    "Wer im Jahr 2003 in seinen Lieblingsthemen detailliert informiert sein möchte, klappert täglich Dutzende von News-Sites und Webmagazinen ab. Ein Unterfangen, das mitunter recht mühselig sein kann: Neben, über und unter den gewünschten Nachrichten quälen sich bei jedem Aufruf Menüleisten, Banner und Grafiken durch die Leitung, und oft genug wurde die Seite seit seinem vergangenen Besuch nicht einmal aktualisiert. RSS-Clients, auch Feedreader genannt, könnten künftig Surfern die zeitaufwendige Handarbeit abnehmen. Das Prinzip ist denkbar einfach: Die Betreiber von Webangeboten stellen - neben den HTML-Seiten, die übliche Browser benötigen - einen so genannten Newsfeed zur Verfügung. Genau genommen handelt es sich dabei um nichts Weiteres. als eine speziell kodierte Textdatei mit berschriften, Zusammenfassungen und Textausschnitten der jeweils jüngsten Meldungen. Der Feedreader dreht in regelmäßigen Abständen seine Runden, holt diese Dateien und - wieder daheim - präsentiert die enthaltenen Informationen übersichtlich lesbar. Erst ein Klick auf eine Überschrift lädt den entsprechenden Originalartikel schließlich in den Webbrowser. Statt sich der Reizüberflutung auf Dutzenden, unterschiedlich gestylten Websites auszusetzen, genügt so ein Blick auf die systematisch geordneten Texteinträge im Fenster des Feedreaders, um zu entscheiden, welche Beiträge einer genaueren Betrachtung würdig sind und welche nicht. Diese Sammel-und-Zeige-Programme gibt es mittlerweile in vielen Geschmacksrichtungen und für nahezu jedes Betriebssystem (siehe "Feedreade"). Der Haken: Die Betreiber der Webangebote müssen den Dienst unterstützen und die nötigen RSS-Dateien zur Verfügung stellen. Da sich die meisten News-Magazine allerdings mit Bannerwerbung finanzieren, standen ihre Herausgeber dieser Verbreitung ihrer Texte bisher skeptisch gegenüber. Doch langsam denken viele um: Immerhin kann das System Besucher anlocken. Und nicht irgendwelche. Die Leser sind ausgesprochen interessiert und motiviert, da sie sich explizit für ein bestimmtes Angebot entschieden haben - und nicht zufällig oder unter Zeitdruck durch die einzelnen Seiten stolpern. Spätestens seit mit Yahoo einer der großen Anbieter seine aktuellen Meldungen als Newsfeed verbreitet, darf man davon ausgehen, dass etliche Mitbewerber folgen werden. So könnte die praktische Technologie in absehbarer Zeit zum nützlichen Alltagswerkzeug werden. Bis das soweit ist, übernehmen spezialisierte Dienste den Job des Mittlers zwischen den Welten: Unter NewsIsFree.com kann sich jeder User seine individuelle Auswahl an RSSFeeds zusammenstellen. Sollte das betreffende Internet-Angebot die Technik noch nicht unterstützen, wird einfach kurzerhand der notwendige Feed extern generiert - ob es dem Betreiber nun passt oder nicht. Der Service ist in der Basis-Version kostenlos. RSS steht für "Rich Site Summary". Doch zuletzt werden die drei Buchstaben häufiger als Akronym für "Really Simple Syndication" eingesetzt. Die Idee geht zurück auf das Jahr 1999, als das mittlerweile beinahe verblichene Unternehmen Netscape mit Hilfe dieses Verfahrens die Popularität seines Portals MyNetscape.com erhöhen wollte. Der Durchbruch kam mit der Verbreitung der Weblogs. Angeregt durch die Integration des RSS-Standards in das beliebte Blog-Tool Radio Userland, übernahmen die Hersteller anderer Publishing-Systeme schnell diese Strategie, und heute kommt kaum noch ein Online-Journal ohne eigenen Newsfeed aus - erkennbar am kleinen XML-Button auf der Startseite.

    Abstract
    Basic skills of classification and subject indexing have been little taught in British library schools since automation was introduced into libraries. However, development of the Internet as a major medium of publication has stretched the capability of search engines to cope with retrieval. Consequently, there has been interest in applying existing systems of knowledge organization to electronic resources. Unfortunately, the classification systems have been adopted without a full understanding of modern classification principles. Analytico-synthetic schemes have been used crudely, as in the case of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). The fully faceted Bliss Bibliographical Classification, 2nd edition (BC2) with its potential as a tool for electronic resource retrieval is virtually unknown outside academic libraries

    Abstract
    The author examines patterns of productivity in the Internet mailing lists, also known as discussion lists or discussion groups. Datasets have been collected from electronic archives of two Internet mailing lists, the LINGUIST and the History of the English Language. Theoretical models widely used in informetric research have been applied to fit the distribution of posted messages over the population of authors. The Generalized Inverse Poisson-Gaussian and Poisson-lognormal distributions show excellent results in both datasets, while Lotka and Yule-Simon distribution demonstrate poor-to-mediocre fits. In the mailing list where moderation and quality control are enforced to a higher degree, i.e., the LINGUIST, Lotka, and Yule-Simon distributions perform better. The findings can be plausibly explained by the lesser applicability of the success-breedssuccess model to the information production in the electronic communication media, such as Internet mailing lists, where selectivity of publications is marginal or nonexistent. The hypothesis is preliminary, and needs to be validated against the larger variety of datasets. Characteristics of the quality control, competitiveness, and the reward structure in Internet mailing lists as compared to professional scholarly journals are discussed.

    Abstract
    In this paper we report research results investigating microblogging as a form of electronic word-of-mouth for sharing consumer opinions concerning brands. We analyzed more than 150,000 microblog postings containing branding comments, sentiments, and opinions. We investigated the overall structure of these microblog postings, the types of expressions, and the movement in positive or negative sentiment. We compared automated methods of classifying sentiment in these microblogs with manual coding. Using a case study approach, we analyzed the range, frequency, timing, and content of tweets in a corporate account. Our research findings show that 19% of microblogs contain mention of a brand. Of the branding microblogs, nearly 20% contained some expression of brand sentiments. Of these, more than 50% were positive and 33% were critical of the company or product. Our comparison of automated and manual coding showed no significant differences between the two approaches. In analyzing microblogs for structure and composition, the linguistic structure of tweets approximate the linguistic patterns of natural language expressions. We find that microblogging is an online tool for customer word of mouth communications and discuss the implications for corporations using microblogging as part of their overall marketing strategy.

    Abstract
    Internet resources have brought great excitement but also grave concerns to the library world, especially to the cataloging community. In spite of the various problematic aspects presented by Internet resources (poorly organized, lack of stability, variable quality), catalogers have decided that they are worth cataloging, in particular those meeting library selection criteria. This paper tries to trace the decade-long history of the library comrnunity's efforts in providing an effective way to catalog Internet resources. Basically, its olbjective is to answer the following questions: Why catalog? What to catalog? and, How to catalog. Some issues of cataloging electronic journals and developments of the Dublin Core Metadata system are also discussed.

    Abstract
    The Digital Library Federation is a consortium of research libraries and related organizations in the United States that are pioneering in the use of electronic-information technologies. Each of the DLF's members, mostly research libraries, contributes to a capital fund and an annual budget to support the organization, which is administered by a directorate within the U.S. Council an Library and Information Resources. A Steering Committee, on which each member Institution is represented, guides the work, which has focused an coordinating research, identifying standards and »best practices« for digital library development, and helping to start projects that libraries need but cannot easily develop individually.The DLF convenes task forces, issues publications, sponsors a biannual Digital Library Forum, and maintains a Web site.

    Abstract
    SFX is an XML-based product designed to inter-link electronic resources with other resources in context-sensitive manner. SFX was first developed at the University of Ghent by Herbert Van de Sompel and has been released as a commercial product by Ex Libris. Use statistics garnered from SFX's statistics module since the implementation in July of 2001 are discussed in the context of an academic research library environment. The results from usability testing conducted at Washington State University are reported. These usage statistics demonstrated a pattern of increasing use and exceptional use from FirstSearch databases.

    Abstract
    The proliferation of information in electronic format does not guarantee its accessibility. The fact that many Web sites are not accessible to large segments of the disabled community has created a "digital divide". The accessibility barriers are systemic. In recent years, there has been a growing body of significant laws and standards concerning Web accessibility that impact people with disabilities. Ways of breaking down these barriers to a fuller accessibility implementation do exist, including education to raise awareness of Web accessibility, nationwide policy and guidelines for accessibility, and Web-based applications and tools to facilitate Web accessibility, to name a few.

    Abstract
    Electronic news has long held the promise of personalized and dynamic delivery of current event new items, particularly for Web users. Although wlwctronic versions of print news are now widely available, the personalization of that delivery has not yet been accomplished. In this paper, we present a methodology of associating news documents based on the extraction of feature phrases, where feature phrases identify dates, locations, people and organizations. A news representation is created from these feature phrases to define news objects that can then be compared and ranked to find related news items. Unlike tradtional information retrieval, we are much more interested in precision than recall. That is, the user would like to see one or more specifically related articles, rather than all somewhat related articles.     Abstract
    Because of the nature, number, and extreme mobility of resources available on electronic networks, access instruments that will allow information seekers to find relevant Web pages or sites are essential. While virtual libraries without clear collection development policies continue to be established, ad hoc knowledge organization schemes also continue to be conceived and implemented; these so-called innovative classification tools are generally structured around loose categories representing a mix of disciplines, subjects, forms of presentation, and audiences. This paper discusses a few examples of Web-based organization schemes, suggesting that their degree of intuitiveness, user-friendliness and efficiency is very possibly overrated

    Abstract
    The Iter Project ("iter" means "path" or "journey" in Latin) is an internationally supported non-profit research project created with the objective of providing electronic access to all kinds and formats of materials that relate to the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700) and that were published between 1700 and the present. Knowledge representation and organization decisions for the Project were influenced by its potential international clientele of scholarly users, and these decisions illustrate the importance and efficacy of collaboration between specialized users and information professionals. The paper outlines the scholarly principles and information goals of the Project and describes in detail the methodology developed to provide reliable and consistent knowledge representation and organization for one component of the Project, the Iter Bibliography. Examples of fully catalogued records for the Iter Bibliography are included.

    Abstract
    In this article, we examine the conceptual models that help us understand the development and sustainability of scholarly and professional communication forums an the Internet, such as conferences, pre-print servers, field-wide data sets, and collaboratories. We first present and document the information processing model that is implicitly advanced in most discussions about scholarly communications-the "Standard Model." Then we present an alternative model, one that considers information technologies as Socio-Technical Interaction Networks (STINs). STIN models provide a richer understanding of human behavior with online scholarly communications forums. They also help to further a more complete understanding of the conditions and activities that support the sustainability of these forums within a field than does the Standard Model. We illustrate the significance of STIN models with examples of scholarly communication forums drawn from the fields of high-energy physics, molecular biology, and information systems. The article also includes a method for modeling electronic forums as STINs.

    Abstract
    Reports a preliminary analysis of organizational schemes applied by academic libraries worldwide to arrange their electronic resources an their Web-based information gateways. The unsystematic sample consists of 41 academic libraries in 10 countries representing 4 languages, Chinese, English, German, and Spanish. The study reveals a widely accepted practice in applying 6 simplistic methods to organizing online information: by resource type, alphabetical by title, alphabetical by subject (mostly discipline and genre), by vendor/publisher, by broad classification, and random. In addition, it notes a marked difference between libraries in the English-speaking world and those in other countries in that the former present significantly more systematic characteristics.
