Frye Williams) lieferten Forschungsergebnisse, Fallstudien, Fortschrifttsberichte und programmatische Thesen aus den Themenbereichen Informationsarchitektur, Online Archive, Content Management Systeme, Urheberrecht und WWW, Web Services für Bibliotheken und Informationsstellen, Benutzungsschemata für Web-Technologien, Schnittstellen, Datenpool, Bibliotheksautomation, Referenzservice online, Metadaten für Informationssysteme und für Organisationen, Wissenschaftliches Publizieren, Open Access, Knowledge Management und intellektuelles Kapital, Benutzerpsychologie, Online lernen, Berufsbild Informationsspezialist.     Abstract
    Selten wurde ein Dienst so stark diskutiert wie 'RealNames', da sowohl seine Suchwörter als auch die darauf aufsetzenden Links auf Homepages verkauft werden. Machen wir uns doch nichts vor: Das WWW ist ein kommerzielles Unternehmen, die Dienstleistungen müssen finanziert werden. Und warum soll nicht ein Privatunternehmen mit Inhaltserschließung Gewinne erzielen? RealNames mit seinem 'Internet Keyword System' ist eine interessante Idee, das Retrieval nach Homepages zielgenau durchzuführen. Was bringt RealNames den Nutzern? Wann sollte jemand, der Sites im WWW unterhält, Suchwörter und Links bei RealNames abonnieren (und was kostet das)? Im Oktober 1999 haben wir RealNames genauer angeschaut. Analysiert wurde das gezielte Retrieval nach Homepages bei AltaVista, Fireball und bei RealNames.com

Vielmehr untersucht der Autor das Rechercheverhalten so genannter Internetexperten, wobei ein »Experte« hier durch seine (mehrjährige) Erfahrung mit dem Internet definiert wird. Eine formale Ausbildung spielt keine Rolle: »Bezüglich ihrer Web-Kenntnisse sind die Teilnehmer [der Untersuchungen] als Autodidakten zu beschreiben, die sich ihr Wissen über die Jahre eigenständig, zum Teil als Hobby, insbesondere aber im Rahmen eines training-onthe job selbst angeeignet haben« (Seite 102). - Zwei Vergleichsstudien - Nach einführenden Kapiteln über die Expertiseforschung in der Psychologie, ihrer Anwendung auf Fragen des Information Retrieval und Betrachtungen über das Konzept des Hypertexts sowie einem Uberblick über Nutzerstudien im Bereich der Websuche kommt der Autor zum Kernpunkt seines Werks. Er besteht aus zwei Untersuchungen, die der Verfasser im Rahmen seines Dissertationsprojekts, dessen Ergebnisse das vorliegende Buch darstellt, durchgeführt hat. Für die erste Studie machte der Autor Interviews mit den Versuchspersonen, um ihre grundsätzlichen Recherchestra tegien kennen zu lernen und anhand der Ergebnisse ein Ablaufdiagramm typischer Internetrecherchen zu erstellen. In einem zweiten Schritt mussten die Versuchspersonen einige Suchaufgaben lösen. Dabei wurde beobachtet, inwieweit sich das Suchverhalten der Experten von demjenigen des durchschnittlichen Nutzers unterscheidet. Der Vergleich erfolgte auf Basis eines Rechercheprotokolls (Query Log) der Suchmaschine Fireball. Ergebnis war unter anderem, dass die Experten häufiger Operatoren und die Möglichkeit der Phrasensuche nutzten und dass ihre Anfragen aus durchschnittlich mehr Suchbegriffen bestanden. In der zweiten Studie wurde eine Expertengruppe direkt mit Internetanfängern verglichen. Die Aufgabenstellungen kamen aus dem Bereich der Volkswirtschaft (Euro-Umstellung). Die Versuchsteilnehmer wurden in vier Gruppen aufgeteilt: jeweils Anfänger und Experten mit beziehungsweise ohne volkswirtschaftliche Vorkenntnisse. Das Ergebnis war, dass die Gruppe der »Doppelexperten« deutlich bessere Resultate erzielte als Teilnehmer der anderen Gruppen. Erfahrungen nur im volkswirtschaftlichen Bereich oder aber in Bezug auf die Internetrecherche reichten nicht aus, um die Aufgaben besser zu lösen als die so genannten Doppellaien. Allerdings stellt der Autor selbst fest, dass der Schwierigkeitsgrad der gestellten Aufgaben für die Versuchspersonen zu hoch war. Besonders gravierend war dies bei der letzten Aufgabe. Diese konnten von den 47 Teilnehmern nur zwei erfolgreich bearbeiten; interessanterweise ein Doppelexperte und ein Doppellaie. Unter anderem diese Feststellung stellt die Kriterien für einen »Web-Experten« infrage. Interessant wäre es gewesen, wenn anstatt der Abgrenzung durch das Kriterium Web-Erfahrung »wirkliche« Experten wie Bibliothekare und Informationsvermittler die untersuchte Expertengruppe gebildet hätten. Zwar hätten sich bei dem aufgezeichneten exemplarischen Ablauf einer Recherche wohl keine gravierenden Unterschiede ergeben, wahrscheinlich aber bei der Lösung der Suchaufgaben. Die im Anhang abgedruckten Aufgaben erscheinen auch für den nicht volkswirtschaftlich gebildeten Profi als nicht übermäßig schwierig. Die Aussage, dass nur Doppelexperten Suchaufgaben besser lösen können als Anfänger in beiden Bereichen, ist also durchaus fragwürdig. Der Autor kommt zu dem Schluss, dass »inhaltliches Wissen - zumindest für sehr spezifische, inhaltlich anspruchsvolle Aufgaben - als Hilfsmittel der Recherche nur schwer zu kompensieren [ist] « (Seite 185). Dem ist bei hoch spezialisierten Fragestellungen sicherlich zuzustimmen; dabei sollte allerdings eine klare Grenze gesetzt werden, was denn nun sehr spezifische Aufgaben sind.
