- Abstract
- To an overwhelming extent, storage and retrieval systems were designed for information intermediaries who were specialists in formal, controlled documentation languages (e.g. classification systems, indexing languages) and who were then trained to utilize the query language of each retrieval system. However, with the advent of the microcomputer, there now exists, in the information retrieval industry, an obvious will to tackle both the professional and the personal information markets, as evidences by their more sophisticated yet more user-friendly systems and by the design and marketing of all sorts of interface software (front-end, gateway, intermediary). In order to make full advantage of these systems, the user must be able to master three different languages: the natural language of the discipline, the indexing language, and the system's query language. The author defines and characterizes each of these languages and identifies their issues and trends in the IR cycle and specifically in public online search services. Finally he proposes a theoretical model for the analysis of IR languages and suggests a few research avenues

- Abstract
- LIAS, the Pennsylvania State University's (Penn State) integrated interactive online system, provides for messaging by the user to inform library staff of errors found in bibliographic records. The message is sent by use of the OOPS command, and results in a printout which is used by processing staff for online catalog maintenance. This article describes LIAS, the use of the OOPS command, the processing of the resulting OOPS reports, an assessment of the effect of its use, and some speculation on the expansion of the LIAS message system for use in catalog maintenance.

- Arizona State University installed the Tandem-based CARL integrated library system in 1987. This software supports all the traditional functions of an integrated system plus the ability to act as a platform for creating or loading multiple databases. The functionality of CARL software for this purpose is described, a brief rundown of databases loaded at ASU is provided, and the criteria for selecting databases is given. - Abstract
- This article discusses the provision of "help" in interactive information retrieval system (IIRS) and describes a comparative survey of the "help" facilities of 16 such systems. Six guidelines for the design of a "help" facility are drawn up and these are used to evaluate the quality and friendliness of the "help" provided by each system. The scores indicate that "help" on IIRS is often inadequate, especially on the commercial online systems. This article concludes by discussing why "help" is so unfriendly and by suggesting some ways in which online "help" could be improved

- Abstract
- Research in user behavior on online catalogs is in its early stages, but preliminary findings suggest that users encounter many of the same problems identified in behavioral studies of other types of bibliographic retrieval systems. Much can be learned from comparing the results of user behavior studies on these two types of systems. Research on user problems with both the mechanical aspects and the conceptual aspects of system use is reviewed, with the conclusion that more similiratiy exists across types of systems in conceptual than in mechanical problems. Also discussed are potential sources of the problems, due either to individual characteristics or to system variables. A series of research questions is proposed and a number of potential interim solutions ae suggested for alleviating some of the problems encountered by users of information systems

- Abstract
- Menu selection systems reduce training and memorization, simplify entry of choices, and structure the user's task. However, the use of menu selection is no guarantee that novices or experts will be satisfied or able to carry out their work. This article focuses on the multiple design issues in creating successful menu selection systems. These include the primary issue of semantic organization and the host of secondary issues such as response time and display rates, shortcuts for frequent users, titles, phrasing of menu items, graphic layout, and selection mechanisms. Novel approaches such as popup menus and embedded menus are covered. Experimental results and design guidelines are presented

- Abstract
- In January of 1981, the Center for the Study of Youth Development initiated an online catalog of the holdings of its specialized library consisting of 10,000 monographs, journals, vertical file materials, etc. The present article discusses the reactions of the end-user or patron population to the resource. The background of the library automation project-including issues of cost-effectiveness, increased power, and user utility-is discussed in order to establish the initial goals of this activity. Attention is given to how the project was implemented; this includes a comparison of preliminary goals with what ultimately was delivered. The transition from a COM catalog to the online catalog required training of patrons (some of whom had little or no experience with a computer terminal), and only half of the Center staff participated in the initial training sessions. Preliminary patron behavior is reviewed, and an attempt to informally analyze both positive and negative experiences is offered. The initial experiences are summarized in a discussion of the user interface of the query portion of the online catalog software.
