- Abstract
- A model for analysing multimedia information is proposed from the point of view of the theory of communication. After a brief presentation of the complex map of the sciences that deal with multimedia communication in its different aspects, the current multimedia revolution is historically contextualized as a tendency towards messages that are able to build near-reality experiences (virtual reality). After setting the theoretical point of view, an analysis of multimedia messages is substantiated and a model is presented. The first part of the model deals with the different communications channels and tools: still images, movies, sounds, texts, text with illustrations, audiovisuals and interactive multimedia, with an emphasis in nontextual documents. The second part addresses the global properties of the multimedia message, which are of a textual and metatextual nature. The overlapping of media, channels, genres and messages-and the conscious and technical use of such interactions-is precisely one of the main and outstanding characteristics of the multimedia discourse, and requires specific moves in indexing languages development. The multimedia environment has also a great potential to promote a wider theory of knowledge organization, bringing closer distant fields like scientific and fictional indexing or verbal and image indexing. It is stated that such a unified theory requires a closer attention to the pragmatic aspects of indexing and the inclusion of new semantic layers. A simple indexing model is proposed to illustrate who to address these challenges.

Das multimediale Lernprogramm wurde an einer Stichprobe von 121 Medizinstudenten hinsichtlich gestalterischer Merkmale, motivationalen Effekten, Einstellungen und Maßen des Wissenserwerbes untersucht. Es wurden 121 Medizinstudenten randomisiert (medianes Alter 24; Spannweite: R=21-33) in 2 Gruppen aufgeteilt. Diese haben sich über 90 Minuten entweder mit dem Lernprogramm (CBT: n=71) oder in einem Seminar (Kurs: n=50) auf den Lernstoff vorbereitet. Eine Woche nach der Lernphase wurde mittels MC-Fragen ein Wissenstest durchgeführt. Nach einem zusätzlichen Bed-Side-Teaching für beide Gruppen wurden die Studenten durch den Dozenten geprüft. Hierbei wurde der klinische Umgang, der Problemzugang und die chirurgische Entscheidungsfindung evaluiert. Bezüglich des Wissenstestes zeigte sich zwischen beiden Gruppen ein statistisch signifikanter Unterschied zugunsten der CBT-Bedingung (P < 0.001) (CBT: Median=5; R=2.67 - 9.2 Punkte von 10 vs. Kurs: Median=3.16; R=1.0-7.0 Punkte). Beim Vergleich der beiden Gruppen hinsichtlich der evaluierten Faktoren wie klinischem Umgang, Angehen von Problemen und chirurgischer Entscheidungsfindung zeigte die CBT-Gruppe ein im Durchschnitt um 25% besseres Ergebnis gegenüber der Kontrollgruppe. Aufgrund der durchgeführten Untersuchung kann festgestellt werden, daß Lehr-Lernmodule in der Chirurgie zur signifikanten Steigerung der Vermittlung medizinischen Wissens und zur verbesserten Ausbildung des deduktiven Denkens führen.

- Abstract
- EC project PRESTO has completed a survey of the holdings and preservation status of ten major broadcast archives. These archives represent a significant portion of total European broadcast archives, including some ofthe largest individual collections.The main findings are that approximately 75% of this material is at risk or inaccessible and that the collections are growing at roughly four times the rate of current progress in preservation work. This article gives detailed results of the survey, and describes the technical developments being produced by project PRESTO to reduce the costs and improve the effectiveness of multimedia archive preservation projects.

- Abstract
- Integrated multimedia systems process text, graphics, and other discrete media as well as digital audio, and video data. Considerable amounts of graphics, audio and video data in their uncompressed form, especially moving pictures, require storage and digital network capabilities that will not be available in the near future. Nevertheless, local, as well as networked, multimedia applications and systems have become realities. In order to cope with these storage and communication requirements in such integrated multimedia systems, compression technology is essential. This paper starts with a brief motivation of the need for compression and subsequently states the essential requirements for these techniques in the scope of multimedia systems and applications. As most of these techniques apply the same principles, namely, the source, entropy, and hybrid coding fundamentals, these are explained in detail. Based on a general framework of the steps encountered in a compression system - data preparation, processing, quantization, and entropy coding - this paper outlines details about the techniques developed by CCITT (H.261, i.e. px64), in the ISO/IEC (JPEG, MPEG) stadardization bodies and the proprietary DVI system

- Abstract
- Provides a quick overview of the historical development of hypertext/hypermedia, and the role of hypermedia in today's dynamic information environment. Actual R&D examples in both PROJECT EMPEROR-1, specifically its hypermedia R&D component experimented on all major delivery system platforms, is discussed and demonstrated, and new opportunities for libraries in the 1990s are further elaborated.
