- Abstract
- Mit der Verwendung des Attributkonzepts von freeWAIS-sf ist eine Befragung mehrerer WAIS-Datenbanken nur dann möglich wenn die einzelnen Datenbanken jeweils die gleiche Anfrageattribute anbieten. Basierend auf dem Konzept der Datenunabhängigkeit wird eine externe Sicht auf mehrere freeWAIS-sf Datenbanken präsentiert, die es zuläßt, auch Datenbanken mit unterschiedlichen Anfrageattributen parallel zu befragen; die Heterogenität der zu befragenden Datenbanken wird vor dem Benutzer verborgen. SFgate ist eine Gateway zwischen dem WWW und freeWAIS-sf, welches den hier vorgestellten Ansatz implementiert

- Abstract
- Der 'Ort ohne Raum' ist eine Galerie im WWW, die versucht, die Nutzungsstruktur des WWW mit meist (hyper-)textueller Information zu interaktiven Anwendungen zu erweitern, in die der Anwender selbst eingreifen kann. Das Ziel ist nicht eine einfach Reproduktion des Konzeptes einer Galerie in einem anderen Medium, sondern die Spezifik des Mediums soll den Betrachter zu grundsätzlich anderen und erweiterten Interaktions-, Manipulations- und Navigationsmöglichkeiten führen. Der 'Ort ohne Raum' entsteht seit 1995 als Kooperationsprojekt zwischen den Fachbereichen Medienkunst der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig und der Abteilung für Automatische Sprachverarbeitung am Institut für Informatik der Universität Leipzig

- Abstract
- In diesem Beitrag geht es um die Übertragung komplexer Hypertextmodelle, die dynamisches Verhalten von Dokumenten ermöglichen, in das WWW. Ein Ansatz, um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, wird anhand des Hypertextmodells des Konstanzer Hypertextsystems (KHS) entwickelt und beispielhaft erläutert. Zunächst wird eine Einführung in die Problemstellung gegeben. Es folgt eine kurze Darstellung des Modells des KHS. - The Nordic WAIS/WWW project sponsored by NORDINFO is a joint project between Lund University Library and the National Technological Library of Denmark. It aims to improve the existing networked information discovery and retrieval tools Wide Area Information System (WAIS) and World Wide Web (WWW), and to move towards unifying WWW and WAIS. - Abstract
- Considers the challenge to professional indexers posed by the Internet. Indexing and searching on the Internet appears to have a retrograde step, as well developed and efficient information retrieval techniques have been replaced by cruder techniques, involving automatic keyword indexing and frequency ranking, leading to large retrieval sets and low precision. This is made worse by the apparent acceptance of this poor perfromance by Internet users and the feeling, on the part of indexers, that they are being bypassed by the producers of these hyperlinked menus and search engines. Key issues are: how far 'human' indexing will still be required in the Internet environment; how indexing techniques will have to change to stay relevant; and the future role of indexers. The challenge facing indexers is to adapt their skills to suit the online environment and to convince publishers of the need for efficient indexes on the Internet

- Die intellektuelle Erschließung des Internet befindet sich in einer Krise. Yahoo und andere Dienste können mit dem Wachstum des Web nicht mithalten. GERHARD ist derzeit weltweit der einzige Such- und Navigationsdienst, der die mit einem Roboter gesammelten Internetressourcen mit computerlinguistischen und statistischen Verfahren auch automatisch vollständig klassifiziert. Weit über eine Million HTML-Dokumente von wissenschaftlich relevanten Servern in Deutschland können wie bei anderen Suchmaschinen in der Datenbank gesucht, aber auch über die Navigation in der dreisprachigen Universalen Dezimalklassifikation (ETH-Bibliothek Zürich) recherchiert werden
