    Abstract
Research on the use of online catalogs has challenged many assumptions about the behavior of library users. It has demonstrated that many of the patterns of behavior observed in the use of card catalogs were adaptions to the card technology; often behavioral patterns are different in an online environment. These studies have indicated that patrons prefer online catalogs and use them more, but they also show inadequacies in bibliographic practice, especially in the area of subject access.

    Abstract
The rapid pace of OPAC implementation in this country is providing a fruitful environment for research, with a wide range of projects currently being undertaken, including a number concerned with the application of advanced information retrieval techniques to OPAC systems. This article reviews the current situation and describes some of the more important research projects being undertaken, particularly those funded by the British Library Research and Development Department. A brief description of the British Library's own OPAC project is also provided. The article concludes with an examination of the value of OPAC research and a look at where further research effort might best be concentrated

    Abstract
This paper suggests that the cataloging community may be setting its goals too low in its approach to online subject access. Truly effective subject retrieval for online catalog users will not be possible until the Library of Congress gives a higher priority to consistency in the assignment of subject headings. In recognition of the intellectual complexity of LCSH, the paper proposes the appointment of subject specialists to monitor the assignment of subject headings at the Library of Congress.

    Abstract
This article reports on a low-cost study of the transaction log of an online public access catalog at an academic library. The three goals of the study were to determine failure rates, to study usage patterns, and to investigate problable causes of patron problems when using the OPAC. The study found that failure rates (defined as those searches that produced zero hits) of approximately 40% are common, and that usage patterns and failure rates do not vary greatly over time or from terminal to terminal, but that the distribution of probable causes of user problems varies significantly from terminal to terminal

    Abstract
Research in user behavior on online catalogs is in its early stages, but preliminary findings suggest that users encounter many of the same problems identified in behavioral studies of other types of bibliographic retrieval systems. Much can be learned from comparing the results of user behavior studies on these two types of systems. Research on user problems with both the mechanical aspects and the conceptual aspects of system use is reviewed, with the conclusion that more similiratiy exists across types of systems in conceptual than in mechanical problems. Also discussed are potential sources of the problems, due either to individual characteristics or to system variables. A series of research questions is proposed and a number of potential interim solutions ae suggested for alleviating some of the problems encountered by users of information systems

    Abstract
Browsing refers to information retrieval where the initial search criteris are generally quite vague. The fundamentals of browsing are explored as a basis for the creation of an intelligent computer system to assist with the retrieval of online information. Browsing actions via a computer terminal are examined, together with new methods of accessing text and satisfying user queries. Initial tests with a prototype system illustrated the use of different retrieval strategies when accessing online information of varying structure. The results suggest the construction of a more intelligent processing component to provide expanded capabiblities for content extrction and navigation within text documents

    Abstract
The proliferation of online public access catalogs (OPACs) requires some systematic rationale for the comparative evaluation of their designs. Considered as an indexing application, the OPAC can be analyzed by three features: the variety of bibliographic data processed, the kinds of indexes constructed, and the ways in which the indexes are searched. No one configuration appiles to every library research project with equal efficacy or likelihood of satisfying queries. However, the rationale proposed can compare and evaluate alternative library computer catalogs in term of the library's understanding of the relationship between the library's collections and their use

    Abstract
This article discusses the provision of "help" in interactive information retrieval system (IIRS) and describes a comparative survey of the "help" facilities of 16 such systems. Six guidelines for the design of a "help" facility are drawn up and these are used to evaluate the quality and friendliness of the "help" provided by each system. The scores indicate that "help" on IIRS is often inadequate, especially on the commercial online systems. This article concludes by discussing why "help" is so unfriendly and by suggesting some ways in which online "help" could be improved

    Abstract
Assigned topical and geographic subject headings from a sample of 3.814 bibliographic records in the University of Michigan Library's catalog were analyzed to determine the degree of match with LCSH, 10th edition and to idetify types of heading conflicts that lend themselves to automatic subject authority control. The findings showed a surprising degree of agreement: 44 percent of headings matched LCSH 10th completely. For headings without subdivisions, the match was 88,4 percent. Since 93,6 percent of the topical subdivisions that did not match LCSH were found on the free-floating lists, some consideration should be given to developing a machine-readable file of free-floating subdivisons for matching purposes.

    Abstract
In Northern Germany, the State of Lower Saxony has developed an online library network, the center of which is the Library Computer Center at the State and University Library in Goettingen. This center offers the following data bases online: the union catalogue of serials in Lower Saxony libraries; the union catalogue of books since 1977 in these libraries; the IBZ and IBR; the last two years of the Deutsche Bibliographie, the British National Bibliography and, within the next few months, the titles offered by the Library of Congress (all in full service); then all new titles in this data base will be compatible to MARC II.
