Orientierungshilfen und Wegweiser gibt es also viele, sowohl online als auch über traditionellere Medien wie dem Buch. Auch das vorliegende Werk von Anna-Katharina Weilenmann ordnet sich in diese Kategorie von Internet-Führern ein. Auf rund 200 Seiten werden Einstiege in verschiedenste Themen der Wissenschaft angeboten. Über so genannte Subject Gateways - nennen wir sie schlicht Themen-Portale - werden Wissenschaftsdisziplinen erschlossen, meist in einer kurzen, aber präzisen Beschreibung der online-Ressource. Jedes Sachgebiet wird zudem um Lexika, Enzyklopädien, Bibliographien und Datenbanken ergänzt. Die Ordnung der Sachgebiete orientiert sich an der Dewey Dezimalklassifikation. Die Bandbreite der Sachgebiete ist dementsprechend groß und orientiert sich an der Wissenschaft: - Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft - Philosophie und Psychologie, Religion / Theologie - Sozialwissenschaften, Soziologie, Politik - Wirtschaft, Recht - Erziehung, Ethnologie, Sprache, Literaturwissenschaft - Mathematik, Physik, Chemie, Biologie - Technik - Medizin - Landwirtschaft, Informatik - Kunst, Architektur, Musik, Theater, Film - Sport - Geschichte Geographie, Reisen Bei der Auswahl der einzelnen Web-Quellen ließ sich die Autorin von Qualitätskriterien wie Alter der Webseite, der Zuverlässigkeit der Inhalte, der Aktualität aber auch von der Art der Trägerschaft leiten. Webseiten mit einem akademischen Hintergrund standen daher im Vordergrund, waren aber nicht ausschließlich vertreten. So finden sich auch Webseiten kommerzieller Anbieter (z.B. Scopus von Elsevier) oder auch anderer öffentlicher, nicht-akademischer Institutionen (wie der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek mit Ariadne) im Webseiten-Verzeichnis. Rund 200 deutsch- und englischsprachige Einträge werden im Buch genauer beschrieben, mit Informationen zum Inhalt des Angebots, der Urheberschaft und Angabe möglicher Kosten. Auch weiterführende Links werden häufig angeführt. Ein einführendes Kapitel zur Informationsrecherche rundet dieses gelungene Buch ab.
Empfehlung: Das Buch eignet sich meiner Meinung nach gut als Ausgangspunkt für die Recherche in einem noch unbekannten Sachgebiet. Zum einen, weil ein Sachgebiet von recht wenigen, dafür von der Autorin gut ausgesuchten Web-Quellen eingerahmt wird. Zum anderen, weil hier von vertrauenswürdigen Webseiten ausgegangen werden kann. Man kann es auch anders sagen: dieses Buch gehört möglichst nahe an jede InternetArbeitsstation. Aufgrund der Dynamik des Themas - Links und Webseiten können recht rasch "altern" - hat dieses Buch natürlich eine fast schon natürliche Lebensdauer. Hier wäre es interessant, und das ist weniger ein Hinweis an die Autorin als vielmehr ein Wink an den Verlag, die so detailreich beschriebenen Quellen auch online zugänglich zu machen, nämlich in der Form von Bookmarks, die von den Leserlnnen auf eigene Bookmarking-Tools übernommen werden könnten. Entweder ganz einfach als Favoriten im eigenen Browser oder zu elaborierten Werkzeugen wie Rollyo, wo individuelle Suchdienste basierend auf selbst erstellten Searchrolls bedient werden könnten. - Bibliotheken weltweit befinden sich im Wandel. Der Trend der Nutzer, Informationen immer häufiger zuerst, und teilweise sogar ausschließlich, im Internet zu suchen, erfordert Veränderungen in der Konzeption des bibliothekarischen Informationsdienstes. Um den Nutzer dann und dort zu erreichen, wo er Hilfe benötigt, bieten viele Bibliotheken bereits Digital Reference Service, digitalen Auskunftsdienst, an. Zumeist erfolgt dieser allerdings institutionsbezogen von einzelnen Bibliotheken, die dadurch auf synergetische Effekte und Vorteile durch Zusammenarbeit verzichten. Abhilfe könnten Informationsverbünde schaffen, in denen mehrere Bibliotheken arbeitsteilig digitalen Auskunftsdienst anbieten. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Entwicklung solcher Digital Reference Konsortien in den USA näher zu beleuchten. Um den Einstieg in die Thematik zu erleichtern, werden in einem theoretischen Teil zuerst die Begrifflichkeiten geklärt und die verschiedenen Formen des Digital Reference Service dargestellt. Im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit wird dann die praktische Anwendung des digitalen Informationsdienstes diskutiert. Zu diesem Zweck wurden repräsentativ zwei innovative US-amerikanische Projekte ausgewählt, die detailliert vorgestellt werden. Ein kurzer Überblick über die historische Entwicklung digitaler Informationsverbünde in den USA soll dabei als Hintergrund für die Einordnung der präsentierten Dienste dienen. Die Erfahrungen, die in diesen sehr unterschiedlichen Projekten gemacht worden sind, dienen anschließend als Basis für Überlegungen, wie derartige Konsortien in Deutschland aufgebaut werden könnten. Organisatorische und strukturelle Anregungen an das deutsche Bibliothekswesen zum Aufbau von kooperativen digitalen Auskunftsdiensten runden die vorliegende Arbeit ab.

- Abstract
- Der folgende Aufsatz beschreibt aus technischer Sicht den Weg von der Konzeption und Vision einer modernen suchmaschinenbasierten Suchumgebung zu ihrer technologischen Umsetzung. Er nimmt den Faden, der im ersten Teil (ZfBB 51 (2004), 5/6) beschrieben wurde, unter technischen Gesichtspunkten wieder auf. Dabei werden neben den konzeptionellen Ausgangsüberlegungen schwerpunktmäßig die technologischen Aspekte beleuchtet.

- Abstract
- Mit der Deutschen Internetbibliothek soll einer breiten Öffentlichkeit ein allgemeines Themenportal im Netz zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Ähnlich wie das jüngst eröffnete Portal Vascoda als Dienstleistung der wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen wird auch die Deutsche Internetbibliothek in Kooperation erstellt und gepflegt: Rund siebzig deutsche und österreichische Öffentliche Bibliotheken suchen nach relevanten Internetquellen, bewerten und rubrizieren einschlägige Angebote im Web - ein erstes Resümee nach fast einjährigem Betrieb des »Wissensportals der Bibliotheken«.

- Abstract
- "Die mit dem Internet und WWW verbundenen Möglichkeiten zur Informationsvermittlung wurden in jüngster Zeit von Bibliotheken erkannt. Dies führte dazu, daß viele Bibliotheken bereits zumindest einen OPAC über das Internet anbieten. Zukünftige Aktivitäten werden aber dahin gehen, daß auch digitale Dokumente oder Internetressourcen, d.h. Informationen über Dokumente im Intennet, die nicht zum Bibliotheksbestand gehören, von Bibliotheken angeboten werden. Da diese Entwicklungen die definierenden Eigenschaften einer Bibliothek verändern, hat sich zur Abgrenzung von 'klassischen' Bibliotheken der Begriff 'virtuelle' oder 'digitale' Bibliothek etabliert. Neben der Informationsvermittlung dienen klassische Bibliotheken jedoch auch als Kommunikationszentren, in denen man Studien- und Fachkollegen zum gemeinsamen Arbeiten trifft. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird es für die Akzeptanz vitueller Bibliotheken von großer Bedeutung sein, daß auch sie geeignete Kommunikationsdienste für ihre unterschiedlichen Nutzertypen anbieten

- Abstract
- Werden Google, Yahoo und Microsoft die einzigen Zugänge zum weltweiten Wissen im Jahre 2010 darstellen? Der Autor setzt sich für eine konzertierte Aktion der Bibliotheken ein, um mittels »State-of-the-Art«- Suchmaschinentechnologie verlässliche, qualitativ hochwertige Suchdienste für wissenschaftliche Informationen in Forschung und Lehre aufzubauen. Die Notwendigkeit ergibt sich aus dem explosionsartigen Anwachsen wissenschaftlich relevanter Dokumente, die nicht selten ausschließlich über das Internet zugänglich sind und über derzeit verfügbare Informationsportale von Bibliotheken nicht oder nur sehr unzulänglich recherchiert werden können. Der Artikel beschreibt mögliche Wege der Kooperationen von Bibliotheken und anderen Informationsanbietern im nationalen und internationalen Kontext beim Aufbau eines offenen, verteilten wissenschaftlichen Internet-Indexes, der modular angelegt in beliebigen lokalen Umgebungen genutzt werden kann. Für die nutzerfreundliche Gestaltung des neuen Suchservices wird auf die Notwendigkeit der Berücksichtigung von etablierten, allgemeinen Internet-Suchdiensten eingegangen, die innerhalb kurzer Zeit eine hohe Popularität und Nutzerakzeptanz gewonnen haben.

- Abstract
- Ob wir spazieren gehen, einkaufen oder uns unterhalten - ständig teilen wir die Lebewesen und Dinge, die uns umgeben, ein in verschiedene Kategorien: Bäume und Blumen, Milchprodukte und Gemüse, sympathische Menschen und unsympathische. So schaffen wir Ordnung und finden uns in der Welt zurecht wie in einer Bibliothek - alles hat seinen Platz. Diese Ordnung kommt ins Wanken, sagt David Weinberger. Unser Denken in festen Kategorien führt uns auf Dauer nicht weiter, wir müssen lernen, mit Chaos, Unordnung und Unschärfe umzugehen.
