    In the 1990s, North American archivists and records managers shifted some of their concern with electronic records and record keeping systems to conducting research about the nature of these records and systems. Describes a research project at Pittsburgh University School of Information Sciences, which considered how electronic records might be managed by the development of recorddkeeping functional requirements. The work was supported with funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Focuses on the project's 4 main products: the functional requirements; metadata specifications for recordkeeping; and the warrant reflecting professional and societal endorsement of the requirements

    Current hypertext systems have been widely and effectively used on relatively small data volumes. Explores the potential of database technology for aiding the implementation of hypertext systems holding very large amounts of complex data. Databases meet many requirements of the hypermedium: persistent data management, large volumes, data modelling, multi-level architecture with abstractions and views, metadata integrated with operational data, short-term transaction processing and high-level end-user languages for searching and updating data. Describes a system implementing the storage, retrieval and recall of trails through hypertext comprising textual complex objects (to illustrate the potential for the use of data bases).     Abstract
    In order to test the power of metadata on information retrieval, an experiment was designed and conducted on a group of 7 graduate students using the Dublin Core as the cataloguing metadata. Results show that, on average, the retrieval error rate is only 2.9 per cent for the MES system (http://140.136.85.194), which utilizes the Dublin Core to describe the documents on the World Wide Web, in contrast to 20.7 per cent for the 7 famous search engines including HOTBOT, GAIS, LYCOS, EXCITE, INFOSEEK, YAHOO, and OCTOPUS. The very low error rate indicates that the users can use the information of the Dublin Core to decide whether to retrieve the documents or not

    Abstract
    Consistency and interoperability are objectives when creating standards for spatial metadata. Besides FGDC-metadata standards some other international standards are in use or will be in use soon. The use of these standards forms the basis for geospatial data infrastructures (GDI) and clearinghouses. Though most GDIs and clearinghouses are in the planning stage, the contours of regional and a global geospatial data infrastructure (GGDI) are slowly emerging. Maps should be part of the interfaces, which provide access to the GDIs and clearinghouses.

    Abstract
    The Resource Description Framework (RDF) is an infrastructure that enables the encoding, exchange and reuse of structured metadata. RDF is an application of XML that imposes needed structural constraints to provide unambiguous methods of expressing semantics. RDF additionally provides a means for publishing both human-readable and machine-processable vocabularies designed to encourage the reuse and extension of metadata semantics among disparate information communities. The structural constraints RDF imposes to support the consistent encoding and exchange of standardized metadata provides for the interchangeability of separate packages of metadata defined by different resource description communities.
